SHERIFF'S REPORTS:
Accident on Dark Hollow Road
Michael D. Messer, 43, of 1863 Joyce Way, in Newport,
said he was traveling east on Dark Hollow Road, at Little Hollow Road, on
Monday, Jan. 11, in a 1992 Dodge van when a dog crossed into his path and Messer
swerved to avoid hitting it. Messer reportedly went off Dark Hollow Road on the
left, overcorrected, and flipped several times before coming to a rest on all
four wheels. Messer's van reportedly hit two rows of mailboxes, a wagon wheel
post, and damaged the yard at 2211 Dark Hollow Road, Deputy Sheriff Robert
Thornton reported. Messer was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital of
Cocke County and then released, according to a hospital spokesperson. The
accident occurred around 4:30 p.m.
Accident during snowstorm
Amy L. Wilson, 27, of Wonder Way, in Newport, said on
Monday, Jan. 11, that on Friday, Jan. 8, she was on Paintbrush Way and backed
up her 2005 Nissan Altima, hitting a concrete post and damaging her vehicle,
Lt. Richard Caldwell reported.
Aggravated domestic assault, other charges
William Norton, 39, of 320 Guinn Road, in Greeneville,
was arrested this morning (Tuesday, Jan. 12) at 2 a.m. and charged with
aggravated domestic assault and two counts of reckless endangerment. Norton was
arrested at the Walmart parking lot, Lt. Richard Caldwell reported.
Theft of property
Donny Oglesby, 691 Hale Brook Road, Newport, reported the
theft of $240 in cash from his residence to Deputy C. J. Ball on Sunday.
Aggravated burglary
James Larry McCarter, 63, 121 Edwards Way, Newport, told
Deputy David Crowder on Saturday that sometime between January 6-9, someone
broke into his home and storage building and stole several items, turned over
his television set, and broke a mirror off his 1987 Mercury Cougar.
Slick spot causes accident
Susan F. Abel, 44 Kent Lane, Douglasville, Ga., lost
control of her 2002 Honda Accord on Early Road on Saturday and the vehicle slid
into a power pole, according to Deputy David Crowder.
Weather-related accident
Russell K. Brown, 52, 1140 Morrell Springs Road, Newport,
lost control of his 1999 Toyota on Sunday while driving on Tobe's Creek Road
near its intersection with Waterville Road. According to Deputy Brian Holt,
snow and ice were to blame for the accident, which caused Brown's vehicle to
slide into a tree.
More weather woes
On Saturday, Justin D. Smith, 18, 180 Ground Squirrel
Road, Del Rio, driving a 1997 Nissan owned by Lester Smith, same address, and
Margaret Willis, 60, 1954 Spicewood Flats Road, Del Rio, operating a 2004
Honda, slid into one another as their vehicles tried to negotiate an icy curve
on Spicewood Flats Road in Del Rio.
Property damage reported
On Saturday, Deputy Brian Holt responded to a report of
property damage at Salem Lutheran Church, 3001 Salem Road, Parrottsville. Upon
Holt's arrival, he was told by Jeff LaFollette that sometime between Jan. 7-8,
someone lost control of a vehicle and traveled into the church yard, damaging
several shrubs and a metal handrail. The vehicle had then left the scene.
Auto break-in and theft over $500
Brittany Coakley, 19, 146 Lucky Way, Del Rio, reported
the burglary of her 1994 Honda Accord to Deputy Jason Oury on Saturday.
According to Oury, Coakley said that while the vehicle was parked elsewhere,
someone broke into it by prying open the front doors, damaging them
considerably. Missing items include the passenger side airbag, a Panasonic CD
player, two 12-inch Pioneer speakers, two 6x9 speakers, a CD case containing
150 CD's, and a speaker amp. Total value of the missing items is $1250, while
damage to the vehicle is estimated at $800.
