Firearms reported stolen before police arrive
The home of Scott Austin, 38, of Bogard Road, in Newport, was apparently burglarized of two guns and a jar with change on Monday, Oct. 5, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. He wrote that when he arrived, he found the front door of the residence kicked open. Austin showed up "a short time later." Austin said a third-generation heirloom Colt Derringer valued at approximately $600 and a Smith & Wesson pistol valued at $700 were taken before he, a detective, an officer, and Webb arrived, the report stated. The doorframe is valued at $700.

Tractor with front-end loader reported stolen
Dwayne Mason, 60, of South Highway 321, said that sometime during the night of Saturday, Oct. 3, or the morning of the next day, someone stole his tractor with a front-end loader attached to it, from an equipment barn on his property. Tire tracks appeared to show the tractor was loaded on a rollback truck and taken away, Lt. Rick Laws reported. The 2004 Kubota farm tractor model 900 dtf-2004 is valued at $30,000, and a 2004 Bush Hog M446 front-end loader is valued at $5,000.

Pistol, several jewelry items reported stolen
Billy Massey, 40, of Splashway Road, said on Thursday, Oct. 1, that after an acquaintance visited his home two- to three weeks prior, the following were missing: a .22 pistol valued at $426, two wedding bands with one karat valued at $1,800, an emerald ring ($750), three gold wedding bands ($400), and other jewelry, all totaling $5,366, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Errant arrow misses target
James Norman, 65, of 1347 Lower English Creek Road, in Newport, the landlord of a rental property at 1349 Lower English Creek Road, led Sgt. Armando Fontes to the rear of a rental singlewide trailer of his and revealed to the officer an arrow struck in a bathroom wall, on Wednesday, Oct. 7. They removed the arrow and Fontes found some practice targets behind the rental property in close proximity. The owner of the targets identified the arrow as his. The targets had a small hill and tree thicket behind them; the targets were not placed in a careless manner, Fontes noted. The owner, Don Masoner, 37, of 1364 Green Acres Drive, in Newport, said he was target practicing earlier in the day and overshot his target, but could not find his arrow. He was very cooperative and stated he was glad no one got hurt and would contact Norman, the property owner, for restitution, Fontes reported.

Public intoxication charge and arrest
Trula D. Wade, 31, of Early Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7, and charged with public intoxication. She was found passed out in the passenger side of a Subaru Outback driven by Patricia McGaha, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

Accident on Dry Fork Road
Randy Mathis, 47, of 327 Kelley Road, in Del Rio, said he was traveling west in a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette on Dry Fork Road near Highway 107 on Saturday, Oct. 3, at about 1:45 p.m., when a vehicle traveling east bound came into his lane partially while Mathis was negotiating a curve. Mathis said he swerved to the right to avoid a collision, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Vehicle wrecks avoiding collision with deer
Robert K. Kesterson, 54, of 95 Brown Springs Road, in Mosheim, was driving a 1998 Mazda B3000 on Friday, Oct. 2, at about 6:20 p.m. on North Highway 107 when he saw a deer in his path, swerved left to avoid it, went off the road, lost control of the vehicle, which flipped on its side, and struck several trees, Sgt. Ricky Holt reported. Kesterson was uninjured.

Probation violation
James W. Durfee, 34, of 640 Myers Circle, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 6, and charged with violation of probation. He turned himself into the Cocke County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Driving on a revoked license 2nd offense
Corliss M. McAllister, 44, of 111 Greasy Cove Road, in Cosby, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 6, and charged with driving on a revoked license 2nd offense, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Accident on Lincoln Avenue
A 1998 Ford EPR driven by Terry T. Lawson, 40, of 505 Morrell St., in Newport, stopped in the southbound traffic lane on Lincoln Avenue, waiting to turn left onto Morrell Springs Road, on Saturday, Oct. 3, when a 1999 Plymouth IP4 driven by David W. Barger, 61, of 6709 Rex Drive, in Talbott, rear-ended it, causing moderate damage to both vehicles, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported.

Accident on Lower English Creek Road
Evan G. Sanders, 16, of 422 Mint Drive, in Newport, was driving a 1998 Honda Civic headed south on Lower English Creek Road near Ponder Road, on Sept. 20, at about 5:45 p.m., Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported. While negotiating a curve, it was struck by a 2006 Ford pickup truck driven by Valerie A. Philips, 42, of 1326 Applewood Way, in Newport, which apparently was on the southbound side of the road at impact. The road surface was wet due to a prior rainstorm. Sanders, who had a learner's permit and was accompanied by his father in the Honda Civic, was transported to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County for evaluation of a possible injury.

