Lock box and contents reported stolen
Candida Barrett, 33, of 106 Keystone Way, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Crowder that on Wednesday, May 20, she returned home to find her lock box and its contents missing. Items stolen included medicine, two birth certificates, check stubs, and mortgage payment papers.

Vandalism alleged
Bill Hamrick, 68, of 1778 Boone Drive, in Newport, told Lt. Rick Laws of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that sometime between 4 and 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, someone stole a fire extinguisher from a trailer and sprayed his neighbor's mailbox, as well as the road, with it.

Social security cards allegedly stolen
David Gayton, 31, of 589-4 Wells Drive, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb that on Thursday, May 21, while he was at a dentist's office on Cosby Highway, someone stole his sons' social security cards from the back of his car.

Identity theft alleged
Roger Dale Parks, 73, of Highway 411, in Newport, told Sgt. David Crum of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that since 1996, he has been "harassed" with phone calls from people, including an attorney from the firm of J.C. Christensen and Associates, to pay a Sears credit card bill now in the amount of $882.49, according to Crum's report. Parks told Crum on Thursday, May 21, he has never had a Sears credit card and has been on the road as a truck driver since 1983.

Son's dog allegedly attacked by pit bull
Samuel Nichols, 26, of 207 New Hope Road, in Jonesborough, told Lt. Rick Laws of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Monday, May 18, around 12:05 a pit bull came on his porch and attacked the pet Scottie Schnauzer belonging to his son, Samuel Nichols. The father said the dog was severely injured, taken to Five Rivers Animal emergency hospital in Talbott and on the next day to Appalachian Animal Clinic where surgery was performed on the dog. The bill was a total of $595.50 from both clinics and several more follow-up trips are expected, according to the father.

Verbal harassment alleged
Kenneth Hartsell, 50, of 844 Chicken Hollow Road, told Sgt. David Crum of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department, that on Wednesday, May 20, he was sitting on his porch when an individual on a motorcycle drove by and cursed him at length. Hartsell said harassment from the individual has been going on since Christmas 2008.

Two-vehicle accident on East Highway 25/70
Garrett S. Ricker, 19, of 1142 North Highway 107, in Greeneville, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb that on Wednesday, May 20, he was traveling east on Highway 25/70 near Pig Trot Road in a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier when he attempted to pass a 1993 Jeep driven by Michael W. Paterson, 29, of 4263 Lindsay Gap Road, in Cosby. Ricker alleged that Patterson did not use a turn signal and cut left into his path as Ricker attempted to pass Patterson. Patterson claimed he did have a left turn signal on. One witness said Patterson had his turn signal on, and another witness stated that he did not.

Two-vehicle accident on Lindsey Gap Road
Whitney T. Hannah, 20, of 124 Nightingale Lane, in Newport, was on Thursday,  May 21, around noon, traveling east on Lindsey Gap Road in a Toyota Takoma pickup truck when the vehicle collided with a 1996 Honda Accord headed in the opposite direction and driven by Sparkle Jones-Watts, 32, of 311 Tanasi Drive, in Newport, in a narrow blind curve. The Toyota pickup truck's left rear tire apparently collided with the Honda Accord's front bumper on the driver's side, causing damage, according to a report from Sgt. Eric Rinehart of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. No injuries were reported.

Hit-and-run alleged
Charlotte M. Price, 65, of 3415 Baker Springs Road, in White Pine, was on Thursday, May 21, around 2:20 p.m., driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer headed south on Bogard Road when, while allegedly negotiating a curve, she saw a white truck on her side of the road. Price said she swerved to the right to try to avoid a collision, but was sideswiped by the truck, which continued on Bogard Road, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Crowder.

Hit-and-run on Irish Cut Road alleged
Mary L. Hembree, 43, of 337 Leaf Way, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb that on Thursday, May 21, around 10 p.m., she was in Dodge van traveling south on Irish Cut when a black Honda with no tags allegedly ran her off the road. Hembree said she sideswiped a tree, causing damage to her vehicle.

Domestic assault charge and arrest
Carl Junior Haney, 59, of Cocke County Estates, in Newport, was arrested Thursday, May 21, by Patrolman Ricky Parton and charged with domestic assault. Officers allegedly responded to a domestic assault report at Newport Terrace Apartments. His daughter, Della Haney, told Parton she earlier went to her dad's house to pick him up because he and his wife were arguing. A witness said they heard Della Haney and Carl Haney arguing and saw Carl shove her into the door and hit her in the face.

Two charges related to shoplifting
Nicholas Dannon Boswell, 42, of 435 North St., in Newport was arrested Thursday, May 21, and charged with criminal trespassing and theft under $500. A Walmart employee allegedly saw Boswell conceal four packs of steaks worth $61.38 in his pants and attempt to leave the store. He had also allegedly been advised not to be on Walmart premises.

License plate allegedly stolen
Fernando J. Pineiro, 33, of 122 Five Rivers Plaza Way, in Newport, told the Newport Police Department that on Thursday, May 21, he left his 1997 Honda Accord at Fred's parking lot in the morning and when he returned in the afternoon, he noticed his license plate was missing from the vehicle.

Man found dead on Harper Circle
Joe Dean Barton, 56, of 406 Harper Circle, in Newport, was allegedly found dead and slumped over on the couch by an acquaintance on Thursday, May 21. An initial investigation by the Newport Police Department allegedly revealed no signs of foul play and nothing appeared disturbed in his residence. A neighbor said that on the night previous to the discovery of Barton, around 9 p.m., when they came to check on Barton, he was sleeping peaceably in bed. Police determined Barton was on numerous medications and a constant flow of oxygen.

