SHERIFF'S REPORTS:

 

 

 

Assault charge and arrest

Chris Sneed, 26, of 2249 Bogard Road, in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 12, and charged with assault after he was found to have an arrest warrant out of Knox County, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. The assault allegedly occurred Jan. 21, 2010.

 

Arrested for domestic assault

Floyd Wasilewski, 59, of 1400 Windswept Way, in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 12, and charged with domestic assault, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. Wasilewski allegedly grabbed the victim by the back of the head on Feb. 11 and shoved her against the wall. On Feb. 12, he allegedly took a drill and held it to her head.

 

Accident on Highway 321 North

Timothy E. Coakley, 51, of 1424 Good Hope Road, in Parrottsville, said he was driving a 1991 Ford F-150 truck south on Highway 321 North on Tuesday, Feb. 9 when his vehicle entered the unpaved portion next to Good Hope Road and struck a dirt hill. The vehicle then crossed Highway 321, struck a large embankment, reentered Highway 321 and collided with a 1991 Chevy pickup truck driven by Phillip Ray Claypool, 53, of 330 Ailey Road, in Dandridge, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported. The Ford was struck in the passenger side, resulting in serious damage. Coakley was transported to the emergency room of Baptist Hospital of Cocke County.

 

Theft reported

Mayford Eslinger, 66, of Old Sevierville Highway, said he returned home on Tuesday, Feb. 9, and noticed some items missing from his back porch: a hedge trimmer (valued at $50), two Homelite chainsaws ($200), a 20-foot air hose ($20), and an air compressor ($100), Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

 

Accident on Carson Springs Loop Road

Robert L. Banks, 21, of West Highway 25/70, said he was traveling north on Carson Springs Loop Road in a 1998 Ford Ranger truck, on Wednesday, Feb. 10, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported. Banks allegedly applied his brakes to negotiate a curve, when his truck slid off the right side of Carson Springs Loop Road and struck a rock. Banks said snow was on the road and the road was very slippery.

 

Accident on Blueberry Way

Candace Singleton, 23, of Idle Way, in Parrottsville, said that on Friday, Feb. 12, she attempted to turn onto Blueberry Way from Paw Paw Way when an icy road caused the vehicle to slide into the driveway where a 2002 GMC Sierra truck was parked, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. Singleton was driving a 2003 Saturn Vue SUV.

 

 

 

POLICE:

 

 

 

Speeding and no driver's license

Gabriel T. Rojas, 26, of 471 Long Ave., in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 12, after he was allegedly caught driving 45 m.p.h. in a 20 m.p.h. zone near the City Park Grocery store on Smith Street. Rojas was charged with speeding and not having a driver's license, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

 

Vandalism over $500

Donald J. Holt, 25, of 563 Polly Branch Way, in Cosby, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 9:50 p.m., and charged with vandalism over $500. Holt was allegedly involved in an altercation in the bar area of the Sagebrush Steakhouse & Saloon, at 201 Heritage Blvd., in Newport, with Brandon Dunn. Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported that during the altercation, Holt allegedly picked up a bar stool and struck a neon Miller Lite sign with the legs of the bar stool. The sign was valued at $1,000.

 

Driver and passenger arrested and given different charges

Conrad Morales, 28, of 260 Carson Springs Road, in Newport, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 9 p.m. and charged with driving on a suspended license. Capt. Scott Lamb reported that he observed the vehicle that Morales was driving cross the centerline of Cosby Highway and almost strike Lamb's patrol car. Morales was stopped, and a status check reported that Morales had a suspended driver's license for failure to satisfy a citation out of Sevier County. The passenger in Morales's vehicle, Ashley J. Green, 26, of 1656 Bullard Drive, in Newport, was charged with possession of Schedule II and possession of Schedule IV. Green allegedly gave Patrolman Amy Elswick permission to search her purse. Elswick wrote that she found two white pills suspected to be Xanax, and one peach-colored pill suspected to be Oxycodone. Green allegedly said she did not know where the pills came from and that a relative who lives in Knoxville gave her purse to her.

 

Accidental shooting

Michael Ellison, 25, of 636 Myers Circle, in Newport, said he was trying to empty a 22-caliber Interarm long rifle on Thursday, Feb. 11, Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported. Ellison said he tried to rack the weapon when his finger caught the trigger and he shot himself in the right leg. Ellison was taken to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County for treatment of his injuries. The rifle was released into the custody of Ellison's grandmother.