Medication stolen
Richard Dalton, 50, of Greasy Cove Road, in Newport, said someone he knew stole 92 pills from his home on Tuesday, Oct. 6, worth $2.40, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

Harassment alleged
Hubert A. Stewart, 53, of Edgewater Way, in Newport, said someone who lives near by had unfairly harassed him by stating several times over the past 10 months that Stewart was "disturbing the peace". Stewart said he had the TV or radio volume turned up because he has a hearing problem, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Phone harassment alleged
Bob Bratton, 66, of McGaha Chapel Road, said that on Saturday, Oct. 3, he received a threatening voicemail on his cell phone by someone he suspects is a recovering drug user. The message stated, "In Bob's best interest to call. He has something in the works. He (Bob) will be sorry." Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported on the incident.

Phone harassment alleged
Edward Judd, 50, of James Branch Way, said an acquaintance had been calling him several times day, from Thursday, Oct. 1, to Wednesday, Oct. 7, and leaving threatening messages on his phone, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

Theft reported
Vicky Worthington, 45, of Henry Road, said someone she knows stole her medication valued at $118, $162 in cash, four PlayStation 3 games, and eight CD's valued at $250, on Sunday, Oct. 4, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported.

Theft alleged
Len Dugan, 73, of Champion Way, said that on Saturday, Oct. 3, said someone stole a 24-inch chainsaw valued at $200, a battery charger valued at $80, and a weed eater worth $250, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Theft under $500
Amber N. Messer, 22, of 732 Highway 321, in Newport, was arrested this morning (Thursday, Oct. 8) at about 12:30 a.m. at Brock's Market on East Broadway in Newport and charged with theft under $500 for allegedly trying to shoplift various food items she put in her purse worth a total of $9.45, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

Public intoxication charge and arrest
Vernon L. Sane, 34, of 3491 Salem Road, in Parrottsville, was arrested this morning (Thursday, Oct. 8) at about 12:45 at Brock's Market on East Broadway and charged with public intoxication, Patrolman Allen Stump reported.

Tillman G. Sane, 37, of 310 Jimtown Road, in Newport, was arrested this morning (Thursday, Oct. 8) at about 12:30 at Brock's Deli on East Broadway and charged with public intoxication, Patrolman Ricky Parton reported.

Reckless driving and driving on a revoked license
Corey B. Buckner, 20, of 138 Rhea St., in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the intersection of Seventh and Beech streets and charged with reckless driving and driving on a revoked license, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Wallet with over $400 stolen
Perfecto Ademar Vasquez, 22, of 9th Street, in Newport, said that on Wednesday, Oct. 8, he was walking back to his vehicle in the parking lot of Krystal's on West Broadway when two white females and two white males came over to him. The first female allegedly asked for money for gas, Vasquez pulled $4 out of his wallet, and the female grabbed his wallet and ran while the two males allegedly held both of his hands. Vasquez said he followed the four people that got into a green Pontiac Grand Prix and said he got the tag number, but it did not match the description of the Pontiac. Vasquez told Patrolman Amy Elswick that his wallet had $408 in it.

Aggravated burglary
Donald J. Kenely, 29, of Wild Turkey Way, said someone broke into his home on Friday, Oct. 2, and stole items valued at $2,290, including a weed trimmer, boots, shirts, a potbelly wood stove, and three guns, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.

Theft under $500 reported
Jessica Ledford, 34, of Touchdown Way, in Newport, said that on Sunday, Oct. 4, an acquaintance visited her at home, went into her father's bedroom, and left. The father, Walter Ledford, said he noticed about $40 missing from his wallet. Jessica Ledford said her wallet was missing, as well as an Xbox 360 game console in her car, for a total value of $419.71, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Breaking and entering reported
Wayne Wood, 49, of North Susong Street, in Newport, said he returned home on Saturday, Oct. 3, and found missing from his home and property a concrete bench and angel, a flat screen TV he was renting from Aaron's store, stereo, PlayStation 2 games, microwave, several DVDs, and a portable DVD player for a total value of $1,800, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Assault by juvenile on other juvenile alleged
A 15-year-old said that on Monday, Oct. 5, he smacked a 13-year-old in the side of his head after the victim allegedly spat on him three days earlier and then threatened to do it again, Capt. Scott Lamb reported. The 13-year-old said he was having trouble hearing after being smacked.

