CHEROKEE NATIONAL FOREST-The Governor's Task
Force on Marijuana Eradication reportedly seized more than 350,000 marijuana
plants in Cocke County Monday.
At press
time, neither the THP nor TBI provided an official release regarding the
incident. Knoxville's WBIR Channel 10 News reported the task force spotted the
plants around 10 a.m. in a section of the Cherokee National Forest about one
mile off Interstate 40.
According
to the THP's media relations office, Lt. Terry Botts, a special operations
chopper pilot, alerted officers on the ground of the marijuana's location.
Special agents reported no one was present when the pot was discovered but that
the estimated street value of the plants, if allowed to mature, would be $700
million.
The
Governor's Task Force on Marijuana Eradication is comprised of several agencies
including the Alcohol Beverage Commission, THP, Tennessee Bureau of
Investigation and the National Guard Counter Drug Task Force.
Reports say
this is the largest marijuana seizure in Cocke County in the past five years.
