SHERIFF'S REPORTS:

 

Violation of court order alleged

William Reece, 33, of 705 Day Road, in Cosby, was arrested Sunday, Jan. 17, and charged with violation of a court order/restraining order, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

 

Arrested for failure to appear/capias

Lisa Marie Valentine, 45, of 2089 Highway 160, in Newport, was arrested Monday, Jan. 18, and charged with failure to appear/capias, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported.

 

Assault, other charges in arrest

Julie Root, 26, of 1150 Corn Hollow Road, was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 20, and charged with assault, contempt of court, failure to appear, and capias, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. Root was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by police for theft of gas, in Jefferson County, on Jan. 20.

 

Vehicle hits deer in Bybee

Karen L. Cameron, 23, of 5623 Browning Way, in Russellville, was headed south on Airport Road in Bybee, on Sunday, Jan. 17, at about 6:30 p.m., when a deer ran out of the woods and Cameron hit it with the 2008 Mazda van she was driving, according to a report with the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.

 

Accident in Edgemont School parking lot

James Travis Gorrell, 34, of 111 Brookview Drive, in Newport, said he was sitting in a parking space at Edgemont Elementary School, in a 2007 GMC Yukon van, when Michael David Snapp, 19, of 147 Edward Way, in Newport, was trying to pull in with a 1983 Dodge 3500 pickup truck and struck the GMC van in the rear, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

 

Accident on Industrial Road

Gladys L. Sutton, 55, of Rankin Hill Road, in Newport, was traveling east on Industrial Road at Lehigh Drive, in a 2001 Chevrolet UT SUV, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when a small deer ran into the path of her vehicle. The vehicle sustained damage to the windshield and roof, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

 

Theft reported

William McKeys, 61, of West Highway 25/70, said his home was broken into on Wednesday, Jan. 20, Lt. Richard Caldwell reported. Items taken from the home include two flat screen 52-inch TV's (valued at $1,800) and two VCR's ($200). Damage to the door and wall of the home was estimated at $5,000.

 

Ford Ranger reported stolen

Wade Roberts, 64, of Messer Branch Road, in Hartford, said he went to bed around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and when he awoke around 11:30 p.m., he noticed his 1994 Ford Ranger was missing from his driveway, Deputy Sheriffs Joseph Owings and Thomas Harp reported.

 

Theft reported

Emma Jean Maulder, 40, of Hannon Road, in Newport, said that on Monday, Jan. 18, someone entered her home and stole her daughter's Nintendo game system and eight games, apparently from the living room of the home, Lt. Rick Laws reported. The game system are valued at $185, and the games at $186.

 

POLICE REPORTS

 

Warrants for thefts and forgery lead to arrest

Brandon L. Hall, 27, of 610 River St., in Newport, was arrested at home on Wednesday, Jan. 20, Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported. Hall allegedly had a violation of probation, two warrants of theft under $500, and a warrant for forgery out of General Sessions Court dated from October 2009.

 

Theft over $500

Donna Kaupp, owner of Subway's at 762 Cosby Highway, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, named an employee she suspected had not been putting excess funds into the cash register on the day the suspect works. The money missing on the following days was: Jan. 16 ($160), Jan. 17 ($220), Jan. 18 ($90), and Jan. 19 ($210), Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

 

Theft under $500

John W. Page, 47, of 354 Ruble St., in Newport, told police on Wednesday, Jan. 20, that he let someone in his neighborhood borrow a 4-way lug wrench on Sunday, Jan. 17. Page said when he went to his shed on Jan. 20 to see if the wrench had been returned, he found missing a red tool box (valued at $10), assorted tools ($20), and one set of 3/8 drive sockets in a red plastic case ($20), Patrolman Billy Woody reported.

 

Accident at Walmart parking lot

Melanie Kathleen Smith, 37, of 4315 Scenic Drive, in Gatlinburg, said she was traveling down the main drive at the Walmart parking lot on Cosby Highway, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, parallel to the store front, toward the right main entrance, in a 2002 Ford F-150 pickup truck, when a 1998 Chevrolet Tracker driven by R. L. Green, 67, of 2275 Dark Hollow Road, in Cosby, passed Smith from the opposite direction and struck her Ford in the left rear bumper. Green, however, said the Ford truck struck him in the left rear side of his vehicle, Patrolman Joshua Veridal reported.

