Sheriff's


Violation of probation arrest
David Scott Turner, 37, of 250 Irish Cut Road, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 13, and charged with violation of probation.

Theft of tools and gun
Crystal Dameron, 27, of Cosby Highway, said that someone stole several items from her garage on Tuesday, Oct. 13, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported. The stolen items included $1,500 worth of Craftsman hand tools, a large welder (valued at $600), a welder ($400), Craftsman drills (a total of $200), and a BB gun ($50).

Aggravated burglary/theft under $500
Anna Bailey, 65, of South Highway 340, in Parrottsville, said that on Tuesday, Oct. 13, someone broke into her home and stole medicine valued at $18 and $5.50 in coins, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.

Theft reported
Robin Ramsey, 38, of East Highway 25/70, in Newport, said that while she was working at the Shack on Tuesday, Oct. 13, someone stole her wallet that was hidden inside the restaurant, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. Ramsey named a suspect. Several cards and $140 in cash were stolen, she said.

Washer and dryer reported stolen
Farrel Golden, of Hooper Highway, in Cosby, said that sometime between Saturday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 13, someone broke into a residence on Hinkle Hill Road and stole a stainless steel front-loading washer and a stainless steel front-loading dryer, each valued at $1,000, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported. A damaged window screen is valued at $100.

Burned vehicle's owner identified
Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported that on Wednesday, Oct. 7, he ran a vehicle identification number (VIN) on a vehicle completely destroyed by fire and found on Sept. 6 by a Smoky Mountain park ranger on South Highway 32, he wrote in a report. The search said that it was a 2006 Toyota Rav 4 registered to Barbara Ogle, of Henry Town Road, in Sevierville.

Burglary reported
Penny Shade Hall, 50, of Bonanza Drive, in Newport, said that on Friday, Oct. 9, someone cut the lock off her storage unit in Parrottsville and replaced it with a combination lock, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported. She said stolen were nine boxes of a crystal set (valued at $1,700), five boxes of crafts ($300), a Christmas tree ($100), Christmas-related items ($200), seven boxes of Halloween-related items ($250), and seven boxes of various items ($500). Hall said she was last at the storage unit about one month previously.

Vehicle with keys left in it reported stolen
Kevin Gregg, 18, of Knoll Drive, said he parked his BMW around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at his home, and when he woke up the next morning, it was gone. He said a wallet he left in the vehicle, which had the keys in it, were stolen, along with a pair of boots ($150). He estimated his loss at $3,000, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported.

Harassment alleged
Nona Weathers, 60, of Five Way, in Newport, said that between December of 2008 and October of 2009, a person she has an order of protection against has harassed her by riding up and down the road near her home, sent her letters, had other people contact her on the person's behalf, and telephoned her, Lt. Rick Laws reported.

Accident on Fowlers Grove Road
George Zakalugin, 23, of 644 Monty Wood Circle, in Pigeon Forge, said that on Friday, Oct. 9, he was driving a 2001 Mercury CL500 on Fowlers Grove Road, near Joe Reed Road, when he ran off the right side of the road and into a ditch, overcorrected, hit a tree, and came to a stop on the vehicle's top, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported. The vehicle suffered severe damage, but Zakalyugin escaped injury.

Vehicle overturned into creek
William R. Burgener, 56, of 1775 Hancock St., in San Diego, was traveling west on Big Creek Road near Black Mountain Road, on Monday, Oct. 12, when he lost control of his 2006 Chrysler C30 on wet pavement and overturned the vehicle in the creek. Burgener was not injured, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

Accident on South Highway 32 leads to arrest
John M. Bowers, 27, of 1310 Spring Valley Lane, in Sylacquga, Al., was arrested Sunday, Oct. 11 and charged with violation of financial responsibility and DUI 1st offense, after an accident on South Highway 32 near Trail Hollow Road, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. Bowers, driving a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck and a 1996 Ford EPR SUV driven by Hollaway S. Giles, 62, of 4221 Cosby Road, in Cosby allegedly sideswiped each other's mirrors while traveling in opposite directions. Both drivers told Webb that Bowers continued north and Giles turned around and followed him. Giles allegedly pulled alongside of Bowers, who allegedly backed up and struck the passenger side of the Ford SUV with the front of the Ford Ranger. As Bowers made a right onto Trail Hollow Road, Giles struck the side of the Ford Ranger with his SUV and pushed it down an embankment into a large tree.

Theft of gas
Jonathan Soliday, 32, of Overlook Way, in Newport, said that someone stole about $6 worth of gas from his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado while it was parked at his residence, on Monday, Oct. 12, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball said.

Aggravated burglary/home invasion
Judy Kirk, 30, of Ed's Way, said that a relative who lives with her and was home sick, saw a young white male kick in the front door to Kirk's home and run out the back, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.

