Water-logged half-ton recovered

Wednesday, Sgt. Tony Whitten filled out a recovered vehicle report concerning a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 found submerged in a pond off Middle Creek Road. The vehicle, owned by OTA Grindstaff, 140 Roy Road, Cosby, was intact and Whitten noted the starting switch appeared undamaged. The estimated value of the vehicle was not determined in the report.

Cigs carted away

Thursday, Dep. Steve Johnson filled out an incident report made by Jimmy John Weeks, 30, 4211 Ground Hog Road, Cosby, concerning the theft of two cartons of cigarettes from his vehicle while he was inside the Cosby Dollar General. According to the report, Weeks stated he stopped at the dollar store for about 15 minutes. When he left the store, he noticed someone had entered his vehicle and stole a carton of Marlboro’s and one carton of Marlboro Lights. Weeks estimated the cost of the stolen cigarettes to be $78. Weeks’ vehicle wasn’t locked at the time of the theft.

Past coworker fails to return Ford

Thursday, Sgt. Ricky Holt filled out an offense report made by Stephen Hamrick, 44, 4310 Ground Hogg Way, Cosby, concerning the theft of his 1999 Ford F-150 pickup. According to the report, Hamrick stated he was trying to sell his truck and ran into a man he worked with at Webb’s Market about five years ago. The man reportedly wanted to see the truck and went to Hamrick’s home to test drive it. The man told Hamrick he was going to drive the vehicle to the store. Hamrick allowed the man to drive the vehicle around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. According to Hamrick, the former coworker failed to bring the vehicle back. The estimated value of the F-150 is $4,500.

Baseball equipment lifted

Sunday, Sgt. Ricky Holt filled out an offense report made by Dewayne Daniels, 35, P.O. Box 75, Parrottsville, concerning the theft of baseball equipment from Parrottsville Elementary School’s ball field. According to the report, Daniels stated he left the ball field at 8 p.m. Saturday and locked the concession stand. On Sunday, Daniels came back to the field around 7 p.m. and discovered a bat bag, two baseball gloves, one set of batting gloves, one batting helmet, a case of Pepsi and two baseball caps were missing. The estimated value of the missing items is $312.

Wiley Town Road break-in

Thursday, Sgt. Ricky Holt filled out an offense report made by Jared Quick, 34, 316 Wiley Town Road, Newport, concerning the theft of a 19” Phillips TV, Xbox, Play Station 2 games, Xbox games and CDs from his residence. According to the report, Quick stated he left his home at about 2 p.m. and came back around 5:15 p.m. to find the above-listed items missing. The estimated value of the stolen items is $930.

Sharp discovery on Sabre Lane

Thursday, Patrolman David Smith filled out an incident report made by Ralph Mardis, 52, 219 Sabre Lane, Newport, concerning several roofing nails scattered near his driveway. According to the report, Mardis stated he returned home from work and found the nails near his driveway. Smith noted the nails were strewn around the edge of Mardis’s driveway. Mardis picked up the nails.

Gas theft

Thursday, Patrolwoman Amy Elswick was dispatched to Murphy Oil gas station on a call concerning a drive-off. According to the report, the clerk stated three men in a red truck pumped gas from pump No. 7 in the amount of $15.01 around 7:36 p.m. The clerk said she had a receipt for the same pump in the amount of $20 from 7:33 p.m. that was unpaid. She then asked the man driving the red truck if he had pumped the $20 worth of gas and he reportedly told her “no” and to call the police. The truck then fled the scene before police arrived. The clerk stated no other vehicles were around the pump at the time of the theft and believes the man driving the truck pumped the gas without paying before pumping $15.01, which he paid cash for.
