Camper hits tree with vehicle
Fred P. Woodfin, 71, of 897 Dry Creek Road, in Jonesborough, said that on Tuesday, Sept. 22, he accidentally backed up into a tree with a 2005 Kia Sedona while on a camping trip in the Weavers Bend area, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.

Vehicle strikes light pole
Jerry S. Williamson, 51, of 476 Ponder Road, in Newport, said he was in a 2003 Ford Mustang on Tuesday, Sept. 22, passing a vehicle on Lower English Creek Road, when he drove off the shoulder of the road and struck a light pole. He was not injured, Sgt. Tony Whitten reported.

Vehicle reported stolen
Jame Rich, 27, of 4309 Shults Road, in Cosby, said that on Tuesday, Sept. 22, he parked his 1995 Mazda 626 on the side of the road while he went fishing on Roy Road. He said he returned to find it was stolen and shattered glass where the vehicle had been parked. The vehicle is white with a dent in the driver side front fender above the tire, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported.

Items reported stolen
Gayle Morris, 56, of 382 Mount Hollow Way, in Cosby, told Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey on Friday, Sept. 25, that on Aug. 21, between 6 and 9 p.m., an aquaintance of her daughter came over and after she left, the following items were missing: $150 in cash, a LG Shine cell phone ($300), Olympus digital camera ($300), and a window screen ($50), Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Vandalism reported
Shanna Eakins, 16, of Baxter Road, in Cosby, reported that on Friday, Sept. 25, someone threw a rock into the back glass of a 1994 Jeep Cherokee and caused other damage, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported. Damage to the back glass was estimated at $150; to the side glass, $150; and to the driver's side rear fender, $500.

Theft reported
Wayne Ford, 46, of Hannon Road, in Newport, told Sgt. Tony Whitten on Friday, Sept. 25, that over the previous weekend, someone had come onto some land he leases and stole two gates valued at $200, a tree stand valued at $150, and damaged another tree stand worth $75.

Theft of property over $500 reported
Barnett Williams, 70, of Lehigh Drive, in Newport, said he thinks he knows who came into his home on Thursday, Sept. 24, and stole a 52-inch flat screen TV worth $1,700, a double-barrel shotgun worth $100, and $200 in cash, Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury reported.

Break-in reported
James Walker, 69, of 1848 Hall Cemetery Road, in Newport, said that on Thursday, Sept. 24, someone entered his 1987 Chevrolet Blazer and removed several tools and a gas can with 15 gallons in it worth a total of $340, Deputy Sheriff Andy Trett reported.

Hit and run on Bogard Road
Kristoffer M. Sutton, 18, of 2657 Booty Road, in Newport, said he was traveling north on Bogard Road near Booty Road on Thursday, Sept. 24, when a pickup truck traveling south forced him off the road and through a barbed wire fence in order to avoid a collision, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Accident in Cocke County High School parking lot
Katie Buckner, 16, of 3135 Point Pleasant Road, in Newport, allegedly backed a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire from a parked position in the Cocke County High School on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and into the path of a 1999 Dodge Dakota driven by Erika Danielle Fullington, 17, of 584 Wells Drive, in Newport, Deputy Sheriff  Randy Cutshaw reported.

Burglary/theft reported
Charlene Phillips, 59, of Banks Road, in Newport, reported on Wednesday, Sept. 23, that sometime between 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23, someone stole a toolbox with assorted tools and a Stihl weed trimmer from her property. The weed trimmer is valued at $200, the toolbox and tools at $350, and a pad lock at $15, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Domestic assault charge, arrest
Jason Ball, 29, of 172 Estie Way, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, and charged with domestic assault, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

Theft over $1,000 charge and arrest
Steven Kip Smith, 22, of 779 Lehigh Drive, in Newport, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25, and charged with theft over $1,000 in connection with the theft of $2,000 worth of property from the residence of Barnett Williams at 781 Lehigh Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 23, Det. Bryan Murr reported. Items stolen were a Samsung flat screen TV, a double-barrel shotgun, and cash.

