Violation of probation, other charges in arrest
Kittie J. Haynes, 45, of 325 Jasmine Drive, in Newport,
was arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, at 9:30 a.m., after Sgt. Tony Whitten saw her
standing on a sidewalk "on Skid Row," or Woodlawn Avenue, and that
she had warrants out for her arrest. She was arrested and charged with
violation of probation, failure to appear, and capias.
Violation of community corrections
Johnny L. Byrd, 45, of 335 Prospect Ave., in Newport, was
arrested Saturday, Sept. 26, when Sgt. Tony Whitten also saw him on Woodlawn
Avenue and arrested him for violation of community corrections.
Attempted fraud
Geraldine Hall, 55, of 1187 Bayberry Way, in Newport,
said someone stole her pocketbook and debit card from her vehicle on Sunday,
Sept. 20, while it was parked at her home. She said someone tried to use her
debit card at an Exxon station later the same day, Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey
reported.
Vehicle hydroplaned on Industrial Road
Quinn Woods-Robinson, 19, of 2454 Buster Road, in Bybee,
said he was traveling north in a 2003 Saturn on Industrial Road at 1061
Industrial Road on Saturday, Sept. 19, at around 7:20 p.m., when his vehicle
hydroplaned as he negotiated a curve. The vehicle struck the embankment on the
left side of the road, Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson reported.
Police
Arrested for aggravated robbery
Michael ("Snake") E. Robinson, 49, of 125
Lakeview St., in Newport, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25, and charged with
aggravated robbery, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. A victim said he asked
him to borrow some money at a Freeman street residence, and when he pulled some
change and a pill bottle from his pants pocket, Robinson allegedly pulled a
knife and took the pill bottle. After he was placed in jail, officers served
him with another warrant out of Sessions Court for theft under $500, according
to a report by Capt. James Holt.
Theft over $1,000
Charles Mason, Jr., 32, of 2814 Happy Hollow Road, in
Parrottsville, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25, and charged with theft over
$1,000. Mason allegedly entered Mason Realty at 711 Cosby Highway and took a
computer tower, monitor, router, mouse, and a digital camera valued at $1,510,
Patrolman Donald Coakley reported.
Public intoxication charge
Jay S. Nagle, 38, of 410 9th ST., in Newport, was
arrested Friday, Sept. 25, and charged with public intoxication, Patrolman
Robby McMahan reported. Nagle was allegedly found passed out behind the wheel
of his 1997 Jeep Cherokee parked in the parking lot of the Citgo gas station on
Highway 25/70.
Two charges of reckless endangerment
Wesley Valentine, 31, of 208 South Side Circle, in
Newport, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25, and charged with two counts of reckless
endangerment (by a motor vehicle). Two women said he struck them on their legs,
bruising them just below the knees, with his vehicle outside his residence,
Capt. James Holt reported.
Two charges in arrest
Corey B. Buckner, 20, of 138 Rhea St., in Newport, was
arrested Thursday, Sept. 24, and charged with possession of Schedule II in
excess of one-half gram, and driving on a revoked license, Capt. Scott Lamb
reported. Police allegedly found one gram of crack cocaine hidden in his 1989
Chevrolet.
Counterfeit money
Police responded to a call from Walmart about a woman who
allegedly attempted to pass four counterfeit $20 bills at the department store
on Friday, Sept. 25, Patrolman Billy Woody reported.
Two counterfeit bills
A man told officers his daughter had two counterfeit $20
bills which she allegedly got from a local bank on Friday, Sept. 25, Patrolman
Billy Woody reported. Officers spoke to the manager of the bank who stated she
felt the money did not come from the bank, but that security would review
videos.
DUI 1st offense charged
Roy B. Gullett, 63, of 154 Hillcrest Drive, in
Parrottsville, was arrested Friday, Sept. 25, at 3:30 a.m. and charged with DUI
1st offense, Patrolman Amy Elswick reported.
Theft of merchandise under $500 charge
Brandi N. Roberts, 27, of 199 Clevenger Cutoff Road, in
Newport, was arrested at Walmart, at 1075 Cosby Highway, on Thursday, Sept. 24,
and charged with theft of merchandise under $500 after a loss prevention
officer allegedly saw her steal several toiletry items totaling $194.21,
Patrolman Ricky Parton reported.
Burglary of vehicle reported
Michelle Cook, 33, of Harpers Circle, in Newport, told
Patrolman Matt Franklin that on Thursday, Sept. 24, someone broke the back
window of her 1995 Pontiac Grand Am and stole two subwoofers valued at $389 and
a car stereo amplifier valued at $53.
