NEWPORT-Members of the Cocke County Grand Jury dealt with 49 criminal cases in the first day of a two-day session on Monday.

Reporting to Circuit Judge Ben W. Hooper II on Monday afternoon, grand jurors returned 21 indictments, 15 presentments which were opened to the public, 12 presentments which were sealed from public view until the arrest of the defendants, and a single no true bill.

The grand jury is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday to hear more cases. Arraignments for those accused by the grand jury this week are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 26, before Judge Hooper.

Presentments differ from indictments in that the criminal charges originated with the grand jury rather than with warrants and proceedings in general sessions court. Presentments are sometimes sealed by the court from the public until the person who has been accused has been arrested and informed of the charges.

A Cocke County man is facing several felony charges as a result of an incident on November 14 involving a woman and two minor children, according to a presentment issued by the grand jury on Monday.

Jason Brian Adams, 22, of Wilton Springs Road, is charged with child abuse and neglect of a child less than six years old and with three counts of aggravated kidnapping, three counts of aggravated assault, and three counts of domestic assault.

According to the presentment issued by the grand jury on Monday, Adams is alleged to have held Elizabeth Adams and two minor children at gunpoint last November 15 and to have placed them in "fear [of] imminent bodily injury."

In an indictment handed down on Monday, three local people are facing charges in connection with an alleged conspiracy to break into a rural grocery store in November.

Mark E. Barnett, Thomas Daniel Davis, and Korey Dale Webb are accused in a single indictment of possession of burglary tools, reckless endangerment, and conspiracy to commit burglary.

According to the indictment, the three participated in a conspiracy to burglarize Edwina Grocery Store off Edwina Road on November 10 by traveling to the store with backpacks, hand-held radios, and a large rock to be used to break into the store.

Three other people are named on separate indictments handed down on Monday in connection with a November home burglary.

Brian Swindle, Samuel Yost Jr., and Keenen Mica Murphy are charged in separate indictments with aggravated burglary, theft of property valued at more than $1,000, vandalism of property valued at less than $500, and aggravated trespassing.

The three defendants are accused of taking three televisions from the Jim Ogle residence at 161 Red Fox Road on November 12 and with causing damage to a window of the residence, according to the indictments.
