SHERIFF'S REPORTS

Accident on Highway East 25/70
Gary K. Elkins, 50, of 2196 Carmichael Road, in White Pine, said he was driving east on Highway East 25/70, at Hudson Way, on Wednesday, Dec. 16, in a 1993 Ford LXE, when the vehicle traveling directly in front of him came to a sudden stop. Elkins stated that he knew he could not stop in time to avoid crashing into the stopped vehicle so he drove off the right side of the road to avoid a collision, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported. The Ford struck and damaged a BellSouth telephone router after it traveled off the road. The vehicle did not sustain any visible damage.

Aggravated burglary/theft over $1,000
Sharon Barker, 56, of North Highway 340, in Parrottsville, said that on Wednesday, Dec. 16, about $8,000 in items were stolen from her residence, as well as damage to the rear door of her residence. The stolen jewelry included a gold 1971 Cocke County High School class ring (valued at $500), a 1970 Chuckey-Doak white gold class ring ($500), a string of pearls from the Philippines ($1,500), a gold waterfall diamond ring ($800), a gold star-shaped diamond ring ($850), and several other pieces of jewelry. Back door damage was estimated at $1,000, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.

Dog bite
A 15-year-old on Branch Drive said that on Tuesday, Dec. 12, a black pit bull came out to the road and bit him, Lt. Richard Caldwell reported.

Snow-laden branch blamed for damage to vehicle
Carol Ann McIntyre, 44, of Camellia Road, in Newport, said that on Friday, Dec. 18, at about 7:45 p.m., she was traveling south on Highway 25E when a branch weighed down by snow fell from a tree and landed on her 1998 Dodge Durango she was driving, causing damage to the top of the vehicle, windshield, and driver's side front fender, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Theft reported/four-wheeler recovered
Curtis Ledford, 48, of South Highway 107, in Del Rio, said someone stole a four-wheeler belonging to his son, on Dec. 3, which he valued at $500. The four-wheeler was subsequently recovered by the Greene County Sheriff's Department, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

Billfold reported stolen
Jim Plummer, 50, of Sheila Drive, in Newport, said that on Sunday, Dec. 20, someone stole his billfold, which had $219 in cash in it, plus several ID cards, Lt. Richard Caldwell reported.

Accident on Upper Road in Parrottsville
Rebecca Trent, 31, of 1250 Sprouse Road, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Dec. 19, at about 6:30 p.m., she turned into her driveway in front of the barn, hit the brakes and slid through a fence, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings reported. Damage to the fence was estimated at $15.

DUI 3rd offense and other charges
Robbie Lee Evans, 30, was arrested Monday, Dec. 21, and charged with a DUI 3rd offense, felony fleeing to evade, reckless endangerment, driving on a revoked license 5th offense, vehicle implied consent, and possession of drug paraphernalia, Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported.

Possession of drug paraphernalia
Sherry Michelle Jackson, 35, of 820 McGaha Chapel Road, in Cosby, was arrested Monday, Dec. 21, and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, Sgt. Ricky Holt reported.

Accident on East Highway 25/70
Burlin Davis, 83, of McIntyre Road, in Morrow, Ohio, said he was going west on Highway 25/70, on Saturday, Dec. 19, in a 1997 Red pickup truck, when a 2007 Dodge SQ1 driven by David Lee Brumblough, 41, of Cookeville Boat Dock, in Baxers, Tenn., was on his side of the road and the two vehicles made contact. Brumblough, however, said he was going east on Highway 25/70 when he was on Wolf Creek Bridge. He said the Ford was on the yellow line and struck his driver's side mirror, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

Accident on Morrell Springs Road at Cosby Cutoff Road
Tyler R. Wallace, 18, of 1083 CH Rankin Road, in White Pine, was traveling west on Morrell Springs Road at the Cosby Cutoff Road, on Sunday, Dec. 20, and slowed for a stop sign when a 2007 Chevy Tahoe was making a left turn onto Morrell Springs Road. Wallace, driving a 2003 Ford Mustang, said Grimes made his turn in his Chevy too short, hitting the Ford Mustang. Grimes said he was making a turn onto Morrell Springs Road, when he stated he thought the Mustang was stopped, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Accident on North Highway 340
Jacob B., Bible Jr., 49, of North Highway 340, in Parrottsville, said he was traveling north on Highway 340, on Saturday, Dec. 19, at about 8:30 a.m., in a 1998 Ford F150 pickup truck, and the road was covered with snow and ice. The vehicle left the road to the right and went down an embankment into a creek, causing damage to the vehicle. Bible went to the Sheriff's Department to file a report, Sgt. David Crum reported.

Accident on Hooper Highway
Jonathan C. McCarter, 21, of Huff Road, in Cosby, said he was traveling north on Hooper Highway, in a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck, on Saturday, Dec. 19, at about 11:15 a.m., when he hit some snow and ice on the road, causing him to lose control of the vehicle which came to a final stop in a ditch, Sgt. David Crum reported.

