SHERIFF

INCIDENT

Drug charges placed

Bobby A. Burgin, 49, 140 Clairborne Drive, Newport, faces drug charges following his arrest by Deputy Robert Thornton on Wednesday, Sept. 9. According to Thornton, Burgin was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule II drug (crack cocaine), and aggravated domestic assault.

Medication theft

Beverly Askew, 48, 1841 Edwina-Bridgeport Road, reported the theft of 50-60 Kadian 100 milligram morphine pills to Deputy Jason Oury on Tuesday, Sept. 1. According to Oury's report, Askew said that after a family member had visited her home, she noticed the medication was missing.

Order of protection violated

Deputy Jason Oury investigated a report of a violation of protection order on Wednesday, Sept. 9. According to Oury, Marianne O'Bryan, 127 Alpha Road, reported that someone had violated an order of protection issued last January by Cocke County Sessions Court.


Home burglarized

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, Dee Dee Stogner, 193 Eagle Mountain Way, reported her home burglarized to Deputy Hollis Emmons. According to reports, someone entered the home by breaking out a window. Items missing include assorted jewelry, a Phillips 19" flat-screen television, a DVD player, a Cannon digital camera, and a 9 mm Smith & Wesson gun.

Tires sliced on vehicle

Deputy Hollis Emmons responded to a call regarding a vandalism incident on Wednesday, Sept. 9. According to Emmons, Charles Fox, 506 Elana Lane, reported that sometime during the previous night, someone had sliced all four tires on his 1998 Honda Accord.

Phone harassment reported

Deputy Tony Bailey filed a report regarding telephone harassment on Wednesday, Sept. 9. According to Bailey, the complainant was Nina Mullen, 3009 Knob Creek Road, Bybee, who reported two such calls.

POLICE

Wallet taken

On Saturday, George D. Clayton, 70, 1034 Iverson Avenue, Nashville, reported the theft of his wallet from his room at Mountain Crest Inn. The wallet and contents included $700 in cash. Patrol Officer Travis Gorrell investigated the theft.

Grill gone

Sgt. Stephen Higginbotham responded to a theft report on Friday. According to his report, Tim Harris, 622 Third St., said that he is in the process of moving and had left a charbroil gas grill, valued at $450 on the carport. When he returned late Thursday night, he noticed it was missing.

Change acceptors robbed

Randy Allen, 49, 1401 Douglas Street, White Pine, reported the burglary of two change acceptors at Allen's Car Wash, 139 West Broadway, Newport, to Patrol Officer Travis Gorrell on Friday. According to Gorrell's report, damage to the machines is estimated at $50 and an additional $10 in change was taken.

Medications missing

Charles D. Price, 32, 615 Myers Circle, reported the theft of medications to Sgt. David R. Smith on Friday. According to Smith, Price said he was at a Freeman Street address when someone asked to borrow money. When he pulled some change and a pill bottle from his pocket, Price said the other person allegedly pulled a pocketknife, grabbed the pill bottle, and said, "You better just keep on walking, or I'll cut you."

Vandalism reported

Burl Gillespie, 53, 147 Tabor Street, told Patrol Officer Billy Woody on Friday, that someone kicked the back door to his home in and broke the glass. Damage is estimated at $300. There is a suspect in the incident.

More vandalism

Marcy Leslie reported an act of vandalism to Capt. James Holt on Wednesday. According to Holt, Leslie said her husband came to the residence of Megan Phillips, 425 Bicentennial Way and got into an argument with her, then took a pipe wrench and struck a 2001 Chrysler belonging to Phillips several times, breaking out the front window and damaging the front headlight.

Vandalism under $500

Tammy Lowe, 51, 544 Oak Ave., Newport, told Patrol Officer Matthew Elliott on Friday that during an argument with Mark Wilhelm, 1002 Texas Way, Newport, he jerked the television cable wire from the wall and broke a wooden table. Wilhelm told Sgt. David R. Smith that he and Lowe were in the process of separating and that he had gone to the residence to retrieve some of his belongings, when they began arguing and that Lowe had allegedly attacked him with a set of car keys and bit him.

Theft of bicycles

Frankie Fraley, 40, 361 Driskill Circle, reported the theft of two bicycles to Patrol Officer Billy Woody on Friday. They are valued at $100.

Harassment alleged

Charlie Huff, 28, 653 Eighth Street, told Sgt. Stephen Higginbotham on Friday that an acquaintance has been calling and threatening to "burn your place down. You better get Momma out before something happens because I'm getting in one way or the other." There is a suspect in the incidents.

