SHERIFF'S REPORTS:

DUI 3rd offense, other charges
Charles R. France, 52, of 540 Overview Road, in Newport, was arrested Jan. 1, and charged with DUI 3rd offense, open container of alcohol, and failure to maintain his lane of travel, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported.

Medication incident
Danita Romano, 52, of English Mountain Road, in Newport, said that on Monday, Jan. 25, after she refilled her medication at Walmart, she and her son went to Morristown, Lt. Rick Laws reported. She said somewhere on the way to Morristown, someone stole her medication, or her son lost it or threw it away out of the car. The medication was for her blood pressure and diabetes. The medicine is valued at $12.

Attempted burglary of church
Pastor Rob Chambers of Reidtown Community Church at 1648 West Highway 25/70, in Newport, said that on Wednesday, Jan. 20, someone tried to pry open three of the church's doors, as well as the fellowship building's door. In addition, someone stole the lock off a storage building on the church's property, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported. Damage to the three church doors is $100; the fellowship building door, $25; and the lock is worth $10.

Handgun reported stolen
Roger Mitchell, 27, of Jessica Way, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Jan. 23, someone stole his Ruger semi-automatic handgun from his bedroom, Lt. Rick Laws reported. The handgun is valued at $130.

Flat tire blamed on vandalism
Joanne Day, 51, of Roy Road, in Cosby, told Deputy Sheriff David Crowder that on Sunday, Jan. 24, she had a flat tire and returned home to find several screws in her driveway near the road. The tire is valued at $25.

TV reported stolen
Jennifer James, 27, of Bullard Drive, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Jan. 23, someone pried open the door to her home and took a Samsung 47-inch TV, which she valued at $1,500. Damage to the door is valued at $500, Deputy Sheriff David Parton reported.

Cans of sardines and beef stew reported stolen
Kenny Hashoo, 32, of the 411 Citgo on West Highway 25/70, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Jan. 23, about 8:50 p.m., a man was caught on video stealing a can of Beach Cliff sardines valued at $1.49, and a can of Dinty Moore beef stew valued at $2.59. Officers found the suspect at the Family Inn Motel on Highway 25/70. The owner of the Citgo did not want to press charges for the theft, but the suspect was arrested on a separate criminal trespass warrant, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

Domestic assault charge and arrest
Donald Moses, 47, of 14912 Statesville Road, in Huntersville, N.C., was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 1:15 a.m. at Coop Road and New Cave Church Road, and charged with domestic assault, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported. The victim was transported to a hospital emergency room for treatment.

Violation of sex offender registry, other charges in separate arrest
Jason Randall Williams, 34, of 506 Paintbrush Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 27, and charged with violation of the sex offender registry, Det. Derrick Woods reported. Williams is a registered sex offender who did not register within seven days before, or seven days after, his birthday on Jan. 5, as required by law to do each year. Williams was also arrested Jan. 25 and charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated criminal trespassing, vandalism, simple possession of marijuana, and possession of Xanax Schedule 4/tampering with evidence, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported. Williams alleged said he had a habit of using about $800 worth of drugs a day and he would use anything he could get a hold of, Fontes wrote in his report. Williams allegedly stole $1,989 worth of items from his family, including a Dale Earnhardt jacket valued at $250, a wood splitter valued at $250, a generator valued at $200, several mechanic's tools ($300), and $150 worth of frozen meat.

Vandalism of mailbox alleged
Allie Frazier, 47, of 1105 Plum Way, in Del Rio, said that on Tuesday, Jan. 26, when leaving for work, he noticed someone had torn down her mailbox. She said it has been torn down several times in recent months, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

Accident on Old Hartford Road
Carson J. Wright, 40, of Hartford, said he was driving a 2008 Hummer H2 SUV on Monday, Jan. 25, headed east on Old Hartford Road when, near Lindsey Gap Road, what appeared to be an old two-ton long truck headed west struck the Hummer on the driver's side. That caused the Hummer to hit an embankment on the right side of Hartford Road and then to flip onto its top. Wright was not injured, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings reported.

Theft of heating and air conditioning unit from church
Jim Loftis of Fellowship Presbyterian Church, at 2331 Early Road, said that some time between Monday, Jan. 25, after 6 p.m., and the next day at 9 a.m., someone stole a heating and air conditioning unit valued at $4,000. The thief also cut the wiring on a second until but did not take it, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. Damage to the second unit was valued at $500.