Verbal assault alleged
Steve Gilbert, 51, of Suncrest Way, in Newport, said an acquaintance threatened him on Monday, Oct. 5, and told him to "watch his back because his brother is in the penitentiary and he doesn't care to go," Capt. Scott Lamb reported.

Private property damage
Police were called to 332 Maple Leaf Way concerning a boat and trailer that on Monday, Oct. 5, had rolled from its parked position at 320 Maple Leaf Drive and collided with the residence, Capt. Scott Lamb reported.

Theft under $500
Tracie O'Lear, 38, of Tips and Toes at 247 East Main St., in Newport, reported that overnight on Wednesday, Sept. 30, someone stole six plants sitting outside her shop with a total value of $178.50, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

Theft of purse at Walmart
Betty Batson, 72, of Alvy Hill Road, in Dandridge, said someone stole her purse while she was at the checkout counter at Walmart on Thursday, Oct. 1, at about 5 p.m. The Agner beige purse allegedly had $100 in cash, an LG cell phone worth $150, credit cards, and other cards, for a total value of 4348, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Stolen tag alleged
Jessica Price, 22, of Carson Springs Road, in Newport, said someone stole the tag from her 1987 Ford Bronco when it was parked at the Western Plaza near Food City West on either Friday, Oct. 2, or the next day, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Counterfeit $10 bill
Tracy Morris, manager of Wendy's at 1071 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said a cashier at the restaurant gave an individual change for a counterfeit $10 bill. The person allegedly ordered a Frosty and a small French fries, paid for the items, and then while the cash drawer was open, asked for change for the $10 bill, Capt. Scott Lamb reported.

Theft under $500
Nora Herron, 45, of Witson Drive, in Newport, said someone stole a total of $300 from her checking account at an area bank, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

Theft of scratch-off lottery tickets leads to jail
Reva Hux, 43, was arrested at her place of employment, the Pit Stop on Cosby Highway, on Sunday, Oct. 4, and charged with stealing approximately 63 Tennessee Lottery tickets, scratching them off, collecting the winnings, and throwing the tickets in a nearby trash can, between Sept. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 3, Lt. Terry Lawson reported. The total value of the tickets was $863.

Phone harassment
Kathy Santos, 54, of Bent Way, in Newport, said that she received a harassing phone call on her cell phone on Friday, Oct. 2, at about 5 a.m. The person allegedly used a lot of sexual comments and curse words, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Burglary of vehicle
Daisy Barnett, 38, of Edwina Bridgeport Road, in Newport, reported that someone stole $800 in cash from her unlocked 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe on Monday, Oct. 5, Lt. Terry Lawson reported. The vehicle was parked and left unattended in the side parking lot of Save A Lot.

Check fraud and forgery
Lisa Compton, 47, of Windy Cove Lane, in Talbott, said $1,275 in fraudulent checks was cashed at a credit union on West Broadway with her forged signature on each check, between Sept. 1 and Sept. 24, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Counterfeit money
The manager of Mapco and an employee identified the man they said tried unsuccessfully to use two counterfeit $100 bills at the Mapco store at 250 West Broadway, in Newport, on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 7:15 a.m., Patrolman William Garber reported. The man left the store before police arrived.

Burglary reported
An employee on the Douglas Cooperative property at 465 Learning Way, in Newport, reported that between Friday, Oct. 2, and Monday, Oct. 5, someone broke open a door to a storage building, causing approximately $100 of damage to the door frame, and stole a red Coleman air compressor valued at $421.77, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Vehicle allegedly loaned to a stranger who steals wallet
Chris Sneed, 24, of Lennison Circle, in Newport, said he loaned his vehicle to someone he does not know and when he got it back, his wallet was gone. The wallet contained his driver's license, social security card, two ATM cards, and a birth certificate, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

Dogs running at large
Phillip M. Poridone, 28, of Boomer Way, said he was walking from his home to his mailbox past a residence on Sunset Gap Road on Saturday, Oct. 3, when "approximately" three dogs came out onto the road and were "biting at him," Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported. Poridone allegedly managed to kick at the dogs until their owner came outside and chased the dogs off of him, the report stated.

Attempted break-in
Jack Rupp, 68, of Highway 411, in Newport, said that on Friday, Oct. 2, sometime after midnight, someone tried but was unsuccessful in breaking into a utility building on his property. He said a hasp and master lock were damaged in the break-in attempt, Lt. Rick Laws reported.

Theft reported
Tammy Husky, 32, of Windsong Drive, said she noticed her wallet was missing from her car on Sunday, Oct. 4. Included in items stolen were three gold wedding band rings and a gold band valued at $2,000, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

Theft over $1,000
Christina M. Lawson, 42, of Wyatt Village Road, in Bean Station, said that on Sunday, Oct. 4, between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., someone entered her room at Family Inns West and took $1,400 in cash and 300 pills, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.

