Aggravated burglary and theft charges
Jason R. laws, 30, of Newport, was arrested Monday, May 18, and charged with aggravated burglary and theft over $1,000. On Sunday, May 17, Billy Hance reported that someone entered his residence on Old Sevierville Road and took assorted gold jewelry and baseball caps, according to a report by Jason Oury. Some items were recovered from a vehicle that Laws had been driving. The jewelry was recovered and returned to Hance.

Violation of community corrections
Ronnie Travis Samples, 21, of 2688 Bogard Road, in Cosby, was arrested Monday, May 18, at Cocke Estates on 100 Elena Lane and charged with violation of community corrections, according to Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton.

Arrested for failure to appear
Desmond D. Nance, 32, of 2363 Patricia Circle, in Morristown, was arrested Monday, May 18, at 402 Blue Ridge Way, in Newport, and charged with failure to appear, according to a report by Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Jason Oury. Nance allegedly failed to appear in Cocke County Sessions Court on April 22 before Judge John Bell.

Break-in reported
Joyce Clevenger, 65, of Old Sevierville Highway, in Newport, told Sgt. Ricky Holt of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Sunday, May 17, she returned to her home around 7 p.m. and found her back door open and medication missing, as well as a Troy-Bilt pressure washer that was on the back porch. Also missing were two jewelry boxes full of jewelry.

Stolen license plate recovered
Melissa D. Maddox, 34, of Bruners Grove Road, in Bybee, was returned a license plate of hers allegedly stolen by an individual and that Maddox had reported stolen on or about Sunday, May 10. The license plate was allegedly found at a residence on North Highway 340.

Vandalism alleged in Parrottsville
Bruce Warden, 53, of North Highway 340 in Parrottsville, told Deputy Sheriff Alton Cureton that on Friday, May 15, someone went into his home and took several items and damaged his property. He valued the items and damage down to the carpet at $9,560.

Revolver reported stolen
Robert Zydanowicz, 57, of Emilyville Way, in Cosby, reported that on Friday, May 15, during the day, someone broke into his residence and stole a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver valued at $500. The damaged door and doorframe were valued at $700, according to a report by Deputy Sheriff Brian Holt.

Vandalism and theft alleged
Billy Hance, 37, of Old Sevierville Highway, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Alton Cureton that on Sunday, May 17, he returned home to find his door open and the following items missing: Gold rings (valued at $5,000), a gas pressure washer ($300), a gold rope chain ($300), and $80 in change.

Woman's suggestion allegedly ignored
Natasha Swaford, 23, of 443 Riverridge Way, said she went to a residence on Jimtown Road to convince an individual to return home. That person and another male reportedly got angry at her and kicked the window on her 1994 Honda Accord, making it "inoperable," according to a report by Sgt. Eric Rinehart of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department. The two men also reportedly broke a passenger side rearview mirror. Damages were estimated at over $400.

Medication allegedly stolen
Wilma Belchor, 53, of Carson Springs Road, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Steve Johnson that on Tuesday, May 12, someone entered her home through a window and stole a prescription bottle with medicine valued at $200.

County-owned weed-eater and medicine reported stolen
Bradford Dwayne Shaver, 39, of Highway 321 in Parrottsville, told Sgt. Ricky Holt of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that two individuals who visited him at home on Saturday, May 16, about 8:30 p.m. are suspected of stealing a Stihl weed-eater he had at home that belongs to the Cocke County Highway Department and three bottles of prescribed medicine.

Break-in reported
Jonathan Thornton, 26, of Willow Brook Road, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Robert Thornton that on Thursday, May 14, he returned home to find a screen to a front window removed and the following stolen: a rope chain cross charm with diamonds and rubies (over $10,000), two gold and diamond rings ($5,000), a Citizen watch with diamonds ($1,000), a gold nugget watch ($600), a Seiko watch ($300), a gold Fossil watch ($60), a gold class ring ($400), a gold ring with Jesus on it ($200), a piece of jewelry with white gold and diamonds ($1,500), and other assorted jewelry ($500).

Aggravated burglary and theft alleged
Ralph and Ruby Perryman, of Lane Drive, in Newport, told the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Thursday, May 14, someone kicked in the back door to their home and stole the following: a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson, or Ruger, revolver with blue steel and a brown handle ($250), a gold rope chain necklace with a heart pendant and the word "Mom" ($189), $50 in loose change, a silver cross necklace ($35), a Fossil watch ($50), and a small gold melted down ring charm ($50). Damage to the doorframe was estimated at $150.

Tag reported stolen
Brenda Whitehead, 42, of 1351 Applewood Way, in Newport, said that on Thursday, May 14, she was traveling on West Highway 25/70 when her vehicle started having mechanical problems. She told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that she parked the vehicle at a friend's house on Covered Bridge Way. When she returned later the same day, she noticed the Florida tag to her 1994 Lexus was missing. She valued it at $36.10.

