NEWPORT-The opening match of the 2010 season was tough
for the Cocke County High School tennis squad.
Both the Lady Red and Fighting Cocks dropped their first
matches of the season to District 2-AAA newcomer Seymour at Newport City Park
on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Red lost their match 6-3 with the Lady Eagles,
but saw a couple of close tiebreakers swing the match in the other direction.
Erika Wild and Addie Holt, the Lady Red's top two
players, lost their respective matches in tie breakers. Wild held a 7-3 lead
over Andrea Markowitz, but fell 9-8 in a tiebreaker. Holt meanwhile fell 8-7 in
a tiebreaker against Kelsey Fleming.
Jordan Shelton got the Lady Red's lone singles win, 8-4,
over Alexis Pierce.
The Cocke County girls also scored a pair of doubles
victories in the match. Wild and Holt paired together to obtain an 8-0 win over
Angela Karl and Lauren Troutman. Shelton and Ashland Owenby also teamed up to
win their doubles match 8-0 against the Seymour duo of Chelsie Doster and
Jessica Gaylon.
The Fighting Cocks however suffered through the growing
pains in their first match of the season. Featuring a youthful squad and having
many first-year players, CCHS dropped the boy's match 9-0.
Cocke County returns to the court this
afternoon with their second match of the year at District 2-AAA opponent South
Doyle.