Theft of tag
Jeff Shelton, 43, of Overlook Way, said that on Tuesday, Sept. 29, or the next morning, someone stole the tag to his vehicle. It was registered to a 1993 Toyota, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Breaking and entering
John Brown Null, 50, of Lannie Road, in Jacksonville, Fla., said that on Monday, Oct. 5, at about 11 p.m., he was sitting in his truck at the Time Out Travel Center, when he felt the vehicle rocking. He said he got out, walked to the back of his trailer and saw the feet of one person who took off running into nearby woods. The lock was broken off, and the doors open, but nothing was stolen, Constable Danny Hartsell reported.

Theft at Grace Missionary Baptist Church
Cheryl Ann Black, 45, of Snap Dragon Way, said that on Sunday, Oct. 4, at about 6 p.m., a white female with blonde hair, about 35 to 40 years old, took $10 out of Black's purse that she had left in the children's nursery for a minute, at Grace Missionary Baptist Church, at 526 Highway 73. The woman left in a gray sedan, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

Accident victim airlifted to hospital
Jimmy R. Carnal, 54, of 123 Solitaire Way, in Bybee, was flown by a Wings helicopter to the Johnson City Medical Center on Tuesday, Oct. 6, after the 1978 Chevy pickup truck he was driving ran into the rear of a 2007 Mack dump truck stopped in front of him on North Street/Highway 321 at Cody Street, Capt. Brad Ball reported. Damage to the dump truck was mostly in the undercarriage, including air brake lines. The truck was driven by Jimmy L. Shropshire, 28, of 2064 Shropshire Hollow Road, in Dandridge, the report stated.

Theft under $500
Brandon S. Shults, 24, of 521 Overlook Way, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7, and charged with theft under $500. A warrant states that on Sept. 29, Shults possessed three wooden bears identified as stolen the previous night from Williams Lawn Care in Newport. The bears are valued at $250, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

Arrested for theft under $500
Linda G. Hassan, 39, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Newport Police Department, where she turned herself in, and charged with theft under $500. The Sept. 29 theft took place while Hassan was an employee at the Huddle House, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.

Theft under $500 reported
Edna Ball, 42, of Rockhill Road, in Newport, said she suspects a female stole her black and gray Motorola cell phone, valued at $100, from inside her van in the parking lot of Shoney's, at 910 Cosby Highway, in Newport, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the morning while Ball unloaded items from her 1993 Oldsmobile van for a yard sale in Shoney's parking lot, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Five counts of theft under $500 charged in arrest
Brian J. Crabtree, 24, of 2194 Stoneview Way, in Cosby, was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 7, and charged with five counts of theft under $500, for alleging stealing from the Subway's on Cosby Highway, while he was an employee there, between Sept. 5 and Sept. 17, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

DUI 1st offense charge and arrest
Michael J. McGaha, 46, of 606 Runnion St., in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 9 p.m., at the Stop and Go gas station on Cosby Highway, in Newport, and charged with DUI 1st offense, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

Violation of probation and capias charged in arrest
James S. Hall, 34, of 598 Lehigh Drive, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 6, and charged with violation of probation and capias, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

Theft over $500
Ronnie Allen, 44, of Leaf Road, in Newport, named an individual he believes cashed three of his unemployment checks of $300 each, between Aug. 7 and Friday, Oct. 2, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Counterfeit $100 bill at Burger King
Amy Eply, 29, of Long Avenue, in Newport, allegedly tried to purchase food at Burger King, on the Cosby Highway, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a counterfeit $100 bill. She told Patrolman Ricky Parton she received the bill at A.J.'s by the River bar on Highway 25E, where she works, and that she had no idea who gave it to her. The bill was confiscated and placed into evidence.

Counterfeit $100 bill used at Walmart
Darla Harris, an employee of Walmart, at 1075 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said Tina Annette Bible, 35, tried to pay for items at the department store on Tuesday, Oct. 6, with a counterfeit $100 bill. Bible reportedly stated she could not remember where or from whom she got the bill, Lt. Terry Lawson reported.

Counterfeit money
Rebecca Gorenflo, 33, an employee of Walmart, at 1075 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said she found what the National Bank of Tennessee confirmed was a counterfeit $5 bill. Gorenflo told Capt. Scott Lamb that she did not know where or when Walmart received the counterfeit bill.
