Relay for Life organizers hard at work

NEWPORT-Cocke County Relay for Life organizers continuetheir efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society's ongoing battleagainst the disease.

During last Tuesday's team captains' meeting at FirstUnited Methodist Church, several team leaders shared information aboutfundraisers currently underway or in the planning stages.

Dutch Bottoms Baptist Church team members have alreadyraised over $1,000 and plan a movie night on Feb. 27 complete with a hot dogsupper. The event will start at 4 p.m. with a cost of $5.

They also announced an upcoming yard sale on April 9-10in the church's pavilion from 8-5. "We're having it inside so that weatherwon't be a factor," they said.

Cecile Godfrey of the Cocke County Fair Association'steam told the group the second annual Relay for Life Horse Show has beenscheduled for May 8 at 6 p.m.

ConAgra team members are currently sellingcustom-designed chocolate items and bears for Valentine's Day, said teamcaptain Susan Key.

Employees of Amedisys are planning a yard sale in April.

Cocke County Relay for Life's brick sales are alsounderway, said April Baxter.

The custom-made bricks can either honor a living personor memorialize someone who has passed away, according to Baxter. The firstbricks sold will be placed in front of the Cocke County Fairgrounds office in acourtyard. As more bricks are sold, the area will be extended around thebuilding.

Bricks can be purchased by individuals for $40 each.Businesses may buy them for $75 apiece.

Much interest is being expressed in the bra decorationcontest, according to Jennifer Howard-Messer.

Teams are encouraged to decorate a bra, which will be ondisplay at the Relay for Life grand celebration in June. "There is a $5entry fee for each bra," said Messer, "and then people will beallowed to vote for their favorite design at a cost of 50 cents per vote."

"The theme is 'Bling My Bra,'" said Messer, whodisplayed one decorated with sequins, bells, and feathers.

This year's overall theme is "Creating a World withMore Birthdays.

"At the celebration, every campsite will have abirthday theme," said Jennifer Smith-Eisenhower, who chairs this year'sevent. "Some teams have already chosen such themes as cowboys, sports, andfarmers."
