NEWPORT-Members of the Newport Board of Education still
hope to see a school-based clinic in place in the near future.
Meeting Monday evening at Sagebrush Restaurant, board
members were told by Newport Grammar School Health Coordinator Mischelle Black
that discussions with a health system continue in a positive manner.
Such a clinic would include a nurse practicioner.
However, the school nurse, Kathy Ragan, would also remain on the school's
staff.
Black also told the board that Family Living Classes will
be taught to students in grades six and eight in May.
Board members also renewed their current agreement with
Steve Thompson as Director of Schools for the 2010-2011 school year on a motion
by Kim Hux, seconded by Jan Sneed.
The transfer of $1,000 to the Principal's Discretionary
Fund was approved on a motion by Mickey Powers, seconded by Hux. This money
will fund two scholarships for the school's Beta Club trip later in the spring.
Members unanimously approved the second reading of
amendments of two board policies, including 2.403 which governs the disposal of
equipment, and 5.303 which addresses personal and professional leave.
First reading approval was given to amend several board
policies, including 2.500 (deposit of funds), 2.802 (payroll procedures), 2.701
(financial reports and records), 4.200 (curriculum development, 4.204 (summer
school), 4.408 (VCR films, 4.600 (grading system), and 5.110 (compensation guides and
contracts).
Thompson also received board approval to pursue an Energy
Efficient Schools Initiative grant for $16,808.
On a motion by Powers, seconded by Hux, Charlotte Mims
was re-elected board chairman for the 2010-2011 year.
Board members tabled the selection of a vice-chairman
until their next meeting, which will be Feb. 22 at NGS.
Board members unanimously approved the first reading of a
policy to govern the use of NGS's Outdoor Classroom.
According to board member Jan Sneed, the policy was drawn
up by NGS Science Lab Coordinator Amy Hammonds and teachers Rebecca Asbury and
Melanie Coffey.
Guidelines in the policy include the requirement that all
activities must be "cleared and scheduled" with the Science Lab
teacher.
