Police Reports

Self-inflicted gunshot wound
Dallas Glenn, 40, of 310 Buda St., in Newport, was allegedly found by officers late Saturday night, June 13, outside his residence in the middle of Buda Street bleeding from his left hand.  According to witnesses, Glenn had been drinking "all day long" and gone to a neighbor's house. The neighbor alleged Glenn pushed him to the ground when he attempted to take keys to a vehicle. The neighbor said Glenn entered his truck and tried to leave, but backed over an embankment. Glenn then allegedly exited the truck and went to his residence at 310 Buda Street and entered a bedroom where four individuals were asleep. According to a report by Capt. Scott Lamb of the Newport Police Department, one witness told police Glenn attempted to draw his gun from his waist band and shot himself in his ring finger instead. The bullet allegedly grazed Glenn's stomach, also. Police found the spent round from the bedroom floor and also recovered part of Glenn's finger, which was handed to Allied EMS. Glenn was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by a Wings helicopter, according to the report.

Child neglect/abuse alleged
A four-year-old boy who lives on Bent Way allegedly showed up at a man's porch at 122 Melton Road on Saturday, June 13. Newport police responded to a call and when they arrived, the boy allegedly said he was trying to go to Sonic Drive-In to get some food because he was hungry, according to a report by Capt. Brad Ball of the Newport Police Department. Ball then drove the boy around the neighboring streets in an attempt to help him return home. The boy recognized his home on Bent Way and immediately made his way up onto the porch and waited by the door. Police knocked, and again very loudly in an attempt to have someone open the door of the residence. Finally, after waiting, the boy opened to the door to his home and went to wake his mother so police could speak with her. Her alleged live-in boyfriend stated he and the mother had been asleep, and the boy should have been, also. It was 11:35 a.m., according to the report. The mother also said the boy shouldn't have left the home. She was told a four-year-old boy is not responsible for himself, and she or another adult she designated was responsible for him. The mother was counseled on how to relay the lesson to her son so it would not happen again, and was also given safety tips to prevent the boy from wandering off again. Police made a referral to the Department of Children's Services. The mother was allegedly cited into court for child neglect/abuse and informed DCS would be contacting her.