Break-in of Trinity Baptist Church
Pastor Kenny Loyd of Trinity Baptist Church said that sometime between Thursday night, Dec. 17, and Saturday, Dec. 19, someone entered the church and knocked a whole in a wall to gain entry to the church. Several doors inside the church were damaged, as well. Several items were stolen, and some rooms were vandalized. Reported stolen were two CD players (total value of $400), a keyboard ($500), a P.C.S. computer ($700), six door jams ($350), and $15 in cash. Damage to a wall was estimated at $150, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Stolen vehicle recovered
Robert Reiser, 57, of Smokey Hollow Road, in Del Rio, said he parked his 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse on Thursday, Dec. 17, at night, at his home, and when he awoke the next morning, on Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. he discovered his vehicle was gone. Deputy Tony Bailey reported that he later located the vehicle at Newport Tire Center. Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury had the vehicle towed to Newport Tire Center and put a hold on it. The vehicle is valued at $4,900.

Vandalism of wood stove
Cynthia Shults, 57, of Bogard Road, said a suspect walked in through the front door on Saturday, Dec. 19, and said a wood stove in the residence belonged to him. When Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey arrived on the scene, the stove had been dragged out the front door and was in the front yard. The stove is valued at $300.



POLICE REPORTS



Charged with DUI 1st offense and speeding
Matthew A. Belda, 37, of 680 Hale Brook Road, in Newport, was arrested Monday, Dec. 21, at 11 p.m., and charged with speeding and DUI 1st offense, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

Three theft charges in arrest
Brittney L. Shopley, 25, of 188 Lindsey Lane, in Newport, was arrested and charged with theft under $500 (two counts) and theft over $1,000. Shipley allegedly used a credit card belonging to Holly Johnson, at Walmart, on Oct. 18.

Violation of probation
Whitney L. Fox, 22, of 315 Woodlawn Av., was arrested and charged with violation of probation. The violation was issued on Nov. 18, Patrolman Billy Woody reported.

Vandalism of truck at Cosby Highway Service Center
Robert Caughron, owner of Cosby Highway Service Center, at 115 Old Cave Church Road, in Newport, named a person he said he caught siphoning gas from a truck's gas tank at his business, on Monday, Dec. 21. Caughron said he would have to replace the gas tank on the truck that the person damaged before Caughron could return it to its owner, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

Breaking and entering
Libby Humphrey, 42, of Old Cave Church Hill Road, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Dec. 19, at about 3:50 p.m., she caught someone in the act of stealing from her home. The suspect fled. Nothing was taken. A broken door lock and door frame are estimated at $50, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

Theft under $500
An employee at Murphy USA, at 1075 Cosby Highway, said on Sunday, Dec. 20, that he had a gas drive-off. The suspect allegedly pulled up to a gas pump, pumped $20 worth of gas, and drove off without paying for it, according to a report with the Newport Police Department.

Breaking and entering/theft
Rae Gibson, 38, of 460 Terrace Apartments, in Newport. Said after she was gone Friday, Dec. 18, and returned the next day, she found a window open, mud on the floor, and Christmas gifts taken from her son's room: a Matchbox car set (valued at $10), Barbie dolls ($15), and miscellaneous toys ($30), Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

Theft under $500
David C. Livingston, 29, of Crossfield Way, in Bybee, said he was at the City Bar at about 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, left his coat on the bar, went to the bathroom, and returned to find the suspect taking 120 pills out of his coat (valued at $100). The suspect then ran outside, got in a blue van, and fled, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Breaking and entering reported
A window was broken and a computer damaged, sometime between Saturday, Dec. 19, and Monday, Dec. 21. The computer is valued at $600. It happened at the TVA lab at Cocke County High School, at 216 Hedrick Drive, Sgt. David R. Smith reported. Nothing was stolen.

Vandalism reported
Roger Ellison, 59, of Masters Circle, heard glass in his back door storm door was shattered, on Saturday, Dec. 19, at about 1 to 1:15 p.m. Police believe a BB did the damage and recovered it at the scene. The door's glass is valued at $100, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported.

Stolen license plate
Angie McNabb, 42, of Mountain View Street, in Newport, said on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 10 p.m., she noticed that a license plate on her 1992 Oldsmobile, valued at $25, had been stolen, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

Unruly juvenile
Police were called to a residence on Mt. View Street, on Dec. 8. A woman there said she had grounded her son, who was 16, from driving his vehicle. He did not have a license or insurance, she said. Then the woman's mother allegedly came to her house and helped the 16-year-old leave in his truck, without his mother's permission, Patrolman Allen Stump reported.

Theft of medication
Joshua Burgin, 29, said he went to a friend's house on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. When he arrived home three hours later, he called his friend who said he had found Burgin's medication. Burgin said he went to his friend's house to get the medication, but it was not there anymore. The medicine is valued at $150, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Accident at Walmart parking lot.
William H. Justus, 50, of 539 Aspen Road, in Newport, said he was in front of Walmart on Monday, Dec. 21, and had his vehicle in reverse. His car then rolled back into a 1990 Subaru Legacy, causing minor damage. Rachel Raines, of Hartford Road, in Cosby, said she had just pulled from aisle number 6 in behind the Taurus when he rolled back into the front of her vehicle, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Hit and run at Walmart parking lot
Marjorie Anne Herndon said she parked her 1996 Ford Explorer on the grocery side of Walmart, in a handicapped parking space, on Saturday, Dec. 19, and went inside to shop, between 6:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. She said when she returned, she noticed damage to the rear driver side quarter panel and rear bumper, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.
