Accident on McGaha Chapel Road

Corry W. Shropshire, 21, of 3220 Boomer Way, in Cosby, was in an accident in a 1994 Ford EPR on Wednesday, Feb. 10, on McGaha Chapel Road at Bogard Road, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

Accident on Rocky Top Road

Ice on the road was to blame for an accident in a curve on Rocky Top Road, on Sunday, Jan. 31, Sgt. David Crum reported. The road was apparently covered with snow and ice at about 2:30 a.m. when Charles Chick Jr., 44, of Log Church Road, in Newport, was driving a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck that collided with a 1999 Jeep Lim driven by Brian J. Beretta, 16, of 990 Old Asheville Highway, in Newport.

Lack of sleep blamed for accident

Robert L. Clevenger, 41, of Lonesome Pine Road, in Bybee, said he was traveling north on Buffalo Road at Highway 160, in a 2004 Chevy Blazer, on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when he fell asleep and his vehicle left the left side of the road. Clevenger reportedly received minor injuries and was transported by Allied EMS to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Clevenger said he had been working a lot of hours and had not had any sleep for a while, causing him to doze off while driving, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

Hit and run driver

Charles S. Shell, 59, of Johnson Street, in Newport, said he was driving a 1994 Cadillac Eldorado on New Cave Church Road, at Ample Way, on Saturday, Feb. 6, when he saw a green older model pickup truck behind him. Shell said the pickup truck driver kept speeding up his vehicle and then slowing down, staying within two feet of the rear of his Cadillac. Shell said the back of his car started sliding sideways, he turned the steering wheel to the right to try to straighten up his path, and the truck rear-ended him. Shell said he went into a ditch on the right side of the road, bounced up, went into a yard, and struck and destroyed a dogwood tree, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.

Naoma Seay, 87, of South 107 Highway, said on Tuesday, Feb. 9, that she put a check in an envelope for $8.80 to purchase stamps from the U.S. Post office. She later found the envelope on the ground and the check was gone, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

Child abducted, then returned

The mother of a three-year-old said her ex-boyfriend grabbed her child and ran to his truck, telling the mother he had a gun under his seat and to not stop him from leaving, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported. The child was later found and returned to his mother. Prior to the kidnapping, the ex-boyfriend and the mother had a fight that led to the man pulling a knife on the mother and telling her if she got close to him, he would kill her.