Violation of probation charge
Tommy L. Helms, 28, of 695 Dirt Way, in Newport, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, and charged with violation of probation, St. Tony Whitten reported.

Single vehicle accident on Old Cosby Cutoff
Roger E. Ball, 19, of 108 Sunshine Circle, in Newport, said he was headed east onto Old Cosby Cutoff at Granite Road on Saturday, Sept. 26, when he allegedly applied his brakes and the vehicle began to vibrate and the right rear tire struck a culvert, causing Ball to lose control of his 1999 Chevrolet SK1. Ball lost control of his vehicle, which landed down an embankment on its side, causing severe damage to the vehicle. Two people were injured, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Accident on Interstate 40
Crystal Y. Andrade, 32, of 9 Summer Vale Court, in Columbia, S.C., said her 2007 Susuki Forenza went into a spin and hit the guardrail at exit 451 of Interstate 40 headed east, on Friday, Sept. 25, Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings reported. No one was injured.

Vehicle hits large rock on Highway 321
Frances P. Weeks, 33, of 4823 Hooper Highway, in Cosby, said she was traveling south on Highway 321 near Caney Creek Road, on Sunday, Sept. 27, when her 2006 Nissan Altima hit a large rock on the road, causing damage to a wheel and passenger side of the vehicle, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported.

Accident at exit 432 of Interstate 40
Patrick R. McGinty, 20, of 12922 Lynn Haven, in Cypress, Tx., was traveling west in a 2007 Honda Civic on Interstate 40 between mile marker 431 and 430 when he struck a large rock in the road, doing minor damage to the vehicle, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey reported.

Accident on New Cave Church Road
Joseph McGaha, 21, of 265 Clear Creek Road, in Newport, was traveling west on New Cave Church Road near Able Way, on Saturday, Sept. 26, when the vehicle he was driving, a 1995 Saturn S12, left the right side of the road, went into a ditch, and rolled over onto its top, Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton reported.

Vehicle hydroplanes on Interstate 40
Ashley L. Davis, 27, of 569 Pilot Mountain Road, in Sunbright, Tn., said she was traveling east on Interstate 40 near mile marker 437, in a 2007 Ford F150 pickup truck, when the vehicle hydroplaned and spun out of control, hitting a 2005 Ford 5SE driven by James J. White, 61, of 1940 Dry Branch Road, in Philadelphia, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported. No one was injured.

Burglary reported
Betty Ragan, 52, of 121 Nightingale Lane, in Newport, said that between Friday, Sept. 25, and Monday, Sept. 28, someone stole chrome wheels, a chainsaw, sander, sawsall, and gas, worth a total of $2,493, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.

Burglary of a vehicle/vandalism
Jerry L. Raines and Joseph Raines said someone broke into their 1992 Ford Econoline parked at the Cub Motor, on Monday, Sept. 28, and stole several of their work tools, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.

Theft/forgery reported
Sherry L. Sutton, 52, of 720 Big Bone Road, said someone stole her checkbook and wrote seven checks, forging her name, at various places, Sgt. Eric Rinehart reported.

Burglary/theft reported
Dr. Samuel Stuetz, 33, of Woodland Way, in Newport, said that between Thursday, Sept. 17, and Monday, Sept. 21, someone entered his barn and stole a John Deere generator he valued at $2,000, Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt reported.

Auto stolen, then returned
Crystal Gregg, 28, of Fairfax Road, in Newport, said that someone took her 1998 Honda Accord from 730 Old Edwina Road, in Newport, on Monday, Sept. 28, without consent from the owners, Crystal and Larry Gregg, of Newport.  The vehicle was valued at $4,500, Deputy Sheriff C.J. Ball reported. The alleged thief brought the Honda back at around 8:30 p.m. and let the owner of the vehicle take possession of it. The owner was advised that charges are filed against the defendant and he will go before a judge after he is arrested.

