SHERIFF'S REPORTS:
Theft over $500 and false reports
Shauna Caughron, 34, of 958 Apt. B, on the Old
Greeneville Highway, in Newport, and her husband Johnathan Bryant were arrested
Thursday, Feb. 18, after Bryant allegedly took a hammer, knocked a hole in the
bathroom closet ceiling, entered the attic, climbed over to their neighbor's
apartment and knocked a large hole in their ceiling to enter their residence.
Bryant then stole a flat screen TV from the neighbors' residence, Sgt. Armando
Fontes reported. Reserve Deputy Sheriff John Zurcher also assisted in the
investigation and arrests. Caughron was charged with filing a false report and
theft over $500.
Arrested for violation of probation
Kimberly Clevenger, 21, of 496 Jimtown Road, in Newport,
was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 17, and charged with violation of probation,
Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.
Driving on a suspended license
Jamarl Leon Kirkland, 23, of 1301 Boruff St., in
Knoxville, was arrested Sunday, Feb. 14, and charged with driving on a suspended
license, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.
Accident on Dogwood Stand Road
Cindy M. Lenger, 53, of Backfield Road, in Walterboro,
S.C., attempted to go uphill on Dogwood Stand Road, on Thursday, Feb. 17, in a
2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, when, on the snowy/icy road, the truck
lost traction and would not move. Lenger said she called Douglas W. Sumrall,
66, of 4220 Dogwood Stand Road, in Hartford, who was driving a 1997 Chevrolet
Blazer SUV, to help her. Sumrall said when he rounded the curve at the top of
the hill, he could not get stopped in time on the icy road and struck the
Chevrolet Silverado, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.
Accident on Golf Course Road
Stephanie L. Maxwell, 16, of 1129 East 2nd North St., in
Morristown, was traveling north in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala on Thursday, Feb.
18, on Golf Course Road, at Green Acres, when the vehicle left the right side
of the road, went down an embankment, and then struck a tree before coming to a
stop. Maxwell said she swerved to miss a cat, causing the accident, Deputy
Sheriff C. J. Ball reported.
Break-in/vandalism reported
Renee Deisher, 41, of Parrottsville, said she returned
home on Thursday, Feb. 18, from work, and noticed the front door was open.
Apparently the burglar entered the home from the attic, which had a hole,
Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. A stolen 32-inch Sansui TV was valued at
$800, and the damage to the attic worth $200.
Aggravated burglary/theft/vandalism
Jeffrey Grooms, 20, of 2927 Apt. 1, Cosby Highway, in
Cosby said that sometime between noon and 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, someone
broke into his home and stole a 32-inch Vizio flat screen TV which he valued at
$600, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Accident on Ravens Branch Road
Dennis B. Freeman, 64, of South Highway 107, in Del Rio,
was driving a 1994 Subaru Legacy SUV, on Wednesday, Feb. 17, headed north on
Ravens Branch Road, on a down hill grade when, while negotiating a curve on a
snow-covered road, a 1983 Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Stacy A. Black,
37, of Tanglewood Way, in Hartford, was traveling south on an uphill grade.
Black apparently tried to stay to the inside of the curve, which had an
estimated 15-foot straight off drop on the outside. The 1983 Ford Ranger was to
the left side of the road when it struck the Subaru Legacy in the northbound
lane, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.
Accident on Big Creek Road
Jeffrey R. Bullington, 44, of Shelby Way, in Hartford,
was traveling in a 1976 Ford F10 pickup truck, on Big Creek Road, on Tuesday,
Feb. 16. The road was covered with ice and snow. Bullington said he saw a 2003
Ford F-350 coming out of a curve on his side of the road. Bullington said he
stopped his vehicle. He said it appeared to him that the driver of the Ford,
Brian T. O'Connell, of Palm Harbor, in Florida, tried to stop but could not due
to the road being covered with ice, Sgt. David Crum reported.
Accident on Indian Camp Creek Road
A driver apparently pulled up to a driveway at 4636
Indian Camp Creek Road, in Cosby, on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 2 a.m., and parked
the 1999 Chevrolet Camaro, set the emergency brake, and got out of the vehicle.
The vehicle began sliding down a hill, striking a 1956 Cadillac Eldorado that
was also parked and driverless. The driveway was icy at the time of the
accident, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.
POLICE REPORTS:
Arrested and charged with theft under $500
Christopher C. Shropshire, 23, of 573 Polly Branch Way,
in Cosby, was arrested Thursday, Feb. 18, and charged with theft under $500,
Patrolman Donald Coakley reported. An employee at Food City West, at 181
Western Plaza Drive, in Newport, said she saw Coakley pick up two packages of
meat worth $47.98. He then apparently hid them under his shirt, according to
the report.
Violation of probation (two charges)
Helen King, 27, of 114 Way, in Newport, was arrested
Thursday, Feb. 18, on Broadway in front of ConAgra, and charged with two counts
of violation of probation out of Cocke County Sessions Court, Sgt. Jason Smith
reported.
Recovery of stolen license plate
Police said they ran a license plate on a red Pontiac
Grand Prix on Friday, Feb. 19, in the area of the City Park Grocery, and it
came back stolen. The plate was entered into a national database as stolen on
July3, by the Newport Police Department, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
Stacie Espicito at 190 Robins Street said the vehicle was hers and that she did
not know the tag displayed on it was stolen. She was cited into Cocke County
Sessions Court for theft under $500, McMahan reported.
Accident in Hardees Restaurant parking lot
Danny R. Hurst, 20, of 136 North Ridge Drive, in
Parrottsville, said he tried to park a 2007 Toyota Tacoma pickup he was
driving, in the Hardee's Restaurant parking lot, at 816 Cosby Highway, in
Newport, on Thursday, Feb. 18, when he did not turn deep enough and hit the
rear end of a 1998 Buick Century, owned by Pauline Fink Owenby, of Liberty
Road, in Cosby, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.
Accident at Blue Ridge Apartments
Peggy Fine, 54, of Viewmont Circle, in Newport, was
driving a 2001 Dodge van on Thursday, Feb. 18, and was backing up, trying to
back into a parking space at the Blue Ridge Apartments and did not see a 2004
Dodge Neon driven by Joe McGaha, 56, of Strawberry Way, in Newport, Patrolman Donald
Coakley reported. The Dodge van backed into the driver side rear of the Dodge
Neon. McGaha said he was backing out of a parking space at the apartment
complex and did not see the Dodge van. The Dodge Neon then backed into the
driver side rear of the Dodge van.
Man struck with possibly a small bat
Charles Edward Mason, 32, of Golf Course Road, in
Newport, told police on Friday, Feb. 12, at the emergency room of an area
hospital that an unknown white male tapped him on the shoulder and then struck
him in the left side of his face several times, perhaps with a small bat. Mason
said "some people" were upset with him over some recent drug arrests
in the area. Mason said nothing was stolen in the incident, Patrolman Matthew
Elliott reported.
