Two children taken to California without permission
Leslie Leonard, 33, of Newport, said that her two
children, Brittany Rankin, 13, and Christen Rankin, 12, were staying with
Leonard's sister in Johnson City for visitation when an acquaintance allegedly
showed up with a forged document saying he had joint custody of the children,
took them, and left the State of Tennessee and went to California, Sgt. David
Crum reported.
Accident at Pat's Broasted Chicken
Pauline F. Owenby, 79, of Liberty Road, in Cosby, was
traveling north on Wilton Springs Road in a 1998 Buick 2G4, on Thursday, March
11, at about 111 a.m. He apparently stopped at the intersection with Hartford
Road, then attempted to cross Hartford Road to enter the private drive of Pat's
Broasted Chicken. Owenby pulled out into the path of a 1992 Plymouth VOF van
driven by Roy D. Williams, 51, of Carpenter Road, in Parrottsville. Williams
was traveling west on Hartford Road and was unable to stop in time to avoid a
collision, striking the Buick in the passenger side front fender, Deputy
Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Accident on Oak Hills Road
Brianna M. Harradon, 16, of Oak Hills Road, in
Parrottsville, was traveling north on Oak Hills Road in a 1991 Honda, on
Thursday, March 11. Justin R. Sherrill, 22, of Culbertson Road, in Greeneville,
was traveling south on Oak Hills Road in a 1986 Toyota pickup truck and topped
a hillcrest white traveling over in the northbound lane, and the two vehicles
collided head-on, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
POLICE REPORTS
Driving on suspended license, light law violation
John A. Cook, 23, of 220 Norwood Drive, in Lenoir City,
was arrested Thursday, March 11, and charged with driving on a suspended
license and violation of light law, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported. Cook was
allegedly driving a 1993 Ford Ranger south on Cosby Highway with a headlight
out.
Five drug charges, and more
Crystal Huff, 32, of 3315 Bill Douglas Road, in Newport,
was arrested Wednesday, March 10, after she was observed failing to stop for a
stop sign at the intersection of Budda Street and Bailey Street, Patrolman
William Garber reported. Huff was charged with possession of Schedule II,
possession of Schedule IV (three charges), possession of drug paraphernalia,
driving on a revoked license, and traffic control device violation.
Reckless driving, other charges
Kristopher D. Zieger, 23, of 370 Carson Springs Road, in
Newport, was arrested Saturday, March 13, and charged with reckless driving,
expired license, and financial responsibility, Patrolman Robby McMahan
reported.
Disorderly conduct
Lisa Sutton, 31, of 4661 Hooper Highway, in Cosby, was
arrested Friday, March 12, and charged with disorderly conduct, Capt. Ronnie
Landers reported.
Disorderly conduct
Charlie R. Huff, 28, of 653 8th Street, in Newport, was
arrested on Friday, March 12, and charged with disorderly conduct, Patrolman
Robby McMahan reported.
Fraudulent use of a debit card (10 counts)
Beau C. Rongione, 34, of 3539 Pepper Way, in Cosby, was
arrested on Friday, March 12, and charged with fraudulent use of a credit or
debit card under $500 (10 counts), Det. Lynn Shults reported. Police allegedly
saw surveillance video at a Green Bank ATM machine that showed Rongione using
his mother's debit card several times to withdraw $80 (plus $2.50 service
charges) and a final withdrawal of $100 (plus a $2.50 service charge) over a
span of three hours, starting at 9 p.m. on March 5. The victim, Jacquelyn C.
Lux, said she did not lose her debit card nor did anyone in her residence take
it and use it without her knowledge or permission. She said she wants to
prosecute the offender(s) involved.
Violation of order of protection
Robert D. Hall, 48, of 485 Terrace Way Apt. 48, in
Newport, was arrested on Thursday, March 12, and charged with violation of
order of protection, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Two drug charges
Terry L. Fine, 45, of 469 College Street, in Newport, was
arrested on Friday, March 12, and charged with possession of Schedule IV for
resale and possession of a legend drug, Capt. James Holt reported.