Theft of weed eater and compressor reported
Keith Lane, 39, of 361 Wiley Town Road, said that on Sunday, Sept. 27, or the next day, someone stole a TroyBilt weed trimmer and an air compressor from his porch, Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb reported.

Harassment alleged
Cheryl Black, 45, of 510 Snapdragon Way, in Newport, said someone she knows had been calling her derogatory names on Friday, Sept. 25, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.

Theft in progress witnessed
Beverly Sharon Franzke, of Holt Hollow Road, in Newport, said that on Saturday, Sept. 26, she witnessed four males who were allegedly loading some junk parts from a neighbors' residence while the neighbors were out of town. Franzke said when she hollered at the four males, they unloaded their truck and fled, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons reported.

Theft and vandalism over $500
Daniel Paxton, a network technician for Verizon, said that when he went to the Verizon Wireless cell tower around 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, he discovered the front gates had been removed and someone stole two copper buss bars and copper ground wire, valued at $1,550, Deputy Sheriff David Crowder reported.

Damage from heavy rains
Roy Hill, 55, of Middle Creek Road, said that on Saturday, Sept. 26, during heavy rains, a tree beside his barn fell, causing its root system to heavily damage his barn and items inside, including a boat, Deputy Sheriff Mike Shropshire reported. The tree also damaged three mailboxes on Middle creek Road. Damages were estimated as follows: the barn, $40,000; boat, $8,000; and mailboxes, $300.

Armed robbery
Jerry Kyle Walker, 21, of Frank Road, in Morristown, said that on Monday, Sept. 28, about 00:35,he was walking down Highway 25E when a vehicle pulled up to him and a male got out of the car. The man allegedly asked Walker if he needed a ride, and then asked if he had any money. Walker said no, but the male, holding a knife in his right hand, told him to take his shorts off. Walker ran away after the male got $180, a Samsung cell phone, driver's license, phone charger, and pair of shorts, Constable Danny Hartsell reported.

Vandalism reported
Michael Foster, 27, of 492 Highway 160, in Newport, said he returned home on Sunday, Sept. 27, and found someone had thrown a bottle jack through the front windshield of his 1993 Honda Civic. The suspect allegedly called Alan Foster and told him he was the person who damaged the windshield, Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb reported. The damage is estimated at $250.

Phone harassment alleged
Ashley Metcalf, 27, of Dark Hollow Road, said on Sunday, Sept. 27, that a woman she knows keeps texting her and harassing her, Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported. In another report, by Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb, Metcalf alleged that a friend was driving on Dark Hollow Road, on Saturday, Sept. 26, when a vehicle with the same suspect stopped in the middle of the road and got out of her car, causing the friend to almost hit her.

Burglary reported
Kevin Scott Reed, 24, of Bonanza Drive, said that when he came home on Friday, Sept. 26, he noticed someone had broken into his home and taken a revolver (estimated at $220), a mini-motorcycle ($300), lock box ($100), wallet, cash ($25), and license ($28), Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported.

Theft reported
Michael Hust, 28, of Salem Road, said that on Saturday, Sept. 26, he had some friends over, and after one of them asked him if he would sell his vehicle, and Hust started it up, they left, and Hust noticed missing the following: medication ($700), tattoo gun ($250), and a 12 gauge single shot ($200), Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell reported.

Accident on Cosby Highway
Mary McKellick, 50, of 141 Brookview Dricw, in Newport, reported that she was traveling north on Cosby Highway near Jones Circle on Tuesday, Sept. 22, when she allegedly took her eyes off the road for a moment and struck the rear end of a 2006 Ford 500 driven by Samuel Yves-Saint Shek, 53, of 956 Holly Oaks Lane, in Dandridge, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

Vehicle strikes pedestrian in the leg
Tony L. Williams, 42, of 1850 Cardinal Way, in Newport, said he had stopped for a red light at the intersection of Jones Circle and the Cosby Highway on Wednesday, Sept. 23, said he did not see anyone walking, and when the light turned green, he started forward and accidentally struck a pedestrian in the left leg, Patrolman William Garber reported. The pedestrian allegedly stated he thought he had the right of way to cross the street, the report stated. However, Garber wrote that the location of the incident was not a crosswalk and "was not indicated (as such) by any signs."

