SHERIFF'S REPORTS:
Theft under $500 and failure to appear
James D. Fowler, 31, of 3537 White Birch Road, in White
Pine, was arrested Saturday, March 6, and charged with theft under $500 and
failure to appear, Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported.
Violation of probation
Eugene ("Skip") Pfendler, 47, of 449 Highway
411, in Newport, was arrested Friday, March 5, and charged with violation of
probation, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.
Violation of probation arrest
Paul R. Holt, 48, of 2555 Looney Road, in Parrottsville,
was arrested Friday, March 5, and charged with violation of probation, Deputy
Sheriff Brian Holt reported. Holt turned himself in to the Cocke County
Sheriff's Department.
Violation of order of protection
Susan E. Purkey, 33, of Moonshine Way, said that on
Wednesday, March 10, she and her mother were at Purkey's residence with an
acquaintance showed up at the residence demanding his "stuff." She
has an order of protection against the individual, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.
Break-in reported
David Moore, 42, of Hooper Highway, in Cosby, said that
on Saturday, March 6, around midnight, someone tried to force the door to his
business, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported. Damage is estimated at
approximately $1,000. No entry was made inside the store.
Break-in reported
Melinda Lowe Henderson, 37, of DePaul Road, in Newport,
said that on Wednesday, March 10, while she was gone from her home, someone
broke in through the back door, went through her clothes and other items, but
apparently did not take anything, Sgt. Ricky Holt reported.
Accident on Armory Road
Amber N. Hayes, 23, of Boone Road, in Newport, said that
on Wednesday, March 10, at about 6:30 p.m., she was driving a 1999 Dodge
Avenger on Armory Road at South Highway 321, headed east, when a gold Chevrolet
truck allegedly pulled out in front of her, causing her to swerve into a ditch.
A white truck hit the driver's side back bumper of Hayes' Dodge, then continued
traveling east on Armory Road, Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb reported.
Accident at ConAgra
Ira E. Webb, 56, of Blair Avenue, in Flemington, Mo.,
said he was backing into a dock at ConAgra, in Newport, on Feb. 26, in a 2001
Faht and struck a 2010 International Pro driven by Dudley D. Marshall, 49, of
County Road 5, in Ontario, Canada, in the front end. Damage was minor, Deputy
Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.
Accident on Highway 32
Anthony Scott Stuart, 46, of Holdens Grove, in Cosby,
said he was driving a 1979 Chevrolet on Highway 32, on Thursday, March 4, at
about 7 a.m. Stuart said he was following a 1997 GMC van driven by Edward
Douglas Brannon, 52, of Arch Way, in Cosby, when Brannon "dead
stopped" his GMC van in front of Stuart who could not stop in time.
Brannon said that Stuart tried to pass him on the right side of the road and
then the Chevrolet hit his van, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.
Theft/vandalism reported
Amy Cline, 33, of Gilbert Street, in Parrottsville, said
that sometime between Feb. 26 and Sunday, March 7, someone broke into her 1998
Chevrolet Blazer by breaking off the passenger side door lock. She said the
thief or thieves stole the center caps off of both of the front wheels, but
nothing else. The vehicle was parked in the driveway of Cline's home at the
time of the theft/break-in, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported. The door lock
is valued at $100, and the two wheel center caps at $250.
Accident on Jasmine Drive
Robert H. Ferguson, 27, of Harbin Circle, in Morristown,
said he was backing from private property onto Jasmine Drive at Transport
Drive, on Friday, March 5, at about 9 a.m., in a 2004 Mack MR6 truck owned by
TIDI Waste, when, while trying to miss a mud hole, he backed the truck into a
utility pole. Deputy Sheriff David Crowder noted that the utility pole was
broken into two pieces.
