Sheriff's Department Reports


Domestic assault arrest
Peggy Toby, 45, of 125 Stinson Road, in Newport, was arrested Friday, June 19, and charged with domestic assault after a relative was allegedly found with scratch marks on their neck, according to a report by Lt. Robert Caldwell.

Public intoxication arrest
Harold Lee Ebbs, 43, of 87 Walnut St., in Hot Springs, N.C., was arrested this morning and charged with public intoxication after Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson was allegedly walking down the middle of East Highway 25/70 near the Barbarosa. Ebbs allegedly told Johnson he had drunk eight beers.

Domestic assault and animal cruelty charges in arrest
Christopher A. McFalls, 20, of 893 Overhold Road, in Newport, was arrested Saturday, June 20, at about 3:30 a.m. after officers responded to an emergency call. The victim allegedly was crying and said McFalls became angry and punched the victim in the face. McFalls allegedly had a cut on his right knuckle. There was "a large amount blood" on the kitchen floor and the victim reportedly had severe swelling on the left side of their face. The victim said McFalls threatened to kill a small puppy and during their fight picked the dog up and threw it against a wall, according to a report by Sgt. Armando Fontes.

Domestic assault and vandalism over $500 charged in arrest
Bentley Collins, 38, was arrested Sunday, June 21, around 2 a.m. and charged with domestic assault and vandalism over $500 in connection to an altercation at his residence and damage done to the passenger side window of a vehicle, as well as to the paint on the vehicle, according to a report by Sgt. Armando Fontes.

Failure to appear charge and arrest
Cindy D. Hembree, 29, of 918 Chicken Hollow Road, in Newport, was arrested Saturday, June 20, and charged with failure to appear, according to a report by Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons. Officers allegedly went to 1986 Good Hope Road in Parrottsville to serve warrants on two people. Hembree was allegedly found in a back bedroom in bed, according to Emmons' report. Teresa Shelton, 28, of 1986 Good Hope Road, in Parrottsville, was arrested and charged with violation of probation and an order of attachment for evading service. A third person was arrested, as well.

Washer, dryer, jewelry reported stolen
Melissa Gregg, 43, of Netty Mountain Road, in Del Rio, told Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Tuesday, June 16, during the day, someone entered her residence, vandalized every room, and took several items worth $3,235. Bailey's report said a Frigidaire washer and dryer, each worth $500, were stolen, as were titles to vehicles, old gold dollar coins, and many pieces of jewelry.

Two shoplifting charges in arrest
William Carter, 37, of 427 Rock Town Road, in Jefferson City, was arrested Monday, June 22, at about 9 p.m. at Walmart on the Cosby Highway and charged with two counts of theft under $500. Loss Prevention officers at the store allegedly told Patrolman Jason Hensley that Carter took a 19-inch Sansui TV valued at $178 on Sunday, June 21, and on Monday, June 22, he took an Innova diagnostics tool valued at $98.73.

Public intoxication charge and arrest
Roger D. Dalton, 45, of 439 Duncan St., in Newport, was arrested today at about 2 a.m. and charged with public intoxication after he allegedly told officers he had been assaulted and wanted officers to search for the offenders. Patrolman Jason Hensley wrote in a report that Dalton became "very aggressive and belligerent with officers" and screamed while standing in the middle of the street. Dalton allegedly had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and was very unsteady on his feet.

Dispatch to collision results in arrest
Jennifer Yates, 27, of 514 Paint Brush Way, in Newport, was arrested Monday, June 22, on Highway East 25/70 and charged with driving on a suspended license and violation of financial responsibility after police were dispatched to a collision with injuries, according to a report by Patrolman Amy Elswick. Yates reportedly told officers she did not have a license. A check with dispatch allegedly showed Yates was suspended for failure to satisfy a citation and failure to provide evidence of financial responsibility on Dec. 2, 2007. Yates also allegedly could not provide proof of insurance for the vehicle involved in the June 22 collision. (More information on the collision is available in the next news brief.)

Accident on East Broadway results in one injury
Joseph R. Hill, 55, of 620 Runnion St., in Newport, was allegedly traveling west on East Highway 25/70 on Monday, June 22, around 9:10 p.m. and stopped to make a left turn to go south on Highway 73. A 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Jennifer Yates, 27, of 514 Paintbrush Road, in Newport, was allegedly traveling west on East Highway 25/70. Her vehicle reportedly made contact with the rear bumper of the Ford Ranger, according to a report by Patrolman Amy Elswick.

'T-bone collision' on Cosby Highway results in one injured
Jackie S. Brooks, 46, of 483 Wine Road, in Dandridge, was reportedly driving a 2006 Mercury Milan on Thursday, June 18, about 3:30 p.m. and pulled out from the Arby's restaurant parking lot on the Cosby Highway near Sequoia Avenue and into the path of a 2006 Ford Taurus driven by Marjorie Minor, 73, of 558 South Cecil St., in Newport, that hit the passenger side of the Mercury Milan. Minor was allegedly trying to enter the center turn lane on Cosby Highway and unable to avoid the collision, according to a report by Patrolman David R. Smith.

Identity theft alleged
Patricia Diane Davis, 58, of Dykes Street, in Newport, told officers on Monday, June 22 that when she went into the Lucky Pawn Shop, she was approached by an employee who claimed she had written a bad check. Davis reportedly provide documentation to prove she was not the same Diane Davis that wrote the bad check, according to a report by Patrolman William Garber.

Texting abuse reported
Joseph Jacobs, 30, of Denton Road, in Cosby, told Patrolman Allen Stump on Monday, June 22, that an individual was "trying to cause trouble" and had texted him "all evening" even after he asked the person to stop.

Citation issued in alleged shoplifting at Walmart
James Scott Hall, 33, of 482 Overlook Way, in Newport, was issued a citation for theft under $500 after he alleged tried to steal items from Walmart on Monday, June 22, according to a report by Patrolman Jason Hensley. Hall reportedly attempted to steal Drakkar cologne (worth $42), Kenneth Cole cologne ($46), a shaving razor ($9.94), four key chains ($3.44), and replacement blades ($25.94, according to Hensley's report.

Two-vehicle accident at US Bank
Darlene Shults, 60, of Wildwood Road, in Cosby, was allegedly headed through the drive-through at US Bank on East Broadway on Wednesday, June 3, in a 2007 Dodge Caravan, and was struck in the rear by a 2004 Ford Ranger driven by Louise B. Larger, 59, of Upper Bison Way, in Cosby after Larger allegedly let her foot slip off the brake, according to a report by Patrolman David R. Smith.