Attempted burglary
Luther Taylor, 73, of 531 Summit Ridge Hill, in Newport, told police on Tuesday, Sept. 22, that when he opened the back door to his home, he discovered someone had broken the door frames into pieces, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

The mysterious case of the missing computer
Markita Hembree, 27, of 305 Dykes St., in Newport, told Det. Donna Hopkins that on Wednesday, Sept. 23, about one week after she filed a report that her computer was stolen, she went outside and found it sitting in a chair by her door. She said it was not damaged at all and could not figure out how it ended up in the chair.

Theft under $500 report disputed
Det. Donna Hopkins reported that on Wednesday, Sept. 23, she spoke with Burl Gillespie, 53, of 147 Tabor St., in Newport, about reports he had filed. Gillespie allegedly stated his cordless phone was never missing and he never filed a report with the police department. He said his phone was in its base in his home. Another record showed that Gillespie told Patrolman Matthew Elliott on Tuesday, Sept. 22, that he had let an acquaintance borrow his bike who later said the bike, which is valued at $200, was gone because she let a relative have it.

Stolen cell phone
Laurel Shanks, 24, of 1870 Whitlock Road, in Newport, reported on Tuesday, Sept. 22, that she let an acquaintance use her red Blackberry 8130 cell phone, Patrolman Billy Woody reported. Shanks said when she asked for her phone back, the person said they could not find it. The number on the missing phone had allegedly been disconnected.

Harassing phone calls at work
Megan Sartain, 22, of Chickory Road, in Newport, said that on Tuesday, Sept. 22, an acquaintance called her at work at Shoney's approximately nine times in five hours, Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.

Theft of property alleged
Marvin Worley, of Murphy Oil, at 1077 Cosby Highway, said a video camera at their business recorded the theft of two envelopes containing a total of $400 at the business on Tuesday, Sept. 22, Capt. Brad Ball reported.

Harassment/phone harassment alleged
Jacqueline Collins, 59, of 120 Mulberry St., in Newport, told Sgt. Jason Smith on Tuesday, Sept. 22, that she had for almost all of the past two weeks been getting harassing phone calls from an acquaintance "at all hours of the night," and obscenities said to her in person at her home on Thursday, Sept. 9.

Gas and a Coke not paid for
An employee of West End Exxon, at 447 West Broadway, in Newport, told Patrolman Travis Gorrell that on Tuesday, Sept. 22, a man she knows by name entered the gas station and said his truck had run out of gas at Fred's and he needed some gas to get him back to the business to pay for it The employee also said the man took a Coke and said he would pay her in full after he returned to his truck and pawned some TV's he had in his truck. He allegedly returned one hour later and said he would pay his $8.26 bill in a few minutes, left, and never returned.

Counterfeit $20 bill
A manager of Huddle House, at 1130 West Highway 25/70, in Newport, told police on Tuesday, Sept. 22, that the store received a counterfeit $20 bill on Sept. 21, sometime between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., by an unknown suspect, Capt. Ronnie Landers reported.

Two counterfeit $10 bills
An employee of the Mapco gas station at 250 West Broadway, in Newport, said that on Wednesday, Sept. 23, a white male entered the store and attempted to purchase $11.57 worth of merchandise with two counterfeit $10 bills. The suspect, which the employee named, was allegedly with another white male in a white pickup truck, Sgt. David R. Smith reported.

