NEWPORT-Despite multiple meetings, what roads are
accepted into the county road system continue to be a focus of debate.
Several roads are on the agenda for Monday's Cocke County
Legislative Body meeting and the Cocke County Highway Commission had even more
discussions during Tuesday's regular meeting.
Of primary concern are roads in various developments
throughout the county, including Blessing Way and roads in the Applewood
Estates.
"I've received calls on Applewood Estates, Highpoint
and Grandview," said Cocke County Road Superintendent John Holloway.
"I don't know what the CLB will do.
"I think the roads should be brought up to the old
regulations before they're accepted," said Highway Commission Chairman
Ronald Blazer.
Holloway said one call, in particular, upset him because
of false allegations.
"There's a rumor that I and (a local builder) are
wanting to take in Blessing Way and develop it," said Holloway.
"That's the biggest lie. I don't even know who owns it. They said there
was a bulldozer up there and wanted to know who it belongs to. I know who it
doesn't belong to and that's us. I got furious when I heard about it
today."
Blazer encouraged Highway Commission members to be present
at Monday's CLB meeting for the road discussions.
In other business Tuesday, commissioners voted to change
Snapdragon Way and Sorghum Way to Snapdragon Road and Sorghum Road due to a 911
labeling error.
Danny Fish questioned progress on improvements on Black
Mountain Road. Holloway said because the work borders U.S. Forest Service
property, "we're having to jump through all the hoops. We've filed every
paper they have asked for."
Commissioners also approved a work plan for the next two
weeks, with most requests focusing on patching, ditching and grading.