Truck reported stolen
On Friday, Jan. 8, Constable Nathan White answered a call
regarding a stolen vehicle. According to White, Larry D. Bailey, 29, 245
Gilbert St., Parrottsville, said that someone had stolen his 1994 Chevrolet
truck from 1618 Allen's Chapel Road, Parrottsville. The vehicle was later
discovered on Clear Creek Road at the entrance to Edenwood Estates.
POLICE REPORTS
Violation of probation
Justin D. Osborne, 20, of 126 Mulberry St., in Newport,
was arrested this morning (Tuesday, Jan. 12) at 1:30 a.m. at the intersection
of Temple Street and Runnion Street in Newport, and charged with violation of
probation, according to arresting officers Patrolman Matthew Elliott and
Patrolman Billy Woody.
Theft over $1,000
Lenny Johnson, 45, said on Monday, Jan. 11, that an
acquaintance stole several items from his residence at 320 Alex St., in
Newport, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. The acquaintance allegedly took
$500 from a safe, 43 PlayStation 2 and 3 games (valued at $1,000), a Blackberry
phone (valued at $400), and a bank checkbook, for a total of $1,900.
Theft over $500
Susan Grooms, 43, of 611 Honeybee Lane, in Newport, said
on Monday, Jan. 11, that between Monday, Jan. 4 and Wednesday, Jan. 6, an
acquaintance stole a diamond ring (valued at $500). Grooms said she also
discovered a Works electric blower of hers (valued at $100) had been pawned at
C & C Pawn. Grooms said the blower had been missing since the first week of
December, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported. In addition, Destry Young, 41, of
the same address, also said that between Monday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 9,
someone stole his Xbox 360 Arcade (valued at $300), Modern Warfare 2 game
($60), medication ($140), and 12 rounds of .40 caliber ($17). Young named the
same suspect that Grooms did. Young also said the acquaintance went to C &
C Pawn and pawned the Xbox 360. He said items had been disappearing from the
residence over the last few months.
Parking lot mishap
On Saturday, as Rachael E. Stewart, 30, 380 N. Susong
St., Newport, attempted to back her 2007 Pontiac from a parking spot in the
Wal-Mart parking lot, Wendy Jo Colbert, 42, 1302 Youngblood Way, Cosby, tried
to back her 2006 Mercury from the adjacent slot. According to Patrolman William
Garber, in doing so, Colbert's vehicle struck the rear passenger side of
Stewart's Pontiac.
Vandalism of auto
Tammy Turner, 32, 143-A Northside Way, Newport, reported
her 1994 Jeep entered on Saturday to Patrolman Matt Franklin. According to
Franklin's report, Turner said that she heard dogs barking, looked and saw the
light in her vehicle on, and then discovered the attempted burglary. Damage to
the vehicle's CD player is estimated at $200.
Funny money
Shawn Walker, an employee of Mapco, 250 W. Broadway,
Newport, told Patrolman William Garber on Sunday that a customer's payment for
$30.01 in gasoline included a counterfeit $10 bill.
Theft reported
Heather Loveday, 29, 420 Appalachian Way, Newport, told
Sgt. David Smith on Sunday that she had allowed a homeless female to stay for
"a couple of days" with her. After the two had a disagreement,
Loveday told Smith, she told the person to leave, then discovered three money
orders with a total value of $272 and various medications missing.
Residence burglarized
Gary Miller, 58, 234 Gregg's Lane, Newport, reported the
burglary of his home to Capt. Scott Lamb on Saturday. According to Lamb, Miller
discovered the burglary when he returned home. Missing items include a shotgun,
jars of assorted change, and a semi-automatic handgun.
Two-vehicle mishap
On Saturday, as Lena M. Robinson, 22, 508 North St.,
Newport, attempted to back her 2000 Honda in the driveway of Allison B. Lovell,
558 Netherton Drive, Newport, her vehicle hit a 2006 Mazda owned by Lovell,
according to Patrolman Matt Franklin.
