Prickly discovery
Wednesday, Dep. Alton Cureton filled out an incident report made by Linda Ottinger, 55, 2851 Parrottsville, concerning nails found in her driveway. According to the report, Ottinger stated she went to her mailbox around 12 p.m. and discovered someone had thrown nails in her driveway. Ottinger reportedly suffered two wounds to her right and left foot as a result of the vandalism and reportedly sought medical treatment for the wounds.


Saturday night special
Wednesday, Dep. David Parton filled out an offense report made by Edna Edityh Webb, 53, 2306 Cosby Highway, Newport, concerning the theft of her Taurus .38 Special. According to the report, Webb reported someone stole the pistol either from her home or car last Saturday. The estimated value of the stolen firearm is $500.


Shepherd mix crooked from residence
Sunday, Dep. Derek Wright responded to a call made by James Smith, 1682 W. Highway 25/70, Newport, concerning the theft of his seven-year-old black Labrador along with a German Shepherd mix from his residence. According to the report, Smith told Wright someone stole his two dogs from his backyard. Smith stated he left the animals chained inside a fenced area. Smith allegedly suspects a neighbor may be responsible. An estimated value for the dogs wasn’t provided.


Garage vandalized
Wednesday, Dep. C.J. Ball filled out an incident report made by Mary Hardy, 46, 2717 Autumn Woods Way, concerning the vandalism of her garage door. According to the report, Hardy stated someone used a blunt object in an attempt to pry open her garage door. A blue van was reportedly seen in Hardy’s driveway when the incident occurred. The estimated damage costs total $1,000.

Barnett jailed on domestic assault charges
Wednesday, Patrolwoman Amy Elswick was dispatched to Sun Crest Apartments, Apartment No. 7, Newport, on an alleged domestic assault call. Upon arrival, Elswick spoke with a woman who stated her live-in boyfriend, Clifford D. Barnett, 24, same address, allegedly punched the back of her head with his fist. Elswick noticed a visible knot on the victim. The victim told Elswick she and her boyfriend had been arguing. When the victim attempted to call her mother to come get her, Barnett reportedly ripped the phone line from the jack. Barnett also is alleged to have ripped the victim’s shirt while she attempted to get away. The victim stated Barnett threatedned to cut her throat with a knife and burn her mother’s home if she left. Elswick and officers observed the damaged phone line in addition to the victim’s ripped shirt. Barnett was arrested on charges of domestic assault.


Alleged burglars fail to steal bike
Thursday, Patrolwoman Amy Elswick was dispatched to 194 Bowman Drive on a call concerning an attempted burglary of a motorcycle from a building. Upon arrival, Elswick spoke with a man who stated he witnessed three white males trying to break into a building containing a motorcycle. The witness stated one subject tried to turn the building’s doorknob while another male in a white shirt tried to knock the door open with his body while a third served as a lookout. The witness told Elswick he shouted “hey” and the trio bolted. While the three were running one of the men reportedly cursed and said he dropped something. The witness said one of the men possibly named T.J., was wearing a red shirt. Another alleged burglar was wearing a hooded shirt. While Elswick and other officers were speaking with the witness, two men walked by matching the description provided. The witness said, “That’s them.” Elswick arrested Randall S. Cody, 19, 2739 Spiral Drive, Dandridge and Joseph McGaha, 19, Whitlock Road, Newport, on charges of attempted burglary. Police were reportedly unable to locate a “T.J.” The arrestees stated they didn’t know a T.J. and they made no contact with anyone else that evening.


Public intoxication charges
Wednesday, Lt. Terry Lawson arrested Jonathan W. Ailey, 29, 188 Terry St., Newport, on charges of public intoxication.


Red Ranger rides off
Wednesday, Patrolman Donald Coakley was dispatched to the Murphy USA gas station in the Wal-Mart parking lot on a report of a gas drive-off. According to the report, a 22-year-old white male driving a red 1997 Ford Ranger pumped $16.28 worth of gas and drove off without paying.


Wheels and tires stolen from North Street
Wednesday, Patrolman Donald Coakely responded to a call made by Derek Dieaz, 26, 631 North St., Newport, concerning the theft of two wheels and tires form his residence. According to the report, Dieaz stated he took two wheels and tires out of his garage Jan. 31 and attempted to put them on his vehicle but the size didn’t match. Dieaz stated he took the set and placed beside the back of his house. Dieaz noticed the set was missing Wednesday and informed police. The wheels are ICW racing rims and the tire manufacturer is unknown. The estimated value of the stolen set is $400.


Rental homes vandalized
Wednesday, Patrolman Ricky Parton was dispatched to both 665 and 668 River St., Newport, on a call concerning a breaking and entering incident. Upon arrival, Parton spoke with Roger Miller, 59, Dandridge, who stated he went by the two above-mentioned houses to take measurements for carpet installations. When Miller walked in the 665 residence, he noticed the window had been damaged for someone to make entry into the house. Miller then looked across the street and noticed the front door of the 668 residence was open. Miller told Parton he owns the homes, used as rental property and was unsure who would want to damage them. Parton noticed the front door of the 668 residence had been either kicked or shoved open and the deadbolt was damaged. Miller stated the damaged window at the other residence must have occurred around 11-11:30 p.m. the previous evening. The estimated cost to repair the damaged homes is $400. No items were listed stolen from the houses.
