Violation of probation

Melissa J. Zook, 19, of 575 Teague Road, in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 5, and charged with violation of probation, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

 

Drug and other charges in arrest

Christopher J. Haney, 19, of 356 White Oak Ave., in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 5, and charged with domestic assault, theft under $500, possession of Schedule VI drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

 

Theft of Social Security check

Shirley Lewis, 66, of Briggs Avenue, said a relative failed to bring her Social Security check to her at Newport Health and Rehabilitation for Lewis to sign it. On Jan. 3. She said she later found out her rent had not been paid and the check had been cashed, but she did not receive any money from it, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. The check was for $598.

 

Theft reported

Sandra Evans, 43, of Highway 160, in Newport, said that on Thursday, Feb. 4, around 9 p.m., an acquaintance came to her home and allegedly stole her daughter's laptop computer (valued at $1,500) and a Sony PSP game system (valued at $200), and pawned it, Lt. Rick Laws reported.

 

Aggravated burglary/theft over $1,000

Lisa Reed, 46, of Windswept Way, in Newport, said that on Friday, Feb. 5, someone entered her home and stole items totaling $4,209 in value, including: a Wii game system ($199), a one carat diamond ring ($600), a wedding band and engagement ring ($800), a digital camera ($400), a Mother's Day ring with the names of kids on it ($500), and a gold ring ($200), Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.

 

Stuck gas pedal on Land Rover blamed for accident

Diane M. Phillips, 60, of 938 Browns Chapel Road, in Parrottsville, said that on Thursday, Feb. 4, she dropped off her garbage at the Parrottsville Convenience Center and began to leave when the gas pedal to her 1998 Land Rover SUV got stuck, causing her to strike several dumpsters inside the center, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

 

Driver of vehicle in head-on collision flees scene of accident

Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported that on Sunday, Jan. 31, at about 5:30 p.m., on Round Mountain near the 107 Highway, Shannon A. Smith, 35, of South Highway 67, in Cripple Creek, was headed east on Round Mountain and a Jeep WR was headed west on the road when the two vehicles collided head-on, causing front-end damage to both vehicles. The driver of the Jeep was allegedly Jamie L. Cortez, 30, of 1226 Fox Chase Road, in Newport. Cortez allegedly left the scene of the accident before the deputy sheriff arrived. Cortez was later charged with leaving the scene, no proof of insurance, and registration.

 

Accident on Highway 321 at Rock Hill Road

Roger Phillips, 59, of Church Street, in Greeneville, was traveling south on Highway 321 on Tuesday, Feb. 2, on Highway 321, at Rock Hill Road, when a deer allegedly jumped into the path of his 1995 Buick LCF, striking the front end of the vehicle and causing moderate damage, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

 

Accident on Highway 321 at Roy Road

Jacquel M. Garriga, 57, of Mica Way, in Cosby, said she was traveling north on Highway 321 at Roy Road, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at about 10:40 p.m. when a truck allegedly crossed the center line and struck the driver's side of Garriga's 2006 Mercury, then fled the scene of the accident. Garriga said all she could see was that "some type of truck" headed south on Highway 321 hit her vehicle, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported.

 

 

 

POLICE REPORTS

 

 

 

Two charges in arrest

Dustin Toby, 18, of 440 Orchard View Drive, in Newport, was arrested on Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Parkway Inn on Cosby Highway, in Newport, and charged with theft of property under $500 and fraudulent use of a debit or credit card, Det. Lynn Shults reported. Toby allegedly admitted he performed several transactions at an ATM machine on the account of Sammy Crum, of Jones Circle, in Newport, that totaled $660.

 

Vandalism reported

Susan Mason, 49, of Mt. View Street, in Newport, said on Thursday, Feb. 4, that between Jan. 20 and Feb. 2, someone cut a V shape on the driver's side of the vinyl top to a 1993 Geo Tracker vehicle that she left at an automotive shop to be repaired. The cost to replace the vinyl top was estimated to be $275, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

 

Assault alleged

Doyle Foshe said on Thursday, Feb. 4, that he went to a residence on Jones Circle, in Newport, to pick up an acquaintance. Foshe said the two got into an argument and the acquaintance hit him in the eye. Foshe said he had to grab the acquaintance by the throat to keep the person off him. Foshe had a cut above the left eye and was treated at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. The acquaintance said she and her dad started asking Foshe to leave their home, but he would not. The acquaintance had marks on her throat where Foshe apparently had choked her, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

 

Theft of medication alleged

Betty Jane Sutton, 63, of Briggs Avenue, in Newport, said a relative and two friends went to her residence on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Sutton said the next morning that she found medicine worth $308 gone, as well as $70 that was taken, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

 

Phone harassment alleged

Joseph Ray Jacobs, 30, of Harper Circle, in Newport, said that on Thursday, Feb. 4, he received several text messages and phone calls from a person he was arrested for domestic assault on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Jacobs said he had been ordered not to have contact with that person, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

 

Accident at Dollar General store

An unnamed driver of a 2006 Chrysler 300 owned by Ben Stokley, of Rankin Hill Road, in Newport, said she had parked in front of the Dollar General Store on Cosby Highway at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4. When the driver returned at 1 p.m., she discovered someone had hit the driver's side rear of the car and then left the scene before police arrived, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

 

Vehicle left parked in lot is hit

Annie Nicole Perryman, of Lane Drive, in Newport, said on Tuesday, Feb. 2, that she parked her 1999 Nissan Altima in the Sagebrush Restaurant parking lot in Newport about 7:45 p.m. Perryman said she entered the restaurant, ate, and came out one-half hour later and noticed her vehicle had been hit in the front bumper, Patrolman Allen Stump reported.

