Sheriff's

Assault alleged
Jacqueline Hall, 18, of Mulberry Street, said an acquaintance started a verbal and physical assault on her when she was at a friend's residence. Hall said he punched her in the face "numerous" times, according to a report by C.J. Ball of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. During the fight, the acquaintance allegedly struck a four-month-old baby in the head while pushing an individual out of the way to get to Hall. He left before officers arrived.

Three charges in arrest
Roger L. Arnold, 20, of 115 Whipperwill Way, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, May 19, around 11:30 p.m. on Carson Springs Road in Newport and charged with 2nd offense DUI, simple possession of marijuana, and open container. Sgt. Armando Fontes of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department wrote in a report that after he stopped Arnold, who was driving a 1991 Chevy Silverado, for not having a seat belt. He failed several sobriety tests, and found to have a blood alcohol content of .10. Approximately 2 grams of marijuana was found in the center console in a cigarette pack. Because it was Arnold's second DUI in less than two years, Fontes seized his vehicle.

Arrest in Domestic Assault
Anthony Trejo, 38, of 1064 Sunset Circle, was arrested Wednesday, May 20, after he allegedly punched Sara Antes, 23, of the same address, in the face on her eye, cheek and neck, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Randall Hartsell.

Driving on Revoked 5th offense alleged
Andy Allen Shepherd, 31, of 1206 Cosby Cut-off Road, in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, May 19, and charged with driving on a revoked license 5th offense after Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton stopped Shepherd for going into the fast lane on West Highway 25/70 from the slow lane four times.

Vehicle hits deer
Mary Roberts, 28, of 132 Wale Drive, in Parrottsville, hit a deer on Tuesday, May 19, around 10:30 p.m. while driving a 2007 Chrysler Pontiac, according to a Cocke County Sheriff's Department report. Roberts was not injured.

Two-vehicle collision on Highway 321 South
Stacey L. Mondell, 22, of 274 Seehorn Drive, in Newport, said she was traveling north on Highway 321 South in a 2006 Jeep on Saturday, May 16, about 4 p.m. when Carl E. Williams, 64, of 130 Edwards Way, in Newport, allegedly pulled in front of Mondell in a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup truck, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff David Crowder. Mondell said she swerved to the left to try and avoid the pickup truck, but was hit on the passenger side. Williams said he could not remember what happened, said he was a diabetic, and was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County emergency room. Mondell was injured and also transported to Baptist Hospital.

Forgery, stolen checks alleged
Jason Phillips, a U.S. Marine who lives in Camp Lejeune, N.C., told Lt. Richard Caldwell of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday, May 19, that an individual stole his checkbook and forged his name for a total of about $1,700.

Threatening phone calls alleged
Christina Nichole Brown, 28, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton that on Monday, May 18, an individual called her on her cell phone eight times from a restricted number, stating "she knows where she lives" (and) also making numerous threats on her voicemail, according to Thornton's report.

Assault allegedly ruptured eardrum
Matthew Cvetkovich, 15, of Briarwood Way, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Randy Cutshaw that on Tuesday, May 19, he was walking down the hallway at the Cocke County Vocational School at 210  Hedrick Drive when someone allegedly slapped him on the left ear from behind. His mother allegedly took Cvetkovich to a hospital's emergency room after school and learned that the assault ruptured her son's eardrum.

Harassment, trespassing alleged
Kenneth Hartsell, 50, of Chicken Hollow Road, told the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that from Christmas 2008 to May 20, three individuals have harassed him by letting their dogs run at large in his yard, which allegedly disturbs his chickens and dogs, and that they play a tape of dogs barking loudly which disturbs his rest. Hartsell also alleged that the individuals have trapped foxes and released them onto his property to disturb his chickens, and set small fires around his property to disturb him. Hartsell also alleged they have fired weapons around his property, and disturbed him in other ways.

Arrest on White Oak Street
Barbara A. Dalton, 44, of 434 White Oak St., in Newport, was arrested Tuesday, May 19, on a capias from Circuit Court. She was charged with three counts for sale and delivery of Schedule II drugs, according to a report by Capt. Benny Shelton of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department.

Fraudulent checks allegedly cashed
Cleve Benson Jr., 60, of Trail Hollow Road, told Sgt. David Crum of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Wednesday, May 13, a checkbook was stolen from his 2003 Nissan Altima when it was parked at his home. He said he lost a total of $2,837.45.

Vehicle recovered, but total loss
Det. John Carrell of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department recovered a Chevrolet Blazer for Deborah L. Norton, 44, of Irish Cutt Road, in Newport. Newport Raceway and Auto parts contacted the detective when the Blazer was allegedly towed to the business from Stepp Road. The vehicle was "totally destroyed by fire," however, law enforcement officials identified the vehicle by using a secondary number

Two-vehicle accident in Del Rio
Larry Dale Stanely, 28, of 629 Upper Broad St., in Newport, told the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Wednesday, May 20, about 9 p.m., he was pulling into the driveway at 640 Dry Fork Road, Del Rio, in a 2001 Chevy Silverado, allegedly too fast, making the vehicle slide in the gravel and hit a 1995 Ford F250 owned by Timothy M. Dockery, who lives at the residence.