 

Harassment alleged

Amanda Cabrera, the complainant, said an acquaintance called Maria Cabrera a vulgar name and cursed her, on Friday, Feb. 12, at Save-A-Lot, at 1043 Cosby Highway, in Newport. The two women were shopping in the store when the acquaintance complained to them than an identified man in jail owed her child support and Maria Cabrera needed to give her the money, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported.

 

Theft of property under $500

Bartley W. Gentry, 32, of Musterfield Road, in Newport, said on Thursday, Feb. 11, he was in the process of moving from one residence to a new one when he realized he was missing a 20-gauge Remington 870 Express shotgun. Gentry said he had the shotgun put up in a box for about the last two years. He told Det. Lynn Shults he did not know how long it had been missing. The shotgun was valued at $300.

 

Assault reported

Hannah Mantooth, 21, of Jefferson Street, in White Pine, said an acquaintance shoved her up against a wall at the River Ridge Apartments on Friday, Feb. 12, while she held her youngest child, and jumped into her truck and looked at her cell phone and browsed through her text messages. She said she had an order of protection against the man, in Jefferson County, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

 

Accident reported

Truitt Van Ottinger, 50, of Bacon Valley Road, in Parrottsville, said he was driving a 2003 GMC K1500 truck towards the back of the parking lot of Walgreens, at 102 East Broadway, in Newport, on Friday, Feb. 12. Jessica L. McNealy, 25, of View Mount Circle, in Newport, was backing a 2002 Ford EPR truck out of a parking place and came in contact with the GMC truck in the driver side rear bumper, causing minor damage to both vehicles. Central dispatch showed that McNealy's license had been revoked out of Cocke County, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

 

Assault/vandalism alleged

Natalie Cothern, of Alex Street, in Newport, said an acquaintance cursed her and then a relative at the house next door on Friday, Feb. 12. The acquaintance said he knocked on the relative's door, but the owner became mad and pushed him off his porch and chased him down the road, trying to hurt him, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. Cothern said her screen door suffered damages worth $200.

 

Accident on West Highway 25/70

Two people were injured in an accident on Monday, Feb. 8, at 9:20 p.m., on West Highway 25/70 at Hedrick Drive, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. Derek Allen Shropshire, 26, of Cosby Highway, in Newport, said he was traveling east in a 2004 Buick RNR on Highway West 25/70 at Hedrick Drive when Cora Nell Cogdill, 64, of Lennon Circle, in Newport, allegedly failed to stop her 1994 Toyota for a traffic light. That caused Cogdill to strike Shropshire's Buick. Shropshire said he had a green light to proceed through the intersection. Cogdill said she was turning on Highway 25/70 when Shropshire struck her vehicle. She said she had the green light to go through the intersection. Both cars suffered major damages and had to be towed away from the scene.

 

Accident on State Route 25/70

Terry L. Fine, 45, of College Street, in Newport, said he stopped the 2008 Toyota he was driving and facing west at the red light at the intersection of Highway 25/70 and 25E, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. Fine said he wanted to make a left turn into a shopping center but did not see Stephen T. Robinson, 23, of Greystone Way, in Newport, behind him in a 1996 Cadillac Seville before Fine started backing up. Fine's Toyota struck the Cadillac in the front end, doing minor damage.

 

Accident on Morrell Springs Road

Meta Holder, 59, of Green Acres Drive, in Newport, said she was driving a 2001 Pontiac west on Morrell Springs Road in the curve between Heritage and Golf Course Road, on Monday, Feb. 8. Holder told Sgt. Jason Smith she remembered hearing "a bang noise" but did not remember seeing the other vehicle coming. Wesley Butler, 63, of Bogard Road, in Newport, said he was driving a 1993 Nissan pickup headed east on Morrell Springs Road when he observed Holder in her Pontiac drifting over into his lane before she struck him in the left side of his vehicle and spun him around. Holder's vehicle suffered disabling damage on the left side-far front, worth more than $400. Butler's Nissan also suffered disabling damage over $400, to the left side-center of his vehicle. Both vehicles were towed away.