Arrested for aggravated assault and simple assault
Keith A. Cameron, 45, of 262 France Road, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 13, and charged with aggravated assault and simple assault following an incident that occurred on Oct. 3. He turned himself in to officers, Deputy Sheriff C. J. Ball reported.

Arrested for domestic assault
Jason E. Stuart, 29, of 508 Little Holloway, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14, and charged with domestic assault, according to a Cocke County Sheriff's Department report.

Theft under $500
Brandi Roberts, 27, of 199 Clevenger Cutoff, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14, and charged with theft under $500. Roberts was allegedly seen stealing $54.52 in merchandise from CVS, at 346 Cosby Highway, Newport, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

DUI, possession of drugs, paraphernalia
Doyle A. Shelton, 24, of 2188 Stone View Way, in Cosby, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14, and charged with driving under the influence, possessin of Schedule VI (simple possession), possession of Schedule IV, and possession of drug paraphernalia, Patrolman Billy Woody reported. Police allegedly found marijuana on Shelton and in his 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, as well as six white pills in the console of the car.

Accident on Sixth Street
Derek Bryce Ailor, 18, of 1533 Sherwood Drive, in Newport, was injured in a car accident on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported. Ailor was traveling east on Sixth Street at about 6 p.m. when he pulled out from the stop sign and into the path of a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice driven by Travor Andrew Stewart, 25, of 351 Jasmine Drive, in Newporty. Stewart was traveling north on Filbert Street.
                
Four counts of failure to appear
Diane E. Davis, 44, of 253 Moore Hollow Road, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 13, and charged with four counts of failure to appear, out of Circuit Court and Sessions Court, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

Arrested for drug fraud
Robert Busler, of 705 Corral Road, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 13, and charged with drug fraud, Sgt. Jason Smith reported.

Accident on North Highway 321
Gerald T. Palmer, 36, of 119 Harvard Way, in Newport, said he had stopped his 1997 Dodge Caravan on North Street at East Main Street on Wednesday, Oct. 14, when Ray E. Smith Sr., 74, of 1212 Victoria Way, in Newport, reportedly slowed for traffic when his foot slipped off the brake, causing the 1994 Ford F-250 pickup truck he was driving hit the rear end of the Dodge Caravan, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.

Counterfeit $20 bill discovered
Vinson Lane, an employee at the Citgo gas station at 366 West Broadway, in Newport, said a regular customer came into the store on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and asked if Lane would check to see if a $20 bill he had was counterfeit. He said a friend gave it to him, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.

Assault reported
Two boys allegedly threw rocks and walnuts from behind a brush pile at a 13-year-old boy and two of his friends as they were walking home, at the intersection of 8th Street and Ruble Avenue, on Sunday, Oct. 4, Patrolman Justin Vinson reported. The matter was turned over to grammar school administration for punishment and/or discipline.

Backpack retrieved from city park pool
Melissa Maxwell said a girl admitted to a police officer she had thrown a backpack belonging to Dustin James, of Elana Drive, into the city park's pool on Sept. 28, Det. Donna Hopkins reported. The backpack was found in the pool with all its items still in it.

Natural death reported
Hazel R. Thornton, 93, of Cherokee Drive, in Newport, was found deceased at approximately 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, by a relative who said he last talked to her on the previous night at 11 p.m., Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.

Theft of money reported
Flora Stanley, 69, of Lennon Circle, named a suspect who visited her as having taken $500 from her purse on Sunday, Oct. 11, Capt. James Holt reported.

Vandalism reported
Mildred Hale, 68, of Industrial Road, in Newport, said she went to a trailer she owned and had rented out for three years and found a large hole in the living room floor, Lt. Terry Lawson reported. The hole was two feet by two feet, and the front metal door had multiple large dents in the front of it. The floor damage is estimated at $300, and the door damage at $60.

Counterfeit money
Kayla Stuart, of 4th Street, in Newport, said one of two males who came into the Quick Stop Market on West Broadway, on Monday, Oct. 12, used three counterfeit five-dollar bills to pay for items totaling $12.96, including a pack of Marlboro cigarettes for $4.54, and a 12-ounce Bud beer for $6.39, Patrolman Heather Lawson reported. She said she discovered the three bills were counterfeit after the two males had left.

Vandalism reported
Melissa Ramsey, 30, of Morrell Springs Road, in Newport, said someone scratched all four doors on her 2000 Honda Accord on Monday, Oct. 12, while she had it parked at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County, Patrolman Billy Woody reported. The damage is estimated at $2,000.

Counterfeit $1 bill
Jeff Gentry said a man tried to make a purchase from the BP Kenjo Market on the Cosby Highway, in Newport, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 2:50 a.m., with a counterfeit one-dollar bill, Sgt. David Smith reported. The bill was confiscated and placed in evidence.

Theft reported
Charles Williams, of Pleasant Valley Road, said that sometime during the night of Thursday, Oct. 8, someone stole his trailer from the parking lot of Western Plaza, where he had it for sale, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. The trailer is valued at $1,000.
