Copper lifted from Del Rio residence
Tuesday, Lt. Rick Laws filled out an offense report made
by Dale Ball, 70, P.O. Box 462, Newport, concerning the theft of copper wiring
from a house owned by Fred Ball, 46, 3135 E. Highway 25/70, Del Rio. According
to the report, Dale Ball stated that on April 14 and 15, between the hours of 6
p.m. and 8 a.m., someone broke into an old house owned by Fred Ball in Del Rio.
The suspect(s) reportedly pried a window open to enter the residence. The
estimated value of the stolen copper wiring plus damaged window and electrical
box is $760.
Violation of probation
Tuesday, Dep. Derek Wright arrested Travis B. Ownby, 25,
523 N. Susong Drive, Newport, on charges of violation of probation.
Vandalism, attempted burglary
Tuesday, Sgt. Eric Rinehart filled out an offense report
made by Sherry Lynn Frisbee, 45, 4849 E. Highway 25/70, Del Rio, concerning the
vandalism of a home at 138 Wolf Creek Road, Del Rio. Upon arrival, Rinehart
noticed someone pried the residence’s door and damaged the kitchen window.
However, Rinehart reported entry wasn’t made inside the residence. The
estimated cost of the damaged door and window is $500.

Hit-and-run
Monday, Patrolwoman Heather Lawson was dispatched to the
scene of a two-vehicle hit-and-run accident on West Broadway. According to the
report, Danielle F. Moore, 33, 601 E. Broadway, Newport, was traveling west on
Broadway in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban and came to a stop for a traffic light
near the intersection of Cope Boulevard. While stopped at the light, the
Suburban Moore was driving was struck in the rear by a gold-colored Honda
Accord. The driver of the Accord drove off toward the Dairy Queen parking lot
and almost struck a witness’s vehicle before continuing along the Old Knoxville
Highway. Police were unable to locate the Honda.
Four-year forgery
Tuesday, Patrolwoman Donna Hopkins filled out an incident
report made by Janice M. Marshall, no age given, 324 Old Sevierville Highway,
Newport, concerning the forgery of several of her benefit checks. According to
the report, Marshall told Hopkins she believes a 37-year-old white male has
been forging her signature on the checks since 2004. Marshall obtained copies
of the forged checks and filed affidavits with the issuer of the checks.
Susong residence burglarized
Tuesday, Patrolwoman Amy Elswick was dispatched to the
residence of Rebecca Colombe, 46, 490 N. Susong, Newport, on a call concerning
the burglary of her home. Upon arrival, Elswick spoke with Colombe who stated
sometime between 8 to 9 p.m., someone broke into her home and stole several
items. Colombe told police when she came home she found the back door to her
residence open. Colombe told Elswick she locks her doors. Items stolen included
a Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Compaq laptop computer, three Playstation
games, one 41-inch plasma TV, a Nintendo DS, miscellaneous jewelry, one
battery-operated child’s four-wheeler and a change jar. The estimated value of
the stolen items is $4,230.
Camry and Sunfire collide
Tuesday, Patrolman David Smith was dispatched to a
two-vehicle accident on Woodlawn Avenue. According to the report, Wayne A.
Rankins, 49, 218 Mineral St., Newport, was traveling south on Woodlawn Avenue
in his 1999 Toyota Camry when his vehicle was struck by a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire
driven by Jim Spence, 74, 2560 Sorrel Road, Cosby. Spence reportedly pulled his
Sunfire from a parking lot and into the path of Rankins’ Camry, causing the two
to collide.
Clevenger Cut Off collision
Tuesday, Patrolman Ricky Parton was dispatched to a
two-vehicle accident at the junction of Clevenger Cut Off and the eastbound
lane of Highway 25/70. According to the report, Phyllis A. Moffet, 54, 1422
Skyline Drive, New Market, was stopped at the intersection of Clevenger Cut Off
and Highway 25/70 in her 1998 Nissan Frontier awaiting to enter traffic when
the rear of her vehicle was struck by a 2008 Ford Fusion driven by Mary Taylor,
47, 609 Upper Broad St., Newport. Taylor said she was watching a truck
traveling along east Highway 25/70 and thought Moffet had already entered
traffic when she began to accelerate her vehicle.