Theft under $1,000 reported
Amanda Fine, of 2802 Early Road, in Newport, said that on
Thursday, Sept. 24, someone stole her pocketbook she had left on a chair
unattended for one-half hour, at Baptist Hospital Memorial Gardens, Lt. Terry
Lawson reported. Fine said $200 cash of hers and $50 cash of an acquaintance
plus several identification cards for both of them was stolen for a total value
of $754.
Accident on Cosby Highway
Shawna C. Bryant, 34, of 958 Old Greeneville Highway, in
Parrottsville, allegedly ran into the back of a 2001 Subaru stopped for traffic
on Highway 321 at Bryant Street (near Dixie Pawn) on Thursday, Sept. 24. The
Subaru was driven by Barbra E. Hudson/Ashton, 57, of 804 Cool Way, in Cosby,
Patrolman Matt Franklin reported.
Accident on Cosby Highway at Heritage Blvd.
A 1994 GMC Sierra driven by Christopher A. Lane, 39, of
1477 Green Acres Road, in Newport, on Highway 321/Cosby Highway at Heritage
Blvd., collided on Thursday, Sept. 24, with a 2001 Nissan Sentra driven by
Brittany M. Clevenger, 20, of 1241 Fox Chase Road, in Newport, Patrolman
William Garber reported.
Accident on North Street
A 1994 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Roy B. Kirby,
56, of 1973 Fowler Grove, in Bybee, allegedly hit a 2005 Ford Explorer SUV in
the rear end on Thursday, Sept. 24, on Highway 321/North Street, after the Ford
stopped to make a right turn on Main Street, Patrolman Allen Stump reported.
The Ford was driven by Eric F. Mason, 40, of 523 4th St., in Newport.
Accident on East Main Street
A 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by Sarah F. Phillips, 61, of
364 Jasmine Drive, in Newport, allegedly backed up from a parking space in
front of Newport Dry Goods on East Main Street at McNabb Street, and into a
1998 Toyota Camry driven by Zora J. Fine, 39, of 105 Hunting Woods Way, in
Newport, on Thursday, Sept. 24. Fine was traveling west on East Main Street,
Lt. Terry Lawson reported.
Accident on Main Street at Cosby Highway
A 2010 Ford Mustang rented by Julie C. Crabtree, of 475
Rock Hill Road, in Newport, allegedly struck a 1997 GMC Sierra pickup truck
driven by Melvin R. Hance, 54, of 390 River Rest Way, in Newport, in the rear
after Hance had stopped completely for turning traffic, Capt. Brad Ball
reported. The accident occurred on Thursday, Sept. 24, on Main Street at Cosby
Highway. Crabtree said she did not see Hance stopping before hitting his
vehicle.
Assault alleged
Crystal Huff, 42, of 354 Ruble Ave., in Newport, said an
acquaintance blocked her vehicle at the intersection of Woodlawn Avenue and
Mulberry Avenue on Friday, Sept. 25, Patrolman Travis Gorrell reported. Huff
said the alleged aggressor cursed her and struck her in the chin and left leg
through the driver's side window of the aggressor's vehicle.
Wallet reported stolen in parked car
Tallia Clouse, 25, of 2825 Indian Creek Road, in
Dandridge, reported stolen a wallet she left in her locked 1993 Ford Taurus at
the Courthouse in downtown Newport for about one-half hour. The wallet's
contents included $400 in cash, a MasterCard, Visa, food stamp card, plus money
and a driver's license belonging to an acquaintance, Patrolman Donald Coakley
reported.
Accident blamed on nondefrosted window
Timothy Carl Duncan, 51, of 707 Old
Sevierville Highway, in Newport, said he was traveling west on Highway 25/70
near Ed's Way in a 1986 Subaru when he observed a 1998 Saturn coming in the
opposite direction, but in his lane. Duncan said he tried to avoid a head-on
collision, but the two vehicles made contact on their left sides. Jerry Roger
Gilbert, 67, of 1504 Highway 25/70, in Newport, said he did not allow time for
his Saturn's window to defrost before leaving his residence and therefore did
not notice he was traveling in the wrong lane before the collision. No one was
injured, Patrolman Matthew Elliott reported.
Correction
A crime brief printed in the Sunday, Sept. 20
edition of The Newport Plain Talk was incorrect. The news story, based on an
official Newport Police Department report, should have stated that William
Wendall Jackson Sr., 70, of 115 Drive Way, in Newport, allegedly backed up a 2004
Chevy pickup truck from its parking space in the parking lot of Jefferson-Cocke
Utility District and struck a 1983 Buick Regal in the driver side rear door
that was waiting to exit the parking lot and that was driven by Mildred R.
Grahl, 77, of 534 Ninth St., in Newport, on Friday, Sept. 18, according to
Capt. Brad Ball's report.