Accident at Cocke County High School
Rhonda Kay Blalock, 39, of College Street, in Newport,
was in a 2004 Honda Odyssey van stopped in the Cocke County High School parking
lot for a passing emergency vehicle, on Thursday, March 11, at about 10:30 a.m.
Jack Wayne Manning, 52, of Clevenger Cut-off, in Newport, was in a 1998 Chevy
Blazer S-10 and, unable to stop in time, struck the Honda van in the rear,
Capt. Brad Ball reported.
Accident on West Broadway
Marcia Renea Black, 26, of McGaha Chapel Road, in Cosby,
said she parked her 2005 Honda Accord in the rear parking lot of Salon Neveah
at about 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, and when she came outside at about 3:45
p.m., she noticed some damage to the rear driver's side of her vehicle,
Patrolman William Garber. The Honda was unoccupied at the time of the hit and
run accident.
Theft over $1,000
Det. Donna Hopkins on March 1 spoke with Natasha Swafford
in reference to a theft that Lanny Johnson, 45, reported at the residence they
live at, at 320 Alex St., in Newport. Swafford said she took money and property
from the home, but the items belonged to her. Johnson has not pursued the
original report of theft, and the case was closed.
Theft under $500
April Radar, manager of the BP gas station at 1004 Cosby
Highway, in Newport, said an employee did not inform her of a theft on
Thursday, March 11, that instead she read about it in the newspaper. Radar said
that for a 99-cent theft, the BP gas station would not prosecute, and the case
was closed, Det. Donna Hopkins reported.
Smith & Wesson handgun reported stolen
Geneva Fillers, 42, of Black Walnut Street, in Newport,
said on Thursday, March 11, that someone stole a black Smith & Wesson
semi-automatic handgun. Fillers said the handgun was at her residence on
Sunday, March 7. She noticed it was gone on Thursday, March 11. She said her
husband and son have frequent guests to their home and had no idea who took the
gun, which is valued at $450, Capt. Brad Ball reported.
Theft under $500
James Cureton, 50, of English Street, in Newport, said on
Friday, March 12, that someone between Feb. 1 and Friday, March 12, entered his
unlocked camper behind his residence and stole a Haier compact refrigerator
from it, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported. Cureton said the value of the
refrigerator is $60.
Theft at Huddle House
Belle Richens, of Huddle House, at 1130 West Highway
25/70, in Newport, said an employee on Thursday, March 11, took $19.25 and a
meal ticket from a customer seated at a table, went to the cash register,
opened it, counted the money several times, then put the money in her pocket
and closed the register. Richens said the employee she named then transferred
the meal ticket to the next shift so the next shift's register counted down
short the money. Police saw video that showed the theft, Patrolman Heather
Lawson said.
Breaking and entering, theft under $500
Charlie Ray Huff, 28, of 8th Street, in Newport, said on
Friday, March 12, that someone broke into his home through a broken window. He
said he was missing $50, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
Vehicular assault on two people
Chris Haney said that on Wednesday, March 10, he was
walking in the road on Runnion Street when an acquaintance struck him with a
car, knocking him several feet down the road. Witnesses said Haney and the
acquaintance had been arguing prior to the assault. Miranda Shepherd said that
just prior to the incident, the offender grabbed her, pulled her into the car,
and dragged her several feet, causing injury to her left foot. The offender
allegedly then let her go and then struck Haney. Both victims were transported
to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County by Allied ambulance and treated for
injuries, according to a report with the Newport Police Department.
Lost purse
Celeste Hambrick, 38, of Wright Road, in Newport, said
she lost her purse on Friday, March 12, at Milano's Restaurant on West Highway
25/70. The purse contained two credit cards and a driver's license, with a
total value of $35, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
Assault alleged
Frank Reyes, 54, of St. Johns Drive, in Dandridge, said
that on Saturday, March 13, an acquaintance held him down in a bathroom at a
Mobil gas station, at 416 Driskill Circle, in Newport, with his left hand
around his throat and punched him in the nose. Police noticed Reyes' nose was
swollen, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