Two-vehicle accident on South Highway 32
A 1995 Honda driven by Jessica L. Taylor, 27, of 4482 Chavis Road, in Cosby, and a 2005 Pontiac GC7 driven by Teresa L. Ramsey, 31, of 3233 Bluebell Road, in Cosby, were traveling south on South Highway 32 on Wednesday, May 20, when they approached the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 32 and Wilton Springs Road. The Pontiac allegedly did not stop before colliding with the rear of the Honda, causing damage to both vehicles. Taylor was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County. Ramsey was allegedly issued a citation for expired registration.

Assault and vandalism alleged
Kristin Moskalskis, of 766 Thinwood Drive, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Travis Webb that she and an individual were arguing over a washer and dryer when the individual punched several holes in both the washer and dryer with a crowbar. The individual then allegedly told a juvenile to "get off his property," according to Webb's report. The individual then allegedly pushed the juvenile and struck him in the face with a fist. Damage to the washer and dryer was estimated at $700.

Assault alleged
Clecy Conner, 42, of Lincoln Avenue, told the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Wednesday, May 20, he was at the house of an acquaintance on Timber Ridge playing music. When he was getting into his car, an individual allegedly assaulted him. Conner said the two fought for a few minutes, and then Conner left and called dispatch to report the assault.

Arrest in domestic violence case
Joshua J. Gonzalez, 24, of 137 Castle Heights Drive, in Newport, was arrested on Thursday, May 21, and charged with assault by domestic violence. Derrick Webb of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department alleged Gonzalez had consumed several alcoholic beverages at the Midnight Rodeo before an altercation with a woman. They allegedly were in a verbal altercation in her vehicle on West Broadway when Gonzalez punched the gear shifter, windshield, and then the victim in the mouth, causing it to bleed. The victim said Gonzalez was belligerent shortly before assaulting her.


Police

Power tool reported stolen
Tim Perkins, of Lenoir City, Tenn., told Patrolman David R. Smith that on Saturday, May 16, between 00:01 and 8:30 a.m., someone stole a Grayco Airless gas sprayer that belongs to Precision Painting, Inc. of Sevierville and that was left chained up and locked to plumbing in a room on the fourth floor of a Holiday Inn Express construction site.

Two women fight and no contact order allegedly violated
Allison Cox, 18, of Irish Cutt Road, in Newport, told Patrolman William Garber that on Friday, May 15, around 4:20 p.m., she was sitting in a car in the Walmart parking lot and talking to friends when an individual opened the car door and started hitting her in the head, saying, "You're old enough now." Cox reportedly fought back and both ended up on the ground. The individual left in a car. Cox said a no contact order for both of them was in effect.

Theft at Walmart alleged
Walmart loss prevention officer Doug Justice told the Newport Police Department that on Monday, May 18, around 4:10 p.m., a former loss prevention officer employed at Walmart who had shoplifted from the store on previous occasions, was caught on camera stealing a hairbrush (worth $2), lotion ($5), and shampoo ($5).

Criminal trespass alleged at Walmart
Walmart loss prevention officer Doug Justice told Patrolman Justin Vinson that on Sunday, May 17, around 3 p.m., a man tried to take $120 worth of prime rib but put it down and left the store before loss prevention officers could make contact with him. Justice said the man had been banned from Walmart due to prior shoplifting.

License plate reported missing
George Green, 33, of 587 A. Wells Drive, in Newport, told Patrolman Justin Vinson that a license plate was missing from his vehicle that had been parked for sale at a shopping center for the period from May 1 - May 18.

Harassment alleged
Casey McGaha, 17, of Fair Way, in Newport, told Patrolman Matthew Elliott on Monday, May 18, that he feared an individual, he said had been harassing him since March over a former acquaintance, who came close to running over his family in the Walmart parking lot.

Tag reported stolen
Jessica Ellis, 23, of 170 West Main St., in Newport, told Patrolman Donald Coakley that on Monday, May 18, between 2:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., someone stole her license tag. She said she made the discovery when a Tennessee State Trooper had stopped her.

Gas drive-off at Food City West alleged
An employee at Food City West's Gas-and-Go gas station on Western Plaza Way said the gas station was the victim of a gas drive-off on Saturday, May 16, around 6:40 p.m. She said a white male in his mid-20's, about six feet tall, and a slender build pumped $38.28 in gas into a white Chevy pickup truck and then drove off without paying.

