NEWPORT-Cocke County Road Superintendent John Holloway's
driving woes continue.
According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Jarrett W.
Ramsey, Holloway was involved in a single-vehicle accident at 4:49 p.m. on
Saturday.
The accident report, filed by Trooper Randy Spurgeon,
states that Holloway was alone when the right front wheel of the 2000 Ford
F-350 pick-up truck he was driving dropped off Huff Hollow Road into a ditch
line.
"Mr. Holloway was attempting to turn into a private
driveway at the time of the accident," Ramsey said.
At the time of the accident, Holloway was pulling a
trailer which carried a lawn mower. The mower rolled into the truck's tailgate
and inflicted damage, according to the report.
Spurgeon's report also states that Holloway "had
been drinking" and that there was "a presence of alcohol."
Holloway, according to the report, refused to submit to
drug and alcohol tests.
Charges are pending, according to Spurgeon's report.
Last month, Holloway entered guilty pleas to two driving
under the influence (DUI) charges and was placed on two years of probation by
Cocke County Criminal Court Judge Rex Henry Ogle for two previous incidents.
Ogle accepted Holloway's plea-bargain, but cautioned the
defendant that, even though he pled guilty to two counts of first-offense DUI,
if he is arrested again for drunk driving, the state could choose to charge him
as a third-offender and the penalties would be greater.
"I hope that doesn't happen," Holloway said.
"So do I," Judge Ogle said. "But I wanted
to be sure you understand that."
Authorities reported in August 2008 that Holloway was
westbound on I-40 and was exiting onto Highway 25/70 at the 432 Exit when the
Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving slid on gravel lining the side of the cloverleaf
exit ramp.
A test taken after the first incident showed that
Holloway had a .27 percent blood/alcohol content.
Holloway was arrested again this past February 20 by
Newport Police after a traffic accident on Cosby. Holloway allegedly drove his
Chevrolet pickup through the McDonald's restaurant parking lot and struck the
rear of a Cosby resident's Nissan Maxima. The vehicle then left the parking
area, struck a mailbox, and traveled onto the curb and through a flower bed
before knocking down a concrete safety post, police reported.
Holloway was found at the Cosby Highway Exxon station
"in a heavily intoxicated state," according to investigators.