Theft reported
Charles Shell, 59, of Johnson Street, in Newport, said that sometime after 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, and 7 a.m. the next day, someone stole several items from his unlocked vehicle, including: a 1954 Mickey Mantle baseball card (valued at $1,600), a 1987 Barry Bond card ($1,000), two Jerry West rookie cards ($750), a bag of coins ($900), Z$502 in cash, and several other items that totaled $7,502, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

POLICE REPORTS:

Burglary/vandalism over $1,000
Lori Loveday of Cash Express, at 616 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said that on either Monday, Jan. 25, or the next day, taken from the business were several checks, a digital camera, and $3.50 in change, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported. The thief also apparently cut all phone and Internet lines, destroyed a security camera, and tore through a wall to gain entry. Employee Jennifer Blair said someone went through her desk. She said she was missing a purse with her checkbook and $100 in change. Total value of items and damage is $1,380. Kathryn Vick of the business next door, Merita Bread, discovered on Tuesday, Jan. 26, that phone wires to the business had been cut. She valued the damage at $100.

Harassment and threats
Ota Trotter, 30, of 514 Mineral St., in Newport, sand an offender/suspect drove by her apartment three times on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Trotter said on the third time the person drove by, they shouted to Trotter that she "was a dead -----," Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.

Recovery of stolen vehicle
Lucky Carter contacted the County Dispatch office on Sunday, Jan. 24, asking to speak to an officer about a vehicle he worked on as a mechanic. Carter named an individual, approximately 20 years old, who had brought him a 1995 Ford Ranger. Carter replaced the transmission, and two days later, the suspect asked Carter to replace the engine. The vehicle was towed to Carter's business on both occasions. Carter said he had not heard from the suspect since December and had the vehicle. Central Dispatch ran the vehicle's VIN number and discovered it was reported stolen from Casi Idell and Jeff Campbell in Greene County, on Jan. 5, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Cell phone use blamed for accident
Dovie C. Hall, 29, of 1201 Heather Brook Way, in Newport, said that on Thursday, Jan. 21, she was stopped at a 4-way stop at the south entrance of the Walmart parking lot, traveling from the Newport Town Center Shopping Center. Margaret J. Wilburn, 57, of 685 Overview Way, in Newport, said she was traveling west on an access road of the Walmart parking lot and was making a left turn to Newport Town Center Shopping Center, turned too soon, and struck the left side and front of Hall's vehicle, a 2004 Ford Taurus, that was stopped at a stop sign. Hall and a passenger in her Ford Taurus said Wilburn was using a cell phone while driving a 1999 Dodge Durango SUV at the time of the crash, Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.

Accident in Walmart parking lot
A 1996 Honda Civic owned and driven by Ashley Renee Fox, 27, of North Highway 340, in Parrottsville, collided with a 1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Norma Lacole Shults, 40, of Highway 25E in Newport, on Friday, Jan. 22, at 8:10 a.m.

Vehicle reported stolen
Ricky Banks, 46, of Old Cave Church Road, in Newport, said on Tuesday, Jan. 26, that someone stole his 1999 Subaru Outback, which he left the keys in. The vehicle is white and gray with some front-end damage, and one of the headlights is busted out. It was valued at $1,900, Sgt. Jason Smith reported. In the vehicle were a Pioneer CD player (valued at $200), one Bose amplifier ($200), and two Bose 10-inch speakers ($200).

Burglary/vandalism over $1,000
Police responded to a burglary alarm that went off at 5:10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The back door of Game Stop, at 146 Newport Towne Center, had pry marks and damage to the door. Police noticed someone pried open a door to a vacant business next door (at 142 Newport Towne Center) and knocked a hole in the wall of the business that leads to the bathroom of Game Stop. Store surveillance video showed someone coming through the bathroom and entering the back stock area of Game Stop, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. Nothing was reported stolen. Damage was done to two back doors (valued at $500 each) and two walls of the bathroom (also valued at $500 each), for a total value of $2,000.

Breaking and entering/theft
Nancy Shelton, 67, of 414 North Susong, in Newport, said on Monday, Jan. 25, or the next day, she noticed missing from her 2010 Chevrolet EQ SUV were $20 in loose change and 10 Gospel CD's (valued at $100). She told Sgt. Jason Smith she thought the vehicle may have been unlocked while parked.