A total of 160 checks allegedly stolen
Charles Gregg, 61, of Front Street, in Newport, told Patrolman Billy Woody on Thursday, May 21, that someone stole 160 checks from his checkbooks. He said the National Bank of Tennessee had mailed him several returned checks.

Cash theft alleged
Melanie Buttry, 28, of 1821 Junior Williams Road, in Dandridge, said that on Wednesday, May 20, around 4:45 p.m., she and her mother, Loretta Pirkle, were in a vehicle headed down Woodlawn Avenue in front of Freddy's Bar when a man approached her vehicle, jerked $30 out of her hand, and ran off, according to a report by Patrolman William Garber.

Public intoxication arrest at the Relax Inn
Betty Royster, 56, of 5227 Downing Creek Road, in Charlotte, N.C., was arrested Friday, May 22, and charged with public intoxication. Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb wrote in a report that Royster ignored verbal commands to step away from a vehicle at the Relax Inn. 911 had several complaints of a female yelling and disturbing the peace. Royster allegedly also had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person, as well as bloodshot eyes.

Public intoxication arrest on Highway 160
Billy F. Caudill was allegedly found passed out at 2665 Highway 160, arrested, and charged with public intoxication. Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Derrick Webb said several empty beer cans were lying beside Caudill. After Webb woke Caudill up, he became belligerent and started cursing. The report said Caudill had bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from his person.

Two-vehicle accident on Highway 321
Monty W. Neas, 46, of 356 Ottinger Road, in Parrottsville, was traveling south on Highway 321 on Wednesday, May 20, around 3:45 p.m. in a 2003 Dodge Caravan and came to a stop because of a disabled car sitting across the south bound lane of the highway, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Timothy N. Snapp. A 1997 Honda Civic driven by Paul J. Wines, 65, of 1441 Highway 321, in Parrottsville, was also headed south on Highway 321 behind Neas's vehicle. According to the report, Wines applied the brakes to his vehicle, began skidding, and collided with the Dodge Caravan. The disabled vehicle was not involved in the collision.

Damage to vehicle
Johnny Costner, of 4549 Hot Shot Way, in Cosby, told Patrolman Justin Vinson that on Wednesday, May 20, he parked his vehicle in the World Finance parking lot, went inside to conduct business, and after he drove home he found damage to the vehicle.

Public intoxication arrest at Match Box Lounge
Ralph Talton was arrested in the parking lot of the Match Box Lounge, at 310 East Main St., in Newport, and charged with public intoxication, according to a the Newport Police Department. The police were called on a report of an intoxicated man passed out in the parking lot. An officer who made contact with Talton found him to be highly intoxicated. In addition, Talton had a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and could not stand on his own.

Push lawn mower allegedly stolen
Jim Yocom, 39, of 10th Street Annex, in Newport, told Patrolman Donald Coakley that when he returned to his home on Friday, May 22, he discovered that a push lawn mower sitting against his house was missing. It was valued at $150.

Wallet stolen
Lonnie Howard, of Sevierville, said on Thursday, My 21 at about 2:20 p.m. he accidentally left his wallet at the checkout register at Save-A-Lot at 1043 Cosby Highway. Howard told Patrolman Justin Vinson that when he got home, he noticed the wallet was missing. The manager of the store later had Howard view a video of when the wallet was left at the checkout register. A white, middle-aged man reportedly could be seen sliding the wallet into his pocket, and did not return it. The wallet allegedly contained a social security card, driver's license, and $35.

Two soda machines reported burglarized
David Brockwell at Movie Time, located at 150 E. Broadway, in Newport, reported to Patrolman Donna Hopkins, that sometime between Thursday, May 21, at 10 p.m. and Friday, May 22, at 7 a.m., someone broke into a Pepsi machine in the parking lot and removed an estimated $30-$40 in change. Hopkins reported that nearby, a Coke machine outside Gilland's Auto had also been broken into during the same time period.

Theft of medication alleged
Linda Watts at Jabo's Pharmacy told Patrolman Donald Coakley that on Friday, May 22, around 11:25 a.m., a female called and asked if medication for Don Stewart of Musterfield Road was ready and how much it cost. A few minutes later, an unknown female without Stewart's authorization came in, paid for, and signed for the medication. A few minutes later, Stewart came into Jabo's Pharmacy and discovered the alleged theft. The medicine was valued at $59.92.

Counterfeit bill passed
An individual allegedly cashed a check from Maxwell Steak & Seafood for $777.62 at the National Bank of Tennessee branch inside Walmart on Friday, May 22, at 11 a.m. The person then made a house payment of approximately $780, and then went through the checkout line, still inside Walmart. The cashier took a $20 bill from the individual to the bank's branch and was notified it was counterfeit. The person went to the bank and insisted it was part of the money given to him when he cashed his check. The bank replaced the $20 bill, and the individual left, according to Patrolman Donna Hopkins.

Public intoxication arrest in bank parking lot
Louis Tomas Garsia, 26, of 222 Blide Way #49, in White Pine, was allegedly found passed out in his vehicle in the parking lot of Newport Federal on Cosby Highway, arrested, and charged with public intoxication, according to a report by Patrolman Matthew Elliott. Garsia allegedly had a very strong odor of alcohol about his person, had used the bathroom on himself, threw up twice on the scene before he could be transported, and couldn't stand on his feet on his own power. Garsia allegedly told Elliott he had drunk five or six beers.

Citation for shoplifting
April Owenby, 30, of 580 Bonanza Drive, in Newport, was allegedly apprehended while attempting to exit Walmart after concealing in her purse two nighties valued at $15 each and one men's pajama bottom valued at $10, on Friday, May 22, at 7 p.m., according to a report by Patrolman Heather Lawson.
