SHERIFF'S REPORTS:
Violation of probation charge and arrest Johnny G. Adams, 27, of 1900 Vince Lane, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Dec. 8, and charged with violation of probation. Adams was on probation for a term of two years for a conviction of introduction of contraband into a penal institution, Det. Bryan Murr reported.
Aggravated burglary/theft/vandalism Clifton Grooms, 62, of Old Asheville Highway, in Newport, said someone broke into his home and stole a can with approximately $300 in it. Damage to a window was estimated at $150, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Vehicle Theft James Larry McCarter, 63, of Edwards Way, in Newport, said on Monday, Dec. 7, that sometime between 5 p.m. on Dec. 1 and 11 p.m. on Dec. 4, someone stole his 1995 GMC pickup truck, while he was away. McCarter said the vehicle had been parked in his carport at his home before it was stolen. The maroon truck with an eagle tag on the front bumper was valued at $6,000, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.
Vehicle broken into Jacqueline Coggins, 20, of Overlook Way, said she returned home from a hospital on Saturday, Dec. 5, and discovered her vehicle had been broken into, according to a report in the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. She said a thief took her LG Shine cell phone, valued at $100, and a debit card she valued at $260.
Break-in reported Diane Hembree, 51, of Old Edwina Road, said someone broke into her home on Monday, Dec. 7, and stole items worth $13,139, including a lot of jewelry and paperwork with her social security number and bank account information, Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb reported.
Theft of commercial truck alleged An employee of Powser Truck Leasing, located at 877 West Highway 25/70, in Newport, said she leased a 2009 GMC 16-foot cube truck to an individual on Tuesday, Nov. 24, to move some items to a storage area. The truck, due back the next day, was never returned. A letter from the truck leasing company was sent to the individual, and several attempts were made to contact the individual who leased the truck, without success. Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported that the truck's estimated value was approximately $40,000.
Rain blamed for accident Angela Crowder, 34, of Upper Broad Street, in Newport, was headed east on Industrial Road in a 2006 Hummer H3 SUV, near France Road, on Saturday, Dec. 5, when, while negotiating a curve, the wet road allegedly caused her to slide off Industrial Road and down an embankment, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.
Head-on collision on Carson Springs Road James W. Chesteen, 15, of 1692 Deerwood Road, in Newport, was traveling south on Carson Springs Road in a 1997 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck, on Saturday, Dec. 5, when the driver stated the vehicle began to slide. The road was white with snow when Chesteen started around a graded curve and slid into the northbound lane. George S. Lundy, 63, of Driskill Circle, in Newport, was driving a 1986 Nissan pickup truck and attempted to avoid a collision, and was as far right on the road as possible. However, Chesteen could not stop the Chevrolet he was driving, resulting in a head-on collision, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.
Accident on Big Creek Road Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings was dispatched on Sunday, Dec. 6, to a wreck on Big Creek Road at Grindstaff Road. Sara E. Gorrell, 22, of Skyhigh Drive, in Newport, was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla, headed south on Big Creek Road, when she reportedly saw a truck coming in the opposition direction and into her lane. She said she swerved to miss the truck and went off the right side of the road, striking a bridge rail. Gorrell was transported by Allied EMS to a hospital.
Accident on Armory Road Kimberly D. Farmer, 31, of 524 Drakewood Road, in Knoxville, said that on Sunday, Dec. 6, she was entering Armory Road from a private drive, in a 2001 Dodge pickup truck, when she apparently got too far out in the road, striking a 2002 Nissan Maxima driven by Danielle M. Dunn, 25, of 1896 Lower English Creek, in Cosby, that was traveling south on Armory Road, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.
Several drug charges in arrest Jason Elbert Harris, 29, of 3419 Dedra St., in Morristown, was arrested Monday, Dec. 7, and charged with conspiracy to sell 300 pounds of Schedule VI, conspiracy to deliver 300 pounds of Schedule VI, 19 counts of the sale of Schedule VI drugs, and 19 counts of the delivery of Schedule VI drugs, Dept. Bryan Murr reported. Harris was arrested on a capias issued from Cocke County Circuit Court following grand jury testimony for the above-listed charges.
Charge of theft under $500 and arrest Wilson Roy Ham, 36, of 508 Sorghum Way, in Newport, was arrested Monday, Dec. 7, and charged with theft under $500, Det. Bryan Murr reported. Ham was charged with the theft of lumber owned by Douglas Black. Black reported the theft of his lumber on Nov. 21. He valued the loss at $84.