Theft of property
Tim McCloud of Rent-A-Center, at 112 Newport Towne Center, said someone rented a bunk bed/futon set on Sept. 16, but had not made payments on it since Dec. 10, Capt. Brad Ball reported. The set was valued at $615 to replace. In addition, others were delinquent on their payments for other rented items, including a Toshiba TV and Sony P3 (valued at $881.60 to replace); another bunk bed set ($579(; and an LG television ($650).

Assault reported
Jon Lane, 36, of Touchdown Way, in Newport, said that on Wednesday, Jan. 27, an acquaintance exchanged words with him and then the acquaintance shoved him and struck him in the head, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. The acquaintance said Lane came into the residence, cussing her and daring her to hit him, so she did.

Handbag apparently stolen at library
Sally Hall, 52, of Old Valley Road, in Sevierville, said she accidentally left her handbag at the Stokely Memorial Library, at 383 East Broadway, in Newport, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, and when she realized that, she returned to the library but the handbag was gone. Items stolen included ID cards, $20 in cash, a checkbook with 15 checks from a Tennessee State Bank account, and the handbag (valued at $10), Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported.

Accident at Eastern Plaza Shopping Center
On Wednesday, Jan. 27, two vehicles were parked legally in parking spaces at Eastern Plaza Shopping Center. Their drivers backed up from their spots and struck each other, Capt. Brad Ball reported. Both vehicles suffered very minor damage, the report stated. One vehicle, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, was driven by Barbara Gayle Miller, 53, of Rankin Road, in Newport. The other vehicle was a 1992 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight driven by John Paul Dunn, 26, of Side Way, in Cosby.

Accident on Epley Road
Eric James Bryant, 51, of Epley Road, in Newport, said he had stopped the 2002 Ford Explorer he was driving on Tuesday, Jan. 19, on Epley Road, for a red light in a turn lane to turn left. When the light turned green, Bryant said he waited for traffic that had the right of way clear before he could make his turn. Lora E. Costner, 36, of English Mountain Road, in Newport, said she had also stopped for the red light in a 2001 Honda Accord she was driving. Costner said when the light turned green, she thought Bryant was starting in traffic. She accelerated and struck the rear of a utility trailer that Bryant was pulling, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Accident on East Broadway
Ella L. McKinney, 42, of Fair Street, in Newport, said she was turning left in a 2002 Ford Windstar on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from East Broadway onto McMahan Avenue when Timotea Cruz, 58, of Hamilton Park, in Irmo, S.C., was traveling in a 2006 Ford west on East Broadway at a high rate of speed. The Windstar and Ford collided. Cruz said she was traveling west on East Broadway. As she approached the intersection of McMahan Avenue, McKinney allegedly turned left onto McMahan Avenue in the path of travel of Cruz. A witness said McKinney turned left onto McMahan Avenue into the path of travel of Cruz, Patrolman Josh Veridal reported.

Accident on Cosby Highway
Stephen Vick Jr., 25, of Sandy Ridge Road, in Dandridge, said he was in a 1997 Nissan Frontier pulling out of Hardees Restaurant's parking lot heading south on Highway 321/Cosby Highway, on Thursday, Jan. 21, when Vick hit the passenger side rear of a 1994 Plymouth Voyager driven by Linda Talley, 62, of Highway 73, in Newport. Talley said she was traveling north on Highway 321/Cosby Highway and got into a turn lane to go to McDonald's restaurant when Vick hit Talley's Voyager in the passenger side rear. Both vehicles suffered "functional damage" over $400, Patrolman Donald E. Coakley reported.

Accident on Hedrick Drive
Caitlin Burchette, 16, of Golf Course Road, in Newport, said she was traveling east on Hedrick Drive in a 2007 Toyota Corolla, on Thursday, Jan. 21, between the intersection of Appalachian Way and a Mobil gas station when she diverted her attention to her cell phone. She struck a 1994 Toyota Corolla driven by Jason Barnette, 31, of Rock City Road, in Newport, in the rear. Barnette said he was slowed in the traffic lane of Hedrick Drive headed east, waiting for traffic to clear, when his vehicle was struck by Burchette's Toyota in the rear, Patrolman Josh Veridal reported.
