Driver injured in car
accident Michael L. Marshburn, 30, of 484 Apple Court Drive, in Newport, was allegedly driving a
2005 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck on Wednesday, June 10, headed west on Crum Hollow Road near Arlis
Way when he failed to make a curve in the road, went off the right side of the road, struck a tree,
and came to rest off Crum Hollow Road, facing west. According to a report on the accident by Cocke
County Deputy Sheriff Timothy N. Snapp, Marshburn was taken by ambulance to an unnamed
hospital.
Vehicle and dirt bike accident on private road A 2007 Chevrolet driven by Margie
Lantz, 72, of 430 Cedar Glen Way, in Bybee, collided with a 1994 Honda dirt bike driven by Tyler
Trivett, 17, of 175 Circle Drive, in Gray, on Lantz' private drive at the top of a hillcrest in a
curve. In the Sunday, June 7 accident, the Chevrolet received minor damages to its front end.
Trivett allegedly "laid down" the dirt bike and slid under the front end of the
Chevrolet.
Infant passenger apparently uninjured in car accident Charity L. Jackson, 22,
of 1385 Dunn Cemetery Road, in Newport, was allegedly traveling east on New Cove Church Road on
Wednesday, June 10, about 2:30 p.m. in a 1985 Toyota pickup truck with an unnamed infant passenger
in the vehicle when the passenger side front tire went off the road into a culvert, according to a
report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury. Jackson was reportedly taken to Baptist Hospital
of Cocke County for an evaluation. The infant was transported by family members to the hospital, as
well, to be evaluated, the report stated.
Vandalism in Walmart parking lot reported Shelia
Denton, 59, of 510 McGaha Chapel Road, told Sgt. David Crum of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department
that on Thursday, June 6, vandals attempted to steal her Pioneer car stereo from her 1991 Toyota
pickup truck she parked in the Walmart parking lot. While she was in the store, vandals allegedly
took the face plate off of the vehicle's radio and attempted to remove the unit, but were
unsuccessful in doing so.
Break-in, theft reported Edward Nowak, 71, of Nightingale Lane,
in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Thursday, June 4, or Saturday, June
5, someone broke a hasp off an outbuilding on his property and stole several items. Those items and
their value were: a Campbell air compressor ($300), four air nozzles and gauges ($30), a metal
wheelbarrow ($60), and a 10-foot extension ladder ($80). The hasp was valued at $10.
Assault
alleged Nikki Garver, 29, of Ray Street, stated that when she went to a residence on Fox Chase
Road, she was assaulted by an individual who allegedly threw a drink on her and tried to grab her by
the hair of her head, stated a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson.
Assault
allegedly threatened Michael Lynn Blevins, 34, of Liberty Road, said an individual that Blevins
owes a $100 car payment pulled into his driveway while Blevins was weed eating, on May 28,
brandished half of a pool cue and threatened to beat him up every time he saw him until Blevins made
the car payment, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury.
Vandalism
of Family Inn West reported Sharon Vancuren, the manager of Family Inn West at 1311 West Highway
25/70, in Newport, said $750 of damage to a room occurred after it was allegedly occupied by five
people the night of Thursday, June 4, a report from Cocke County Deputy Jason Oury stated. Vancuren
said Matthew McGaha, 21, of 265 Clear Creek Road, rented room 123. She said cleaning employees who
showed up the next day found a Welbilt microwave and refrigerator gone, and "significant" damage
done to the bathroom's drywall and plumbing, according to Oury's report. McGaha reportedly brought
the microwave and refrigerator back to Vancuren. The manager said the refrigerator's power cord was
cut in half and could not be used anymore. McGaha stated he was not responsible for the damaged
property, and that the four people he said he left behind in the room at about 2 a.m. may have
caused the damage. McGaha reportedly agreed to pay for the damage, and paid Vancuren $250 while the
deputy sheriff was present, and agreed to pay the balance of $500. Vancuren banned McGaha from the
property, according to the report.
Several items allegedly stolen from Toyota
4-Runner Augustine Kelly, 48, of Marshall Drive, in Bybee, said that between 9 p.m. on Thursday,
June 4, and 8 a.m. on Friday, June 5, someone entered her unlocked, parked Toyota 4-runner and stole
some items from it, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey. Kelly told the
deputy sheriff that items stolen were: a Black & Decker tool box (worth $30), a hitch ($25),
jumper cables ($25), a First-Aid kit ($7), some Craftsmen tools ($6), a poncho (#), flashlight
($15), and one roll of paper towels ($1), the report stated.