 

Accident on State Route 25/70

Jocie Douglas, 93, of Bybee, said she was traveling east in a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina, on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at about 9:55 a.m., on Highway 25/70 at McSween Avenue, when Michael Paul Meyer, 35, of Long Avenue, in Newport, allegedly opened the driver side door to a 1995 Dodge Intrepid he was driving and Douglas' vehicle hit the door, damaging the whole passenger side of the Chevrolet. Meyer said he had parked his car in a parking space in front of the Cocke County Courthouse on Highway 25/70 when he opened his door and Douglas struck the driver side door with her Chevrolet, damaging the door so it would not close, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported. Douglas suffered "functional damage" on the right side-near front of her Chevrolet, worth over $400. Meyer reportedly suffered "functional damage" on the left side-center of his vehicle, worth over $400. The Dodge was towed away.

 

Arrested for six charges

Glenn E. Edmonds, 31, of 438 Old Sevierville Highway, in Newport was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 10, and charged with theft under $500 (three counts), vandalism under $500 (two charges), and vandalism over $500. Edmonds allegedly was caught shoplifting two DVD videos worth a total of $39.22. At the time of the arrest, Edmonds allegedly had five outstanding warrants, Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported.

 

Accident on North Street

Michael Evans, 61, of Dell Way, in Parrottsville was, on Wednesday, Feb. 10, allegedly going around a residence in a 1989 Grumman LLV truck, at 592 North Street, in Newport when Walter Curtis Mell, 48, of 10 Sorgen CT, in Baltimore, MD., was in a 1984 Chevrolet van that struck the truck in the door, breaking the window out and making a dent in the door. Mell said he did not see the truck. The truck had a small scratch on the front bumper and trim around the headlight was broken, Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported.

 

Theft of property/violation of rental contract

Aaron's of Newport employee Andrew Boyette said a man rented a 42-inch LG TV on Sept. 18 and has not made a payment since Dec. 17. Boyette said the man has missed two payments, and owes Aarons $170.86. The cost to replace the TV, if it is not returned, is $724.90, Capt. Brad Ball reported on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

 

Theft of property/violation of rental contract

Aaron's employee Andrew Boyette said on Wednesday, Feb. 10, that a woman of Carson Springs Road rented a 32-inch Sylvania TV on Dec. 21, but has not made a payment since that date, missing a payment due Jan. 1. Boyette said the woman owes $100.81 to Aarons. The cost to replace the TV is $358, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

 

Another theft of property/violation of rental contract

Aaron's employee Andrew Boyette said on Wednesday, Feb. 10 that a woman rented a 32-inch Sylvania TV and an Xbox 360 on April 24 and has not made a payment since Nov. 1. The woman has missed four payments and owes $493.01 in rental fees. The cost to replace the two items is $655, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

 

Accident at Save-A-Lot parking lot

Jennifer Walker, 30, of 430 Terrace Way, in Newport, said she walked out of the Save-A-Lot grocery store at 1043 Cosby Highway on Thursday, Feb. 11, and returned to her car where she noticed there was some damage to the hood, Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported. She said the hit and run offender damaged her 1997 Ford Taurus.

 

Harassment

Jennie Dawn James, 41, of Fara Way, in Newport, she was went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts store, at 338 Cosby Highway, in Newport, on Wednesday, Feb. 10. She said she went to get some windshield wash when she saw an acquaintance and his son come out of the store and get into a truck. James said that in order to avoid a confrontation, she got back in her vehicle and went up the road to the Mt. Crest Inn, where she was staying. James said the man and his son pulled up beside her on the road and that the driver tried to run her off the road, Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported.

 

Violation of order of protection

Cheryl Denise Denton, 20, of Rankin Hill Road, in Newport, said on Thursday, Feb. 11, that an acquaintance was in a vehicle at McDonald's on Cosby Highway bothering her. Denton said she had an order of protection against the acquaintance who allegedly had texted and called Denton's friend's cell phone in an attempt to have her talk to Denton on behalf of the acquaintance, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

 

Theft from vehicle

Lanny Warren, 45, of Alex Street, in Newport, offered "a friend of a friend" he saw walking down Cosby Highway on Thursday, Feb. 11, a ride to a Bowman Drive residence. Warren said the individual left his vehicle in a hurry and Warren noticed there was an envelope missing from the console that had $638 in it. Warren was not able to find the acquaintance, Patrolman Thomas Whitfield reported.