 

Theft of services resolved

On Wednesday, Jan. 13, Det. Donna Hopkins contacted Darrell Hall at Newport Utilities in regards to the theft of services by a man on Frog Pond Alley. Hall said the man came and paid for the utilities and showed him a receipt. Newport Utilities said it did not want to pursue the issue any further.

 

Harassment alleged

Josh Wilhoit, 18, of Red Hill Road, said that on Monday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 p.m., an acquaintance he has a no contact order against pulled up behind him while on Broadway, and started spinning his wheels. Wilhoit's manager at Long John Silvers, Brenda Webb, 48, said she was in Wilhoit's vehicle at the time, on the way to a bank, when the acquaintance pulled up in his vehicle behind the Buick with Wilhoit and her in it, and the acquaintance started revving up his engine. The acquaintance told police Wilhoit slammed on his brakes and stopped on Broadway so that the acquaintance's vehicle would run in the back of the Buick, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

 

Robbery alleged

Jennifer Holt, 31, of 180 Smith St., in Newport, said that recently an acquaintance entered her home, assaulted her, and then stole several items from her home, including medication (valued at $280), a cell phone ($400), and a digital camera ($150). The total value of stolen items is $900, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported.

 

Wallet reported lost

Michelle C. Langford, 56, of Senior Way, in Newport, said she accidentally left her wallet at the Dollar General Store on Sunday, Jan. 10. Langford said she returned to the store, but an employee said she had not seen the wallet, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. The wallet had $328 in cash and ID cards, and the wallet is valued at about $50.

 

Hit and run accident

Charlene Crowder Mathews, of Ground Squirrel Road, in Del Rio, said she parked her 1997 Plymouth Voyager on Tuesday, Jan. 19, in the Walmart parking lot for about 25 minutes while she went inside the store to shop. Mathews said she noticed someone had caused damage to the driver's side of her vehicle when she returned to her vehicle. Walmart's video footage showed the owner of a black Ford truck opened the passenger's side door, striking the Plymouth Voyager, and then left the scene, Patrolman William Garber reported.

 

Accident on East Highway 25/70

Randall Scott Faulkner, 36, of 2540 Highway 160, in Newport, said he was traveling west on Friday, Jan. 15, at about 1:50 p.m., in a 2005 GMC Sierra on West Highway 25/70 in the inside lane and had the right of way. Billy Ray Jones, 43, of 419 Odyssey Road, in Del Rio, was apparently attempting to turn left onto "C" Street from the turn lane and pulled his 1991 Ford F-150 pickup truck he was driving in front of Faulkner in his GMC. That caused Faulkner to strike the Ford in the passenger rear side, Patrolman Josh Veridal reported. Jones was cited for no insurance. The Ford suffered "disabling damage" greater than $400 on the right side, near the rear. The GMC suffered "disabling damage" on the right side-far front greater than $400. A passenger in the GMC, Paul Hayes, 70, of 2536 Highway 160, in Newport, was uninjured.

 

Hit and run accident on East Broadway

Billy Ball, 69, of 1224 Piney Mt. Road, in Newport, said he was traveling east in a 2008 Ford Ranger, on Highway 25/70 at Mims Avenue, on Friday, Jan. 15, when a vehicle in front of him stopped. Ball' Ford hit the vehicle in the rear side. The driver of the other vehicle allegedly got out of his vehicle, said he had no damage, and left the scene. An officer spoke to Ball at the Newport Police Department, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

 

One-car accident on North Street

Angela Alline Cogdill, 25, of 3059 Highway 411, in Dandridge, said she was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier north on North Street, on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 3:20 p.m., at 266 North St., and fell asleep while driving. A witness said Cogdill was driving north on North Street, crossed the center line, and struck a utility pole, an embankment, and hand rails to steps, as well as a retainer wall in front of Chiropractic Center of Cocke County, on North Street, Patrolman Josh D. Veridal reported.
