DEL RIO-Pearl Burgin, her granddaughter Lebrina, and her
19-month-old great-granddaughter, Makaylee, were able to salvage some family
photos and hunting equipment, but little else, in a fire that consumed Burgin's
home on Highway 107, in Del Rio, late at night on Sunday, Oct. 11.
The three were in the home at the time of the blaze and
escaped without injuries.
Lt. Skip Ellison of the Cocke County Volunteer Fire
Department, said this morning that about 30 firefighters from four fire
departments battled the blaze that began around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.
"It was a total loss," said Ellison of the
home, estimated to be about 100 years old.
Ellison said units from Cocke County, Long View, Del Rio,
and Madison, N.C., battled the raging fire for about five hours, successfully
keeping the flames from spreading to other residences next to the home, located
at 704 Highway 107, in Del Rio.
Ellison said when it was over, only a "shell"
of the structure stood.
Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's
Department said that anyone wanting to assist the Burgins may contact Fontes
with donations at 623-6004. Please leave your name and phone number, he wrote
in a report.