Phone harassment alleged Judy Hurley, 64, of Allens Chapel Road, said on Saturday, Dec. 5, that an acquaintance had been calling her for two or three weeks, harassing her by phone. She said the person is not allowed on her property. She also stated that she is afraid of the person, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.
Vandalism reported Tonya Miller, 38, of West Highway 25/70, said that on Sunday, Dec. 6, the window in room 129 at Family Inns West was broken out. A witness said a suspect had been wrestling with friends and accidentally broke the window, which he agreed to pay for, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. The window was valued at $200.
Assault alleged Melanie Sith, 37, of Ball Hollow Road, in Cosby, said that she was outside Buddy's Bar on Chavis Road, on Monday, Dec. 7, at about 11:20 p.m., when she and an acquaintance got into an argument. The person allegedly pushed Smith to the ground and then kicked her seven or eight times. He also grabbed Smith by the throat and said he would kill her and no one could stop him, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported.
Armed robbery Martin L. Taylor, 76, of English Mountain Road, in Newport, said an acquaintance came to his home on Saturday, Dec. 5, and robbed him at gunpoint, Sgt. Armando Fontes reported. The acquaintance went to Taylor's bedroom and took $22 from his wallet, and then left.
Assault on a minor A 15-year-old involved in a vehicle accident on Carson Springs Road said after the accident a male walked to the accident scene, grabbed a cane, and came towards the teenager, punched him in the face, and walked back up the road, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.
Harassment alleged Scott Walker, 22, of Blue Mill Road, said an acquaintance pulled out behind him as he was driving home and started to chase him. Later, the acquaintance allegedly blocked a road, forcing Walker to go off the road and drive through a mud hole to get around the person, Deputy Sheriff Josh Hall reported.
Child custody dispute The mother of a 10-month-old baby said the child's father would not give her the baby. Officers determined the two were the child's biological parents, but neither party had custody papers or any documentation concerning visitation. Officers allowed the child to stay with his father since he had been with him since 10:30 a.m. on the same day. Sgt. Armando Fontes wrote that officers had no reason to believe the child was in any danger by staying with the father. The child's grandparents were at the residence with the father.
POLICE REPORTS
DUI, no insurance charges and arrest Jimmy Bice, 25, of 154 Cheyenne Circle, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Dec. 9, and charged with DUI and no insurance, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Theft under $500 At Walmart, on Wednesday, Dec. 9, employee Shane Bowery reported that a man brought a red Chevrolet two-door Cobalt into the store, got a $30 oil change, and left without paying, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.
Vandalism reported Matthew Bridges, 26, of 2325 Blackbird Lane, in Newport, said his 1994 Ford Thunderbird had two right tires that had been slashed. He named two suspects. Damage to the two Yokahama tires was estimated at $442, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported.
Trespasser at Tanner building arrested William Lamar Jones, 32, of 680 Johns Creek Road, in Del Rio, was arrested on Tuesday, Dec. 8, for criminal trespass on the premises of the Tanner Cultural Building, in the early morning hours. Officers responded to a call of someone inside the building after hours, at 7 p.m. Patrolman Matt Franklin reported that he and Capt. Scott Lamb took Jones to the ground with the help of two other officers after he struck Franklin in the mouth and grabbed Lamb and hit him in the back of the head several times. Jones was transported and received treatment at Cocke County Baptist Hospital. He was charged with aggravated assault, assault, resisting arrest, and burglary.
Identity theft arrest Lisa M. Barnes, 31, of 209 Brookfield Drive, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Dec. 8, and charged with identity theft under $500 (two times) and identity theft over $500 (two times). Barnes allegedly used her mother's ID to acquire a Verizon cell phone and an AT&T cell phone without her mother's permission, Det. Lynn Shults reported.
Counterfeit currency Chris Smith, 32, of 538 Sheila Drive, in Newport, told officers that on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m., he made a purchase from Lowe's, at 120 Epley Road, in Newport, and received one $5 bill as part of his change from his purchase. He later determined it was counterfeit currency and contacted police, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.
