SHERIFF'S REPORTS:

 

Theft reported

Darlene Dorsey, 51, of Senior Way, said two homes near each other on Carpenter Road had been vandalized Sunday, Jan. 31, Lt. Richard Caldwell reported. Dorsey said a thief took a fish tank (valued at $800) and a flat top stove ($2,000) from 122 Carpenter Road, and a snake and other items from 144 Carpenter Road.

 

Damage to vehicle reported

Sandy Neblett, 44, of 9th Street, in Newport, said she was traveling east on Highway 25/70, on Monday, Feb. 1, when the window on a vehicle loaded on a rollback tow truck allegedly blew out and came back and damaged the victim's vehicle, Lt. Rick Laws reported. Neblett said damage was done to the left front fender and hood of her vehicle. In addition, she said, the front windshield was blown out.

 

Theft reported

Oscar Dotson, 63, of Battle Road, in Newport, said that sometime between Wednesday, Jan. 27 and Sunday, Jan. 31, someone stole a Winchester model 02-A bolt-action rifle from his home, which he valued at $2,500, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. He said he thought he knew who committed the crime.

 

Attempted theft/vandalism

Tony Davis of George B. Stone Company reported that sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 28, and 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 1, someone attempted to steal a Bobcat skid loader by breaking off the keypad control and attempting to hot wire the Bobcat. It was parked in the median of Highway 40 near the 431 milemarker, where the George B. Stone Co. has been doing highway construction work, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported. The Bobcat is valued at $2,000.

 

Theft of money reported

William Raines, 36, of Heatherbrook Way, in Newport, said that on Friday, Jan. 29, while he was sleeping, someone stole $351 in cash from him, Deputy Sheriff  Tony Bailey reported. Raines named a suspect.

 

Aggravated burglary/domestic assault

Diane Carter, 54, of Emerald Way, in Parrottsville, said an acquaintance came to her residence on Saturday, Jan. 30, broke in, beat her, and stole a 12-gauge, double barrel shotgun valued at $5,000. The person also allegedly shattered Carter's Erickson cell phone so she could not call 911, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported. The cell phone is valued at $150.

 

Vehicle hits deer

Rebecca D. Bailey, 36, of Allen Chapel Road, said that on Tuesday, Jan. 26, she was traveling south on Good Hope Road when a deer ran out into the road and struck her vehicle, doing damage to the undercarriage of the vehicle, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. The value of the damage was unknown at the time, the report stated.

 

Accident on Long Creek Road

Roy Scott Cameron, 30, of Industrial Road, in Newport, said that he was traveling east on Long Creek Road in a 1999 Ford F-15 pickup truck, on Sunday, Jan. 31, when he pulled over to the right for an oncoming vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet driven by James Vincent Maynard, 23, of Hidden Hills Way, in Parrottsville. The Chevrolet slid into the Ford pickup truck on Cameron's side of the road, Lt. Rick Laws reported. Maynard said that when he met the Ford in the curve, he panicked and applied his brakes, causing his Chevrolet to slide into Cameron's Ford.

 

Ice blamed for accident

Charles Chick Jr., 44, of Log Church Road, in Newport, said he was driving a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck, on Sunday, Jan. 31, at about 2:30 a.m., on Rocky Top Road. The road was covered with snow and ice, Sgt. David Crum reported. The Ford hit a 1999 Jeep driven by Brian J. Beretta, 16, of Old Asheville Highway, in Newport, in a curve.

 

Arrested and charged with domestic assault

Alicia Lynn Gilliam, 34, of 1918 Cliff Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with domestic assault, Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported.

 

Theft reported

Bruce Wedemayer, 57, of Manna Way, in Cosby, said on Wednesday, Feb. 3, that an acquaintance picked up his tractor at Wedemayer's home to do some repairs on it, and then return the truck to him. Wedemayer said he never saw the tractor again, and that the acquaintance sold it in Georgia. The truck is valued at $3,500, Sgt. David Crum reported.

