Property damage reported
Dean Black, 402 Beech St., told Patrolman Travis Gorrell
on Tuesday that a tractor-trailer attempting to make a delivery at Newport
Grammar School caught the cable and phone lines to his home. The truck, which
belonged to Estes Express Lines in Greeneville, was driven by Roy R. Brank.
More property damage
Helen Whitlock Sneed, 49, 1214 Fuller St., told Patrolman
William Garber on Christmas Eve that while she was inside Diana's Beauty Salon,
228 E. Broadway, the review mirror on the driver's side of her 2004 Honda
Accord was knocked off by an unknown driver.
Lost billfold
W. E. Cohen, 78, 1120 Autumn Breeze Rd., Newport,
reported his lost billfold to Capt. Ronnie Landers on Wednesday. Cohen told
Landers that before he could cancel his credit cards, someone had used his
Discover card at a local business in the amount of $500.
Charges filed
Vanessa J. Stewart, 49, 112 Lake View Street, was cited
by Patrolman Robby McMahan on Wednesday for violation of the light law and
driving on a revoked license. The charges came after Stewart's 1989 Nissan was
found abandoned at the intersection of Bailey Street and Hedrick Drive.
Parking lot mishaps reported
Newport Police Department personnel answered at least
three calls to parking lot mishaps recently. On Monday, Sgt. David Smith
responded to a call to Wal-Mart parking lot. According to his report, Patrick
E. McFalls, 1501 Fancy Way, Newport, was driving his 2002 Ford Explorer through
the lot when Linda Marlene Stuart, 47, 201 Circle Road, Newport, attempted to
back her 2003 Dodge Caravan from its space and struck his vehicle. On Tuesday,
Patrol Officer Amy Elswick answered a call to Ryan's parking lot, where Candy
Wilson, 51, 1232 Sandstone Lane, Dandridge, said that while she was inside the
restaurant, someone told her that her 2000 Ford F-250. Investigation showed
that a 2004 Chevrolet, driven by Becky Chiasson, 25, 1327 Bright Start Rd., was
parked next to Wilson's vehicle and struck it as she attempted to pull from the
spot. And on Tuesday, Patrolman William Garber answered another call to
Wal-Mart parking lot. When he arrived Deborah Kay Daniels, 54, 10 Crossings
Lane, Hot Springs, NC, said that while she sat in her 2000 Mazda, Susan Woody
Webb, 48, 423 Old Knoxville Hwy., Newport, attempted to remove a shopping cart
from a grassy area and struck her van, causing a crack in the rear tail light.
Webb told Garber that she did not cause the damage to the light.
Charges placed
Joshua Rowland, 23, 1004 Cocke Estates, Newport, was
charged by Newport Police Dept. Detective Lynn Shults with three counts of
forgery and one count of theft of property on Tuesday.
SHERIFF
Theft reported
Jacob George Formberg, 333 Cove Hollow Road, reported the
burglary of his home to Constable Mike Shropshire on Christmas Eve. According
to Shropshire's report, Formberg returned home to find a door open to his home
and several items taken. They included a Craftsman circular saw, an Hitachi
saw, an Hitachi belt sander, a hand planer, a cordless Devault hammer, a Dewalt
palm sander, guns, a computer, and a bag of assorted tools with a combined
estimated value of $3740.
Assault on Tuesday
Dustin Wayne Rankins, 21, 605 Carmack Road, told
Constable Danny Hartsell on Tuesday that while he was working out at a local
fitness center he was assault by a male who then drove away in a black car.
Brake problems
Two teenagers escaped injury Wednesday when their car
left Country Path, traveled down an embankment, and struck a garage. The
driver, John E. Atkins, 16, 129 Country Path, told Deputy Derrick Webb that the
1989 Mazda had brake problems. His passenger was Isidro Cabrera, 15, Loftus
Road, Parrottsville.
Overcorrection
A one-vehicle accident was reported on Wednesday on Hwy.
73, according to Deputy Randall Hartsell. His report states that a 2000 Ford
Explorer, operated by Ethel Diane Messer, 61, 934 Chicken Hollow Road, Newport,
left the right side of the road. When Messer overcorrected, the vehicle then
flipped several times, hit a ditch, and then came to rest on an embankment.
Allied Ambulance personnel checked the driver, who refused further medical
treatment at the time.
Borrowed vehicle not returned
Bobby Stokely, 65, 636 Hwy. 25-E, told Sgt. David Crum on
Tuesday that he loaned his 1999 Chevrolet truck to a family member "three
or four" months ago and that the vehicle has not been returned.
Aggravated burglary
Tony Earl James, 58, 121 Greystone Way, Newport, reported
the burglary of a residence he is remodeling at 609 Pecan Tree Way, Newport, to
Sgt. Eric Rinehart on Tuesday. According to Sgt. Rinehart, missing items
include a band saw and a weedeater.
Jewelry gone
Ashley Shelton, 45, 464 Lower Bogard Road, told Sgt.
Ricky Holt on Tuesday that while she was away from her home someone took
several items of jewelry from the residence. There was no sign of forced
entrance. There is a suspect in the theft.
Shooting reported
Deputy David Crowder responded to a reported shooting on
Tuesday. According to Sgt. Crowder, he went to the residence of Kristy Suzann
Miller, 33, 826 Middle Creek Road, Cosby. Upon his arrival, Miller told him
that during the night a large noise awakened her and her boyfriend. The next
morning, the two discovered the front porch light bulb had been broken and that
one or more apparent shotgun blasts had struck the front of the home.
Stewart charged
Timothy Stewart, 20, 839 Jersey Way, Dandridge, was
charged with violation of probation by Detective Bryan Murr on Tuesday.
VOP charge
Ashley Player, 22, 866 Baysinger Road, Newport, was
charged with violation of probation by Deputy Travis Webb on Tuesday.
Misses truck but hits tree
Edith M. Koger, 68, 1240 Sprouse Road, Newport, told
Deputy Timothy N. Snapp on Tuesday that as she drove her 1999 Nissan up a hill
on Sprouse Road, she met a back truck and swerved to avoid a collision with it.
In doing so, Koger's vehicle collided with a tree. The truck reportedly left
the scene of the accident.