Breaking and entering Charris Rogers, 20, of 711 Melrose Way, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Dec. 5, at about 11:30 a.m., she came out of her home to her 1995 Chevrolet Blazer and discovered her wallet missing from her unlocked car. The wallet had $30 in it, several ID's, and a food stamp card, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Harassment/threats made Heather Loveday, 32, said on Friday, Dec. 4 that an acquaintance approached her and said if she called the law on her again she would "kill her stupid (obscenity)." The acquaintance was arrested Dec. 1 for public intoxication after Loveday said the woman had been beating on her door, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.
Check forgery/theft under $500 Cordelia Holt, 30, of 432 Viewmont Circle, in Newport, said one of two blank checks given to her by her father was written for $50 and cashed on Oct. 30 by an acquaintance of hers without Holt's permission, according to a Newport Police Department report.
Theft under $500 Lisa Price said someone on Saturday, Dec. 5, between 7 and 8 p.m., stole her son's Sony PlayStation, which was valued at $210. It was missing from the back seat of the family's vehicle, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported.
Counterfeit money An employee of World Finance, 307 West Broadway, said Timothy Charles Parker, 27, tried to make a loan payment with a $20 bill that was tested and found to be counterfeit, on Monday, Dec. 7. Parker waited for police to arrive and told them he got the $20 bill from a relative to go and make a loan payment for them. Capt Brad Ball wrote, "Police have no reason to believe that Mr. Parker had knowledge that the bill was counterfeit."
Theft under $500 Sheena Caldwell, store manager of Dollar General store, at 165 Western Plaza Way, in Newport, said on a theft call that she saw on video on Monday, Dec. 7, an employee acting as if ringing up items, but not doing so. The total value of items not charged was about $164, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. District Manager Richard Fisher told officers they suspected it had been happening since Nov. 4. Officers informed Det. Donna Hopkins to investigate further.
Theft of rental property Chad Webb, manager at Aaron's, at 628 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said on Monday, Dec. 7, that two individuals had leased a 60-inch Mitsubishi flat screen TV from Aaron's and had not made payments as required, Patrolman William Garber reported. The individuals told Webb another acquaintance was keeping it for them in storage on Greggs Chapel in Newport. The TV was valued at $1,500.
Vandalism/burglary While on routine patrol on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at about 3:35 a.m., Sgt. Ricky Holt heard an alarm coming from the Town and Country Drug Store on Cosby Highway. Holt discovered a large rock apparently used to break out the front door. The owner of the store said nothing was missing. Damages were valued at $1,000, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.
Vehicle in parking lot damaged Brittany C. Stinnett, 18, of Rankin Hill Road, in Newport, said she returned to her 2003 Saab after she went into Fred's, at 122 Five Rivers Plaza Way, in Newport, around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and that an unknown object had struck the driver's side of her vehicle, doing minor damage, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported.
Accident in parking lot of C & C Pawn Shop Joshua Adam Roland, 24, of Scenic Drive, in Newport, was backing a 2001 Toyota Camry out of a parking space and struck a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser owned by Diane D. Hembree, of Old Edwina Road, in Newport, Sgt. David R. Smith reported.
Theft of property Sherri Hodges, 50, of 1023 Piedmont Road, in New Market, said she let another resident in her home at 231 Woodlawn Ave. and borrow three of her rings. She said she got back two, but one was missing on Monday, Dec. 7. The diamond ring is worth $2,000, she said in a report by Capt. Brad Ball.
Accident in Walmart parking lot John Michael Dorsey, 28, of 347 Prospect Ave., in Newport, on Saturday, Dec. 5, was traveling down a parking lot aisle at Walmart, in a 1996 Honda Accord, got to the end of the aisle, pulled out onto an access road, and struck the side of a 2003 Ford Focus driven by Sarah Frances Haynes, 60, of 1528 Sweet Gum Drive, in Newport, according to a report by Patrolman Heather Lawson. Dorsey was cited for no insurance.
Counterfeit currency Crystal Holt, 22, an employee of Murphy USA gas station, at 1077 Cosby Highway, told Sgt. Jason Smith that on Sunday, Dec. 6, a white male, mid- to upper 20's years of age, with long, shoulder-length brown hair, tried to make a purchase at the gas station with two $10 bills. She marked them and saw they were counterfeit. He paid with other money.
Assault at Freddy's Lounge David Scott Turner, 37, of Irish Cutt Off, in Newport, said he was standing outside Freddy's Lounge on Saturday, Dec. 5, at about 7:45 p.m., talking to a friend when an acquaintance came up and talked about a past incident involving the two men. The acquaintance struck Turner in the right side of his face, causing him to fall, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.