Counterfeit $5 bill discovered
Jerry Lynn, 64, of Myers Circle, in Newport, said that on Tuesday, Sept. 22, he went to Food City at the Eastern Plaza Shopping Center to purchase some items and was told by the cashier that the five-dollar bill he had was counterfeit, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported. Lynn allegedly stated he had gotten the money from a gas station in Newport.

Criminal trespass alleged
David C. Livingston, 29, of 670 Myers Circle, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 23, and charged with criminal trespass, Patrolman William Garber reported.

Failure to appear charge
Randall H. Fain, 24, of 151 Carpenter Road, in Parrottsville, was charged Wednesday, Sept. 23, with failure to appear in Cocke County Circuit Court for child support, Patrolman Matt Franklin reported. Jefferson County Det. Ronnie Coleman turned over Fain to Newport Police Department officers who then took him to the Cocke County Jail Annex.

Hit and run at ConAgra parking lot
The driver of a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country said he parked the vehicle at ConAgra on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at about 11 a.m. and went to work. He said when he came out at about 3 p.m., he discovered someone had backed their vehicle into the driver side rear section of his vehicle, Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.

Public intoxication charge and arrest outside bar
Bobby L. Adkinson, 37, of 215 Bowman Drive, in Newport, was arrested Sunday, Sept. 28, outside Good Times Bar on Main Street, and charged with pubic intoxication, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.

Worthless checks charges
Joshua E. Cole, 30, of 554 Freeman St., in Newport, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, and charged with worthless checks over $1,000 and worthless checks under $500, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported. The owner of Pit-Shop Mobile Station on the Cosby Highway in Newport she Cole wrote approximately 13 checks for a total of $1,923.74 that had returned on a closed account. There were additional bank charges of $390. The owner of West-End Exxon on West Broadway she had two checks from Cole returned on a closed account that totaled $135, plus $60 in bank charges.

Domestic assault charge and arrest
Stevie D. Gilland, 30, of 590 North St., in Newport, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, and charged with domestic assault, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.

Theft under $500 charge in arrest
John Hall, 23, of 137 Mulberry St., in Newport, was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Movie Gallery on the Cosby Highway, in Newport, and charged with theft under $500 after officers found he had a warrant for theft under $500 out of Cocke County Sessions Court, Patrolman Robby McMahan reported.

Theft under $500
Arthur Styles, owner of the Broad Way Body Shop at 114 North Jefferson Ave., in Newport, said that on Saturday, Sept. 26, a witness saw three juveniles remove the front clip to a 1980s Chevrolet truck, Patrolman Billy Woody reported.
Petitions were filed against the three subjects for theft over $500.

Theft under $500 and vandalism
Belinda Holt, 47, of North Highway 340 in Parrottsville, said that her son returned from a three-day field trip on Sunday, Sept. 27, to find his vehicle, a 1998 GMC pickup truck, parked at the Cocke County High School parking lot, had a broken driver's side window out, his car stereo was gone, and the dash busted, Capt. James Holt reported. The CD player/stereo is valued at $300; damage to the window, $200; and damage to the dash, $100.

Breaking and entering
Cathy Sutton, 19, of Terrace Way, in Newport, said that when she returned home on Monday, Sept. 28, she found someone had forced the door open to her apartment, Patrolman William Garber reported. Nothing was taken and damage to the door is estimated at $100.

Counterfeit $100 bill
Conrad Morales, 28, allegedly tried to use a counterfeit $100 bill on Monday, Sept. 28, to pay for food at Dairy Queen, at 365 West Broadway, in Newport, Lt. Terry Lawson reported. Morales said someone gave him the bill as payment for work Morales did for him.

Vehicle reported stolen
Kara Shelton, 20, of Carson Springs Road, in Newport, said she and Kristopher Zieger left their 1993 Chevrolet Astro Van near Fred's on Thursday, Sept. 24 after the motor blew up. They said they got a call on Monday, Sept. 28, that the van was gone. Zieger said he called every wrecker service in Cocke County, but none of them had the van. The van, blue in color with a brown hood and white gas door, was estimated at $300.