 

Money withdrawn from account of inmate without his permission

Shawn Meeks, 34, of Newport, told Deputy Sheriff Danny Hartsell that an acquaintance took his check card to another acquaintance to hold while Meeks was in jail. However, Meeks said the husband of the second acquaintance withdrew money out of Meeks' account without his permission.

 

Theft reported

Jillian Plummer, 23, of Meeks Way, in Newport, said she was working in the lunge at the Family Inns West motel on Friday, Jan. 29, when sometime between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., someone stole her medication from her jacket that was hanging on the back of a chair on the customer side of the bar, Sgt. David Crum reported.

 

Arrested for leaving scene of an accident

Jamie Lee Cortez, 30, of Fox Chase Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with leaving the scene of an accident of property damage, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported. Thornton wrote that Cortez was the driver of a Jeep Wrangler on Round Mountain Road that was involved in the accident. He left the scene of the accident before police arrived, Thornton wrote.

 

Arrested for aggravated burglary and theft over $1,000

Joshua Stuart, 25, of 1938 Brooks Cemetery Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with aggravated burglary and theft over $1,000, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported. The crime allegedly occurred on Oct. 26, 2009.

 

Theft over $500

Melissa Noel, 22, of Log Church Road, said that on Wednesday, Feb. 3, while she was visiting two acquaintances on Ed's Way, another person visiting their home grabbed her purse and ran out the back door around 2 a.m. Noel said she had $3,300 in cash in the purse. The third person appeared to be "under the influence," according to those present, Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported. Noel was staying at the Mountain Crest Inn until today at 11 a.m.

 

Aggravated burglary, theft over $500

Ramie Cox, 34, of Evans Valley Road, said that on Tuesday, Feb. 2, someone pried open a door to her home and took several items, including a Nintendo Wii game console (valued at $250), a Nintendo PlayStation ($150), six Wii games (valued at $40 each), and assorted clothing for an 11-year-old girl ($50), Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported.

 

Accident on Lower Bogard Road

James W. Grubb, 55, of Lane Drive, in Newport, was driving a 2008 Kia Sportage SUV, on Sunday, Jan. 31, on Lower Bogard Road at Early Road, at about 9:20 a.m. when he was involved in an accident, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.

 

Accident at Edgemont School's parking lot

Holly Stuart, 29, of Mountain Ranch Road, in Newport, was driving a 2007 Kia SXC, on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 8:30 a.m., at Edgemont Elementary School's parking lot, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. Stuart allegedly slowed to turn into the school from Carson Springs Road when Conrad Morales, 28, of Carson Springs Road, in Newport, stated his foot slipped off the brake of a 2001 Lincoln LS he was driving and struck the Kia from behind. It appeared neither vehicle suffered any damage, Webb reported.

 

Accident on Highway 321

Roger Philips, 59, of Church Street, in Greeneville, was traveling south on Highway 321 on Tuesday, Feb. 2, in a 1995 Buick LCF when a deer allegedly jumped into the path of his vehicle, striking the front end of his Buick, causing moderate damage, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

 

POLICE REPORTS

 

Public intoxication arrest

Sherman S. Ownsby, 50, of 428 Rock City Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with public intoxication, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported. Ownsby was arrested at the Newport Laundry Mat at 10:45 p.m.

 

Assault reported

Candyce Corley, 23, of Alena Lane, in Newport, said that on Tuesday, Feb. 2, an acquaintance struck her on the forehead area with her hand, at Walmart, on the Cosby Highway, Sgt. David R. Smith reported.

 

Theft over $500

Sammy Crum, 19, of Jones Circle, in Newport, said two acquaintances visited him at home and stole his debit card, using it at the ATM to withdraw $600, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

 

Violation of probation

Frank Jenkins Jr., 54, of 224 Melton Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with violation of probation, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. He was stopped in the parking lot of Food City East.

 

Arrested for domestic assault, other charge

Joseph R. Jacobs, 30, of 421 Harpers Circle, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Feb. 3, and charged with domestic assault and resisting stop, halt, and frisk, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. Jacobs allegedly admitted in a statement that he hit an acquaintance in the mouth and eye with his hand.
