NEWPORT-The opening night of the
2009-10 Cocke CountyElementary Basketball Tournament was dominated by runaway contests at
CockeCounty High School.
After revising the tournament brackets, the
annual eventopened with two play-in contests featuring the eighth and nine seeds playingeach other
and the second seed against the seventh seed in the girls bracket onopening night for the first time
in the event's recent history.
The brackets were changed to allow for
both No. 1 seedsin the brackets to play on Tuesday night as opposed to the original formattingof the
brackets, which had the top seeds opening their tournament play onThursday, which would have put
them playing on three consecutive nights shouldthe reach the championship game.
In girls play, eight seed Del Rio topped Northwest 36-9and No. 2 seed Edgemont
topped Parrottsville 43-9.
The lone boys contest of the night provided
the closestgame as No. 9 Northwest upset No. 8 Centerview by a 44-43 margin.
Tournament play will resume on Tuesday with threecontests.
In the boys bracket, No. 2 Smoky Mountain will play No. 7Del Rio at 5 p.m. and
No. 1 Parrottsville will play Northwest at 7:30 p.m. Inthe lone girls contest Tuesday, No. 1 Grassy
Fork will play No. 8 Del Rio at6:15 p.m.
Northwest tops Centerview
The opening contest of the
boy's tournament was the bestgame on Monday, as the two teams battled to the wire and each having a
chanceto win in the final possession.
Northwest got the go-ahead basket
with 17 seconds toplay, but Centerview was unable to get a solid look at the basket out of atimeout
on their final possession which sealed the victory for the Patriots.
The
Patriots led the game 18-12 at halftime on thestrength of 10 first half points from Kinsler
Rea.
However, Centerview came storming back to tie the game at29 at the
end of three quarters, with a 17-point period. Ryder Keedwill scored10 of the Falcons' 17 points in
the quarter.
Northwest however prevailed victorious in the final
quarterof play.

No. 2 Edgemont advances
Despite being originally scheduled to play on Tuesday,the second-seed Lady
Panthers were ready to play.
Edgemont led 7-0 at the end of a quarter and
22-5 athalftime over the seventh-seeded Lady Parrotts of Parrottsville.
Sharina Cofield led Edgemont in the first half with sevenpoints and Ashley
Green had six.
The rout continued in the second half, as Edgemont led33-7
at the end of the third on their way to the 43-9 win.
Green scored nine
points in the second half to compileher game-high 15 points.

No. 8 Lady Trojans win easily
The Lady Trojans of Del Rio had little trouble advancingpast the Lady Patriots
of Northwest.
A sloppily played first half saw the Lady Trojans
widentheir 9-0 first quarter lead into a 23-2 advantage at the break. Del Rio'sAutumn Stokely scored
all 13 of her game-high points in the opening 12 minutes.
Del Rio
continued their dominance in the third quarter,leading 32-4 at the end of three quarters, on their
way to the 36-9 win.