Three charges of alleged aggravated assault
Todd Olden, 23, of 785 Musterfield Road, in Newport, was arrested Wednesday, May 20, and charged with three counts of aggravated assault, according to a report by Derek Wright of the Newport Police Department. Nora Herron, 44, of Whitson Drive, in Newport, told the Newport Police Department that on Monday, May 18, around 7 p.m., Olden became angry with her, her daughter, Harley Herron, and Betsy Fine. Herron said the three people were outside when Olden pulled out a gray handgun, cocked the slide back, loaded the weapon, and pointed it at them. Olden then allegedly "chased them around town trying to get them to stop," according to a report. Olden's bond was set at $8,000.

Accident at entrance to Walmart
Jamie Nathaniel James, 34, of 129 Farra Way, in Newport, said he was driving a 2005 GMC 1500 pickup truck on Tuesday, May 19, about 8:15 p.m., when a Green Tahoe pulled out in front of him causing him to swerve and strike a stop sign pole at the entrance to Walmart, according to a report by Patrolman Matthew Elliott.

Hit-and-run alleged at Walmart parking lot
Jerry Ray McMilliam, of 121 Parrotts Circle, in Parrottsville, said he parked his 2000 Ford Ranger pickup at the Newport Walmart parking lot on Tuesday, May 19, around 6:15 p.m. He then went in the store for about 20 minutes, and when he returned he found someone had backed into the tailgate of his truck, causing visible damages, according to a report by Patrolman Heather Lawson.

Cash allegedly stolen from register at Waffle House
Lonnie L. Grooms, apparently an alias, was arrested Tuesday, May 19 by Det. Lynn Shults and Patrolman Donald Coakley and charged with theft of property under $500, according to a report by Shults. Grooms, an employee at Waffle House, at 1016 Cosby Highway, in Newport, was allegedly caught on security tapes on Wednesday, May 13, opening the cash register and removing cash while the cashier was gone to the bathroom. Janetta Long, the district manager, said the register came up short $40.

Vehicle burglary reported
Marie Koger, of 311 Manor Way Apt. 6, in Newport, told Patrolman Donald Coakley that her daughter, Ashley Koger, 17, parked a 1996 Honda Civic at their home on Monday, May 18, about 3 p.m. When Ashley came outside the next day, about 11:20 a.m., she allegedly found her back driver side vent window broken out and her Pioneer CD player missing. The window damage was estimated at $30, and the CD player at $150.

Harassment alleged
Brittany Parks, 17, of 309 Woodlawn Ave., in Newport, said she was harassed by two individuals who followed her in a white older model Oldsmobile "around town and driving reckless," according to a report by Patrolman Derek Wright. Parks said she parked her vehicle in the Walmart parking lot and the individuals were yelling and cursing her.

Harassment alleged in parking lot
Jessica Fortney, 18, of 1010 Cosby Highway, in Newport, said that on Tuesday, May 19, around 8:30 p.m., an individual harassed her and threatened to beat her up as she was walking toward the BP gas station in the Mountain Crest Inn parking lot at 1010 Cosby Highway.

Forged credit cards alleged
Nancy Coakley, 72, of Parrottsville, told Patrolman Donald Coakley that Chase credit card company and Capital One credit card company told her she owed $6,205.30 on the Chase card, and $2,486.54 on the Capital One card. Coakley told the patrolman she didn't own any credit cards, but that an individual earlier had told her that the individual had received the two cards in both their names. The alleged victim said she believes the individual has been using forged credit cards in Coakley's name.

Four suspects named in alleged check card fraud
Barbara B. Ball, 54, of Highway 321 in Parrottsville, contacted the Newport Police Department on Tuesday, May 19, after she noticed what she said were two fraudulent transactions and two overdraft charges in her bank account that she did not authorize. An investigation reportedly showed the alleged fraud was traced to an inmate at a penitentiary in Franklin, La. Ball told the Newport Police Department her bank had already placed a stop and hold on her check card and checking account. Patrolman Justin Vinson named four suspects, including the inmate, in the report. The alleged fraud totaled $157.

Rape alleged
A 34-year-old woman on River Street accused an individual of raping her late Monday, May 18, or early Tuesday, May 19, after kicking in her bedroom door to gain access. Police advised the woman and she agreed to go to a hospital for a rape kit and go to a shelter to sleep. At the hospital, however, she refused the rape kit, but agreed to a blood draw. She said she would feel more comfortable going to her own doctor, and later refused to go to the shelter. Robert Crawley of the Newport Police Department asked Patrolman Donna Hopkins to speak to the woman.

Vandalism and theft over $500
Jane Weems, an employee of Newport Quick Lube at 775 West Highway 25/70, in Newport, said someone broke into two Coke machines on the business's property sometime between the night of Tuesday, May 19, and the morning of Wednesday, May 20, according to a report by Patrolman William Garber. A representative for Coke said the bill machine on one machine had been damaged, and on the second machine, the changer and coin box had been removed, which contained about $36. The total estimated loss, including labor, was estimated at $711.