Accident on Big Creek Road
Adam S. Lewellyn, 16, of Old 15th Road, in Del Rio, said
he was traveling west on Big Creek Road when, near Teague Branch Road, the 1996
Toyota Tacoma he was driving left the right side of the road, on Friday, March
5, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported. Lewellyn allegedly overcorrected, crossed
the eastbound lane, and went into a ditch line, causing the vehicle to overturn
and come to a rest in the westbound lane on Big Creek Road. Lewellyn said a
vehicle traveling east had their bright headlights on, so he did not see the
road ahead of time, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
POLICE REPORTS:
Arrested for filing false report and theft over $1,000
Adam King, 27, of 182 Terry St., in Newport, was arrested
Wednesday, March 10, and charged with false report and theft over $1,000. King
was picked up by Det. Lynn Shults. Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported that he
transported King to jail. King was arrested for sworn arrest warrants sworn to
by Det. Donna Hopkins.
Violation of light law, other charge
John A. Cook, 24, of 220 Norwood Drive, in Lenoir City,
was arrested this morning (Thursday) at 1 a.m., and charged with driving on a
suspended license and violation of the light law, Patrolman Amy Elswick
reported.
Arrested for theft under $500 (four counts)
Becky L. Crabtree, 40, of 308 Elena Lane, in Newport, was
arrested Wednesday, March 10, and charged with four counts of theft under $500,
Det. Jason Ramsey reported. Crabtree was allegedly captured on video
surveillance while employed at Mapco Express, at 250 West Broadway, in Newport.
She allegedly took items on Oct. 3, Oct. 4, Oct. 10, and Oct. 11, with a total
value of $677.52.
Theft under $500 and criminal trespass charges
Robert M. Burke, 47, of 450 Cambridge Drive Apt. 3, in
Newport, was arrested Tuesday, March 9, at Walmart, located at 1075 Cosby
Highway, in Newport, and charged with theft under $500 and criminal trespass.
Walmart loss prevention officers allegedly observed Burke take items off the
shelves and get refunds for items he did not pay for, for a total value of
$31.20, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
Missing/lost wallet
Jessica Ellen, 24, of 152 North View, in Newport,
reportedly left her wallet behind in the restroom at the GP gas station on
Cosby Highway, on Wednesday March 10, at 12:45 a.m. The wallet had several
documents in it, for a total value of $135. The wallet is black and white and
has a value of $60, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
Criminal trespass
Bill Manning at Sonic Drive-in, at 256 West Broadway, in
Newport, said on Tuesday, March 9, that a man drove through the Sonic
drive-thru to pick up food. Manning identified the man as someone banned from
the fast food establishment a few years back due to an incident, Patrolman
Robby McMahan reported.
Property damage
Tyler W. Steelman, 19, said he was sitting in his 2007
Toyota Tacoma pickup on Monday, March 8, in the West Broadway Shopping Center,
near the dumpsters, when a black male allegedly tossed a wooden pallet from the
dumpster. It struck Steelman's vehicle on the left side, damaging it. Capt.
James Holt reported that he observed a dent in the left rear of Steelman's
Toyota. Damage is valued at $300.
Accident at National Bank
Freddie Laws, 43, of Lower English Creek Road, in
Newport, said he was stopped in his 2004 Ford F150 truck on Monday, March 8, at
National Bank, located at 262 East Broadway, in Newport. Walter Freeman, 65, of
Old Greeneville Highway, in Parrottsville, allegedly attempted to back up and
accidentally hit the Ford in the passenger side rear. Freeman, who was driving
a 2004 Dodge Durango, said his foot slipped off the brake, Sgt. Jason Smith
reported.
Accident on Epley Road blamed on seizure
Jeffrey Lee Frazier, 40, of Jimtown Road, in Newport, was
taken by EMS to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County on Thursday, March 4, and
treated for a "non-incapacitating" injury, after he pulled into the
Bojangles parking lot on Epley Road at Cosby Highway. Frazier said he felt a
seizure coming on so he started to pull over, but blacked out. Witness Leon
Large said the 2004 Ford Explorer Frazier was driving came around a building
with Frazier slumped over the steering wheel. The vehicle jumped the curb, went
through a guardrail, across both lanes of Epley Road, and then hit the curb on
the other side of Epley Road. The vehicle then rolled back down the street
until it came to rest on a curb, according to the witness. Patrolman Donald
Coakley Jr. reported that the accident occurred at about 9:35 a.m., and that
Frazier's license expired last year. His vehicle suffered disabling damage to
the front end with a value over $400.