Counterfeit bill reported

Cindy Crumbley reported to Capt. Scott Lamb on Thursday that a male customer attempted to pass a counterfeit $5 bill at the West End Exxon Station.

Television checked out of room

Mike Patel, owner of Parkway Inn, 766 Cosby Highway, reported the theft of a $300 television from one of the motel's rooms. Patrol Officer Matt Franklin is investigating.

Speeding results in arrest

Lt. Terry Lawson charged Celia Lashea Lane, 23, 1208 Fine Street, Newport, with second offense driving on a suspended license on Thursday. According to Lawson's report, he clocked Lane's vehicle at 31 mph in a 15 mph school zone on Beech Street. According to Lawson, when Lane could not produce a driver's license, he learned that her license had been suspended and that she had been cited for driving on a suspended license on June 8, 2009.

Charge placed

Jimmy Lee Daniels, 2122 Gregg's Lane, Newport, was charged with theft under $500 after a loss prevention officer observed him placing two sweatshirts valued at $0 in the front of his pants and attempting to leave a local store without paying for the items.

Dyke charged

Kristi R. Dyke, 24, 1103 Ten Point Lane, Sevierville, faces charges of first offense DUI and driving on a suspended license following her arrest by Capt. Brad Ball on Thursday. Results from a blood test are pending.

Walking to California

On Wednesday, Patrol Officer William Garber responded to a report of a man lying on the ground next to the drive-thru of a local fast food restaurant. Upon his arrival, Garber found Sammy Sparks, 54, sitting at a nearby picnic table. Garber said Sparks admitted to having drunk "some alcohol the night before" and said that he was "walking to California." Sparks was charged with public intoxication.

Shopper arrested

Carolyn A. Hall, 47, 103 Boone Road, Newport, was charged with theft under $500 by Patrol Officer Matthew Elliott on Friday. The charge resulted after a local store's assistant manager said she observed Hall placing a pair of Air Walk shoes in her purse. The shoes are valued at $29.98.

Driver charged

Patrol Officer Matthew Elliott charged Christopher C. Black, 25, 2322 Allen Chapel Road, Parrottsville, with public intoxication on Friday. Black was charged after police were dispatched to Smithwood Drive concerning an intoxicated driver. A motorist behind Black reportedly got his keys from him to prevent him from driving away.

ACCIDENTS

Parking lot mishap

On Friday, as Roger A. Tikkanen, 3032 Seay Way, Dandridge, attempted to back a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt from the service bay at Stinnett Chevrolet, his vehicle was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Rodeo operated by Monica Michelle Denton, 1253 Fox Chase Road, Newport. According to a report filed by Patrol Officer Robby McMahan, Denton said she did not see the Tikkanen vehicle.

Lane change collision

On Friday, as Jeanette M. Blackwell, 73, 580 Breeze Drive, and Jonathan N. Horner, 68, 118 Forest Lake Way, were operating their vehicles east on Highway 25/70, Blackwell attempted to change lanes. In doing so, according to Patrol Officer Robby McMahan, her 2001 Chevrolet Lumina struck Horner's 2005 Toyota, causing damage to both vehicles.
 

Wet roads result in accident

On Monday, Sept. 7, Deputy Hollis Emmons reported a two-car accident on Big Creek Road near its intersection with Mill Creek Road. According to Emmons, the accident occurred when a 2002 Honda Accord, driven by Lori N. Merritt, 26, 1318 Shady Rest Drive, Newport, lost traction while negotiating a curve and slid into the path of a 1992 Honda Accord operated by Phillip R. Bryant, 29, 2381 Green Road, Cosby, and owned by Deannie R. Bryant, same address. Passengers in the Bryant car included Deannie R. Bryant, 28, Joseph Bryant, 5, and Carter Lovin, age 10 months.

Vehicle flips on I-40

Carroll V. Singleton, 62, 1182 Stevens Creek Road, Waynesville, NC, apparently suffered no injuries in a one-vehicle accident on I-40 on Tuesday, Sept. 8. According to Deputy Tony Bailey, Singleton said that as he operated his 1999 Ford Ranger west on I-40, he became dizzy and started to exit the roadway. In doing so, his vehicle's tires dropped off the ramp and when Singleton overcorrected, the vehicle went out of control and flipped before coming to rest on an embankment.
