NEWPORT - Students enrolled in Cocke County schools will continue to enjoy a lengthy holiday break next week as 2008 arrives. Cocke County schools, both elementary and high schools, will remain closed until Monday, January 7. However, students at Newport Grammar School are to report for classes on Thursday, January 3. Both city and county offices will be open on Monday, Dec. 31, on a regular basis. After being closed for Tuesday, Jan. 1, they will reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2. The Newport/Cocke County Community Center will close at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31 and remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1. The center will reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2. The Newport/Cocke County Chamber of Commerce will close at noon Monday, Dec. 31 and reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2. The office of Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan, Jr. will close at noon Monday, Dec. 31, and reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2. The United States Post Office will close at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 and reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2. All county convenience centers will be open on New Year's Day. City trash pick-up, normally scheduled on Tuesday, will be done on Wednesday, Jan. 2. The city's convenience center will be closed on New Year's Day. All four local banks - Green, National Bank of Tennessee, Newport Federal, and US Bank - will be closed on New Year's Day. The offices of both Newport Utilities and Jefferson/Cocke County Utility District will be closed New Year's Day. All four Cocke County libraries - Cosby Community, Del Rio (Marie Ellison Memorial), Parrottsville, and Stokely Memorial - will be closed on New Year's Day and reopen on Jan. 2. The offices of the Newport Plain Talk will close at noon on Monday, Dec. 31 and reopen Wednesday, Jan. 2.
