NEWPORT-Capt. James Holt injured his right hand when
arresting Shawn D. Meeks, 34, of 189 Harbin Road, in Dandridge, on Wednesday,
Holt was treated at a hospital and released with bandages
on his hand, according to a spokesperson with the Newport Police Department.
Meeks was arrested at 653 8th Street, in Newport, and
charged with robbery, failure to appear/capias, resisting stop, halt, frisk,
and escape, Schedule II morphine, Schedule II Percocet, and Schedule II
Percocet intent for sale and delivery, according to a report by the NPD that
listed Holt as the arresting officer.
Police went to the 8th Street residence at about 7:15
p.m. to serve a warrant on Meeks for robbery and capias out of Sessions Court.
The homeowner allegedly gave Holt and three other officers permission to enter.
Meeks was found in the back bedroom of the residence.
When Holt said he had a warrant for his arrest, Meeks
stood up with a needle with some clear fluid in it and stated he was "not
going back to jail."
Meeks then allegedly fought with Holt, Sgt. Terry Lawson,
and patrolmen Matthew Elliott and Robbie McMahan.
Meeks also tried to jump out the bedroom window, was
handcuffed, and patted down, allegedly for the safety of the officers.
Meeks had a medicine bottle in a pants pocket with the
name Steve Blaine on the bottle. It had five morphine (30 mg) pills. Meeks also
allegedly had 30 1/2 count Percocets on him.
While placed in a patrol car, Meeks allegedly took off
running from officers and was captured a short distance on foot on 8th Street.

injury to his hand.