Two-vehicle accident on Peace
Pagoda Way Konomu Utsumi, 57, of 1878 Peace Pagoda Way, in Newport, was allegedly backing on to
Peace Pagoda Way and did not see a 2000 Ford Focus driven by Megan M. Johnson, 16, of 111 Mobile
Way, in Parrottsville. Utsumi allegedly said he did not see the Ford Focus, which he hit on the
driver's side of the front fender, according to a report by Sgt. Ricky Holt of the Cocke County
Sheriff's Department. Johnson reportedly said she had stopped in the road to allow Utsumi to back
out his vehicle.
Curious case of missing boat Tony L. Marshall, 37, of Marshall Way, in
Dandridge, allegedly left a boat to be re-upholstered at the residence of an individual on Highway
25 East. When Marshall returned days later to pick up the boat, the individual allegedly told him
"some detectives came and took the boat," implying the boat was stolen and someone recovered it,
according to a report by Lt. Jonathan Morgan of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. However,
Marshall allegedly produced "sufficient evidence" to the officer to support his statement that he is
the sole owner of the boat.
Aggravated burglary alleged Ivan Hurley, 92, of Rank Hill
Road, in Newport, alleged that on Saturday, June 6, while he and his wife Thelma were asleep in
their home, and after two grandsons had left, he found stolen $1,200-$1,500 in cash, according to a
report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Hollis Emmons. The residence was allegedly entered through a
basement window that was forced open. Other items reported stolen was medication valued at $60,
three Barlow pocket knives worth $15, and three Old Timer pocket knives valued at $30.
Two
items reported stolen from shed Debbie Murray, 56, of Ridge Walk Road, in Newport, reported that
when she returned from out of town on Tuesday, June 9, after being gone six days, she went out to
her shed and found stolen a Honda generator valued at $1,000, and an Earthquake E43 Earth Auger
power head worth $400, according to a Cocke County Sheriff's Department report.
Aggravated
assault on Saint Tide Road alleged David Wilson, 44, of 877 Saint Tide Road, in Newport, told
officers he was headed home when he allegedly found his brother, Jackie Wilson, 48, of 733 Saint
Tide, standing in the road. David Wilson said that Jackie Wilson struck him in the head with some
type of object, and the two fought. Jackie Wilson allegedly fell on top of David Wilson and possibly
broke David Wilson's leg, and also inflicted head and arm injuries to Wilson. Jackie Wilson was
arrested for aggravated assault, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey.
David Wilson was taken to the emergency room of Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. In another report,
Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Timothy N. Snapp stated that officials with the Department of Children's
Services advised David Wilson to file a false report complaint against his brother for false
allegations he allegedly made about David Wilson to DCS.
Vandalism alleged Frank Cuff, 23,
of 115 Covered Bridge Way, in Newport, alleged that a relative came to his residence on Tuesday,
June 9, and busted out the rear window of his vehicle, a 1988 Acura Legend, according to a report
written by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt. Cuff valued the window at $400.
Theft
while moving to new residence alleged Thomas Raleigh, 39, of 331 Cambridge Drive, in Newport,
alleged that someone pried open the door to the front of his trailer while he was moving from one
residence to another one, and stole various items, according to a report by Sgt. David Crum of the
Cocke County Sheriff's Department. Raleigh reported stolen a Hewlett-Packard mini laptop computer,
valued at $1,000; a Compac desktop computer, worth $500; a BB gun with a scope ($50); a
Hewlett-Packard scanner ($100); and a "shock box" for his back ($700).
Theft alleged Nancy
Franklin, 66, of 1751 Bullard Drive, in Newport, stated that on Friday, June 5, a former relative
stole $300 of various old gold coins, state quarters, and silver dollars, according to a report by
Lt. Rick Laws of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.
Fraudulent use of debit card
alleged McMinn County Detective Mike Hayes reportedly called the Cocke County Sheriff's
Department and stated someone on May 14 made an unauthorized purchase of $5.26 using a debit card
belonging to Danny Stimmie, who allegedly has been in the McMinn County jail since May 2, according
to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Crowder. The transaction apparently took place at
the Exxon E-Z Stop Market #19 in Newport. The store manager allegedly showed a record of the
transaction to the investigating deputy sheriff.
