NEWPORT-Cocke County's elementary basketball squads were
hard at it Monday night knowing it would be the last hoops they would play the
rest of the week, do to the Thanksgiving holiday.
In Round 5 of elementary play Monday, Nov. 24, Grassy
Fork traveled to Northwest, while Edgemont played at Del Rio, Parrottsville
hosted Bridgeport, and Centerview was on the road at Cosby. Smoky Mountain had
the night off.

The Lady Ravens took little time in doing away with the
Lady Patriots, blitzing out to a 22-0 first quarter lead and a 37-0 lead at the
break. When the smoke had cleared in the second half, the Lady Raven had a
52-point victory. Wendy McGaha had a game-high 10 point to pace a balanced Lady
Raven attack, while Alyssa Mitchell and Savannah Pruitt shared scoring honors
for the Lady Patriots with two points each.

The Ravens were in control from the outset, and increased
their lead throughout. The Ravens led at the end of the first quarter, 15-8,
and by 10 at the break, 30-20. The Ravens continued to push in the second half,
increasing their lead to 16, 43-27, at the end of three, and then cruised home
with the 16-point victory. Luke Lemons scored a game-high 26 points to lead the
Raven attack, while Jacob White had 14 points to lead the Patriots.

The Lady Panthers took control of this one early and
never looked back, despite going 1-15 from the free throw line. The Lady
Panthers raced out to a 14-4 first quarter lead, and made it 22-4 at the break.
The Lady Trojans found some offense in the third quarter, but were still
out-sc0ored 17-11 as the Lady Panthers cruised home with the 20-point victory.
Tiffany Smelcer had a game-high 18 points to lead the Lady Panthers, while
Autumn Stokely had 6 points to pace the Lady Trojans.

This was a back-and-forth contest that saw the Trojans
pull it out late. The Panthers took the first quarter lead, 14-12, but the
Trojans evened it up at the break, 24-24. The Panthers out-scored the Trojans
13-6 for a 37-30 third quarter lead, but couldn't hold it. The Trojans poured
it on late, and slipped away with a four-point victory. Taylor Sells had a
game-high 22 points to lead the Trojans while Jake Clevenger had 12 points to
pace the Panthers.

This was a defensive struggle through the first half,
with the Lady Panthers leading 3-0 at the break. But, the Lady Panthers stepped
up the offense in the second half, leading 9-2 after three, and this racing
home with a 13-point victory. Bethanie Williams had a game-high 6 points to
lead the lady Panthers while three players, Sarah Conard, Emily Stinson and
Ashley Woody, shared scoring honors for the Lady Trojans with two points each.

This was a hard-fought contest until the Panthers took
control in the third quarter. The Panthers led by two, 7-5, at the end of the
first quarter, and increased their lead to four, 17-13, at the break. But, the
Panthers out-scored the Trojans 9-2 for a 26-15 third quarter lead, and made it
home with a 7-point victory. Blake Clark had a game-high 15 points to lead the
Panthers, while Logan Black had 8 points to pace the Trojans.

Both teams played toe-to-toe, right up to the final
buzzer. The Lady Parrotts had a one-point lead, 6-5, at the end of the first quarter.
But, the Lady Rockets came back to take a one-point lead at the break, 15-14.
The Lady Parrotts came back to take the third quarter lead, 26-24, and then
held off the Lady rockets down the stretch for the two-point victory. Heather
Ottinger had a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Parrotts, while Chelsie
Phillips had 10 points to pace the Lady Rockets.

After getting off to a slow start, the Parrotts exploded
in the second quarter. The Parrotts led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter,
and then lit up the scoreboard for 25 second-quarter points for a 36-9 lead at
the break. The Parrotts then cruised home with the 42-point victory. Heath
Hembree had a game-high 12 points to lead a balanced Parrott attack while
Patrick Hurst had 4 points to lead the Rockets.

Both teams battled all four quarters, but the Lady
Falcons came away with the hard-fought four-point victory. Leah Lewandowski had
a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Falcons, while Tasha Ball had 13 points
to pace the Lady Eagles.
The Eagles were all over the Falcons early, and never
looked back. The Eagles took an 18-4 first quarter lead and made it 36-12 at
the break. The Eagles then went to the bench the rest of the way and came home
with the 31-point victory Drew Schreder and Tanner Cureton shared game-high
scoring honors as each canned 14 for the Eagles while Caleb Johnson had 8
points to pace the Falcons.

The Lady Warriors started strong, reeling off the first
eight points of the game and led 13-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Surgoinsville fought back, and pulled to within three before the Lady Warriors
came alive again, and made it a 23-16 lead at the break. The Lady Warriors sprinted
from the locker room and blitzed Surgoinsville 13 to three in the third
quarter. The Lady Warriors kept up their torrid pace over the final frame to
take the 26-point victory. Cassidy Gibson and Kaitlyn Martin shared scoring
honors for the Lady Warriors with each getting 13 while Surgoinsville was led
by Adria Christian's 13 points.

The Warriors pressure defense and high-powered offense
were way too much for Surgoinsville Monday night. The Warriors blasted off to a
19-6 first quarter lead, and despite efforts by Surgoinsville to climb back
into the game, it was 34-16 NGS at the break. The Warriors continued their
dominance in the second half, taking the third quarter 21-2, and cruising home
with the 40-point victory. Dylan Dockery and Chase Woods shared scoring honors
with each scoring a game-high 14 points while David McFarland had 8 points to
pace Surgoinsville.
This one belonged to the Lady Warriors from the get-go.
The Lady Warriors raced out to an 11-4 first quarter lead and never looked
back, cruising home with the 27-point victory. Mika Wester had a game-high 15
points to lead the Lady Warriors, followed by Madilynn Gregg with 11, Stone
Tremtham with 4, Meridith Bell with 3, Sydney Hazelwood with 2, Elizabeth Evans
with 2, Hannah Ward with 2 and Catlin Kinser with 2.
All of the elementary schools are now on Thanksgiving
break, but will return to the hardwood on Monday, December 1, with
Parrottsville playing at Northwest, Centerview hosting Smoky Mountain, Edgemont
traveling to Cosby, and Grassy Fork hosting Del Rio, including both girl's and
boy's junior varsity. And, Newport Grammar will return to action on Monday, December
1, at Hancock County with girl's JV, girl's varsity and boy's varsity starting
at 5 p.m.