Harassment alleged
Rodney Webb, 18, of Johnson Street, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Monday, May 18, around 1:45 p.m., he was traveling north on Chemwood Drive, then stopped behind a stop sign at the intersection of Chemwood and Industrial Road. Webb said a vehicle traveling east on Industrial road swerved towards Webb's vehicle, almost hitting him. Webb said he was not sure who the driver was, but knew who owned the vehicle.

Vandalism alleged
Tammy Davidson, 30, of 536 Overlook Way, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Monday, May 18, an individual came to her residence, kicked a hole in the bedroom wall, tore some mail and threw it on the floor, kicked another hole in a wall, argued with her, and then left. Davidson said she was afraid the person would hurt her. Damage from the two holes in walls was estimated at $1,500. Reported damaged or stolen were a mini disc player ($600), microphone ($450), and a door ($50).

Break-in, burglary alleged
Barbara Barnes, 66, of Horn Way, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Thursday, May 14, she returned home to find someone had pried open the back door and stolen a 9 millimeter Ruger (valued at $500) and $100 in cash. Damage to the door was estimated at $100.

Violation of order of protection
Elizabeth Warren, 29, of 224 View Drive, in Newport, told Sgt. Ricky Holt of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department that on Saturday, May 17, around 1:35 a.m., an individual she has an order of protection on came to her home and beat on her door yelling for her to open the door. When Warren said "no," he allegedly beat on the door some more. The man also allegedly sent 21 text messages to her and left three voice mail messages for her at an earlier time.

2008 Chevy pickup, computer reported stolen
Arter B. Ball, 69, of 3233 Blue Bell Road, in Cosby, told Lt. Richard Caldwell, that on Sunday, May 10, he returned from fishing off Red Fox Road and found his 2008 three-quarter ton, white Chevy pickup truck valued at $48,000 had been stolen. He said also taken with the truck was a Hewlett-Packard laptop computer estimated to be worth $1,000.

Assault, vandalism alleged
Brandy Hensley, 26, of 135 Jimtown Road, in Newport, told Cocke County Deputy Sheriff Tony Bailey that on Wednesday, May 13, that an individual she had been arguing with threw a rock and hit her car at Brock's Market on East Highway 25/70, She said that later at home, the individual and another man came to her residence. The individual who threw the rock argued with her again and then allegedly struck her on the right side of her face and head two or three times and began kicking her car before leaving. Damage to Hensley's 1994 Honda Accord was estimated at $400.



 

Police

Public intoxication arrest
Sgt. Jason Smith of the Newport Police Department arrested Amy Ramsey of 611 Myers Circle, in Newport, Monday, May 18 after she was allegedly reported walking on Broadway while unsteady on her feet and cursing traffic. Smith wrote in a report that Ramsey had been taken home earlier that day because of the same activity. He said he arrested Ramsey and charged her with public intoxication because "she was a danger to herself and others."

Vehicle allegedly strikes parked car
Amber D. Greene, 25, of 510 Shellbark Road, in Newport, was headed north on Mims Avenue in a 2007 Ford Fusion on Friday, May 15, around 2:35 p.m., when she exited a travel lane to the right and struck a legally parked 2005 Nissan Maxima belonging to Ashley L. Weeks, 19, of 4075 Trail Hollow Road, in Cosby, according to a report by Patrolman David R. Smith.

Accident near Walmart
Amanda N. West, 24, of 2730 Larch Road, in Cosby, was headed south on Cosby Highway in a 2007 Nissan Versa on Saturday, May 16, around 12:05 when a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by Michael McClane, 63, of 1080 Hinchey Hollow Road, in New Market was exiting the Walmart parking lot and pulled into the path of the Nissan, causing a collision, according to a report by Patrolman David R. Smith.

Theft of property alleged
Katrina Dorsey, 73, told the Newport Police Department that on Monday, May 11, at about 8 p.m., she stepped outside her home and left an individual along that she suspected stole her hot pink Ipod worth $220 and six pills worth $13.

Arrest in aggravated assault case
Joshua C. Laws, reportedly an alias, was arrested on Sunday, May 17 and charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly beat up Billy Joe Barnett in the parking lot of the Back-Way. Barnett was taken to the emergency room at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County with two broken jaws, a broken nose, fracture to his left orbital socket, and some bleeding on his brain and transported to Johnson City Medical Center, according to a report by Det. Lynn Shults.

Two arrests on Cosby Highway
Anthony Martin, 37, was arrested on Monday, May 18 at 11:55 p.m. on Cosby Highway across from Lowe's after Patrolman Derek Wright stopped Martin, the driver of a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer with a passenger side headlight that was out. He was charged with simple possession of Schedule VI drugs (marijuana), violation of community corrections, light law/no insurance/wrong tags, and driving with a suspended license. Kenneth Dameron, 33, of 106 Circle Road, in Newport, was also arrested, and charged with simple possession of Schedule VI. Neither man allegedly had a valid driver's license.