Theft from vehicle alleged Bryan
Williams, 18, of Newport, alleged that on Tuesday, June 9, someone took his PlayStation Player and
car charger out of his vehicle. The items were subsequently pawned by an individual at C8C Pawn
Shop, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Parton.
Juvenile allegedly
forced to smoke pot A 16-year-old resident of Newport alleged that on Tuesday, May 9, she was at
a residence on Elana Lane when a group of unidentified people began to smoke marijuana. She
reportedly declined an offer from a woman in the group to smoke some of the marijuana. The juvenile
was allegedly then told she could not leave until she tried the drug. The victim said she then did
smoke the marijuana and left for a friend's residence, according to a report by investigating
officer Derrick Webb of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.
Glass doors reported
stolen Lynn Mantooth, 61, of Goodwater Road, alleged that when he returned to his home on
Saturday, June 6, he noticed that someone had pried a hasp off of a door to an outbuilding and
stolen four glass doors that he valued at $400, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff
Tony Bailey.
Fourteen-foot trailer reported stolen Robert Tyer, 45, of Green Cove Springs,
Fl., reported that either on Thursday, June 4, or Friday, June 5, someone took his 14-foot trailer
from his property on Bible Way, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury. The
trailer was described as black and gray with a two-inch ball hitch. It also has a six-foot gap in
the trailer railing on the right front section and had a Florida license plate. Tyer estimated the
trailer to be worth $800.
Vandalism reported Franklin H. Wilhelm, 52, of 711 Lusonic
Circle, in Newport, alleged on Sunday, June 7 that he found his food trailer had been shot with a
paint ball gun or a pellet gun on the left and right sides, according to a report by Cocke County
Deputy Sheriff Joseph Owings. The trailer was valued at $5,000.
Boyfriend allegedly choked
girlfriend A 23-year-old resident on Irish Cut Road alleged that on May 15 her boyfriend came
home and started a verbal argument that led to him grabbing her by the throat, choking her, and then
pushing her back. He then allegedly left the residence and she stated she was afraid he would return
later and hurt her again, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony
Bailey.
Domestic assault charged Christopher Toby, 31, of 2483 Fowlers Road, in Bybee, was
charged with domestic assault on Tuesday, June 9, after officers arrived and allegedly found his
ex-wife, Susan Toby, crying. She allegedly said her ex-husband had choked her around the neck and
held her down on the floor. Officers found "a lot" of red marks all around her neck and a bruise on
one of her arms. A witness stated Christopher Toby had indeed been choking Susan Toby on the floor,
according to a report by Lt. Rick Laws and David Parton of the Cocke County Sheriff's
Department.
Assault and threats alleged Roger Horton Sr., 57, of Big Creek Road, alleged
that an individual threatened to cut the new tires on his vehicle and hit him in the right side jaw
after an all-day argument. When he got into his vehicle, the individual allegedly threatened, "I'll
cut your tires and I will kill you." Horton then left and called 911 at the Hartford post office,
according to a report by Randall Hartsell of the Cocke County Sheriff's
Department.
Possession of marijuana charged in arrest Larry C. Brady, 21, of 3106 Point
Pleasant Road, in Bybee, was arrested Wednesday, June 3, and charged with possession Schedule V
(marijuana) after officers responded to investigate a domestic disturbance call, according to a
report by Sgt. Eric Rinehart of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. Brady allegedly admitted
that a clear, plastic baggy with a green, leafy substance inside believed to be marijuana lying in
the living room near a wallet was his.
Theft over $1,000 Bobby Owenby, 73, of Ransom
Circle, in Newport, alleged that on Tuesday, June 9, at 7 a.m., he discovered several items stolen
from one of his boats, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Crowder. The items
and their value were reported as follows: 42 fishing reels ($840), six fishing rods with reels
($250), a speaker ($15), BB gun ($35), and tackle box ($175).
Handgun reported
stolen Andrew Rathbone, 17, of Blueberry Way, alleged that a .38 special handgun was stolen from
his residence, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell. Rathbone said
he discovered the handgun was stolen on Wednesday, June 10. The handgun was valued at
$450.
