Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan and Animal
Shelter president Robert Brannon, who was "Newport Mayor for a day,"
lead the pack at the Cocke County A&I Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon as
part of the Animal Fun Fair. The event, which Brannon said was coordinated by
Lora Garcia, marked the first annual Animal Fair and Fund Raiser for the
Newport Animal Shelter and Rolling Rescue. Rolling Rescue has placed 1,000
local pets in homes across the country that would have otherwise been put to
sleep. Animal Shelter employees, volunteers and the public enjoyed music,
concessions and contests. According to Brannon, "Your support for Rolling
Rescue has saved close to 1,000 lives." The public also had the opportunity
to meet Forrest, the NAS's official greeter and mascot, who uses a special
needs wheelchair for mobility. In addition, Brannon expressed his appreciation
to Newport City Council for continuing to fund the Animal Shelter, "I
would like to express my thanks on behalf of our community to our Newport Mayor
Connie Ball, Vice-mayor Freddie Gregg and Aldermen Luke Goddard, Kenny Morgan,
John Bugg and Dennis Thornton for the wonderful services that they provide to
the citi9zens of Cocke County and their support of the Newport Animal Shelter.
Their support for these homeless and abandoned animals is truly a blessing to
our community." Look for additional photos from the event in upcoming