 

Fraudulent use of a credit card

Meghan A. Cole, 25, of 1310 Finchum Road, in Newport, was arrested on Monday, Feb. 1, and charged with fraudulent use of a credit card. On Jan. 6, the card's owner told police he lost his billfold while picking up parts at Advance Auto in Newport. He was advised then to contact the banks and his credit card companies to cancel his cards; however, his Discover Card was used for $500 at Walmart before he could stop his card's use. Police allegedly viewed Walmart security video and identified Cole as the person using the owner's credit card to purchase a gift card of $500, Det. Lynn Shults reported.

 

Drugs possession and warrant for robbery

Brady D. Watson, 20, of 148 Valley Walker Road in Cosby, was arrested Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11 p.m., at Food City West End in Newport, Capt. James Holt reported. Watson was charged with possession of Schedule VI drugs in excess of 4.5 grams (marijuana), possession of Schedule II Oxycodone 80 mg (39 pills), and had a warrant for robbery of a residence at 256-Suncrest Way. Officers allegedly seized the drugs on Watson, and $520 in cash. He was read his rights and gave a written statement saying he was selling pills, Holt reported.

 

Arrested for rape of a child

A 17-year-old Newport resident was arrested Monday, Feb. 1, and charged with two counts of a rape of a child. He allegedly gave a statement to Det. Jason Ramsey and a Department of Child Services investigator that he committed the act of rape on an 11-year-old relative in late November 2009 and January 2010. The rapes allegedly occurred at the same home where both live.

 

Vehicle damage blamed on snow and ice

Brian Evans, 40, of Fontana Street, in Newport, said on Saturday, Jan. 30 that he was traveling on Freeman Avenue and had turned onto Ann Circle. He told Patrolman William Garber that he lost traction and control of his vehicle due to the snow and ice on the road. He slid into several trees, causing damage to the front, rear, and passenger's side of his vehicle, a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Damages to the Jeep were estimated to be $3,000.

 

Stolen tag reported

Shelia Langston, 56, of Rice Street, in Newport reported that her mechanic Scott McMahan said when he went outside to work on her 1996 Buick on Jan. 25 that he found the tag to the vehicle had been stolen, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.

 

Missing items recovered

Sally Hall, 52, of Old Valley Road, in Sevierville, said to police on Monday, Feb. 1, that she had recovered all the items missing from her handbag that she accidentally left behind at a local business in Newport, on Jan. 27. Hall allegedly said she did not wish to pursue prosecution of a suspect.

 

Harassment alleged

Jesse Bailey, 55, of Midnight Way, in Parrottsville, told the Newport Police Department that on Friday, Jan. 29, he was driving home when an acquaintance passed him and made a crude, vulgar motion with his hand. Bailey said he has had problems with the man before and has filed reports with the Cocke County Sheriff's Department about the suspect vandalizing his property.

 

Driving on a revoked license

Terry L. Fine, 45, of 469 College St., in Newport, was arrested Friday, Feb. 5, and charged with driving on a revoked license, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. Fine was allegedly in a vehicle accident on Highway 25/70. A check with central dispatch showed Fine's license had been revoked for reckless endangerment, Gorrell reported.

 

Stolen property found at pawnshop

David L. Ogle Jr., 65, of Hulbert Cemetery Road, in Sevierville, said he located property he claims was stolen from him at his residence in Jefferson County. He said he filed a report with the Jefferson County's Sheriff's Office on Nov. 27 on the theft of a small toolbox with various tools, a Makita drill, a Makita skill saw, and other multiple items. Ogle said he located the items at a local pawnshop. The pawnshop gave the police the name of the person who pawned the item, of an unknown address in Newport. The items were pawned Nov. 28, one day after Ogle reported their theft. The business owner at Newport Pawn allegedly told Ogle he could buy all the stolen items for a total of $50 - a price considerably less than what they were marked on the shelf of the pawnshop, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

 

Theft of Samurai sword and medication

Madalyn Trent called the police Feb. 5 to her residence at Lamon Circle to report a theft. Trent named an acquaintance she believes stole a Samurai sword (valued at $100), a rented HP laptop (worth $700), and medication, while Trent was asleep, Capt. Scott Lamb reported.

 

Breaking and entering/theft over $1,000

Glenn Ball, pastor of Old Time Gospel Church, at 445 Beech St., in Newport, said on Thursday, Jan. 28, that he noticed someone had pried open a window to get into the church. The thief stole a JVC HD Everio valued at $1,815, Patrolman Travis Gorrell.

 

Drugs and other charges

Lisa K. Jenkins, 44, of 2540 Old Long Creek Road, in Del Rio, was arrested on Friday, Feb. 5, and charged with theft under $500, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of Schedule II drugs, and possession of Schedule IV drugs. Jenkins was reportedly stopped when she tried to shoplift items from Walmart, on Cosby Highway, in Newport, worth a total of $64.22, Patrolman Joshua D. Veridal. Jenkins was charged with trying to shoplift an Oil of Olay bottle (valued at $21), Aveeno ($21), Bio Oil ($16), and a hair pin ($7). She also had on her drugs, a silver spoon with a blue residue on it and burn marks on the bottom of the spoon, and one white straw with residue, Veridal reported.
