NEWPORT-The Cocke County Lady Red
Softball team (3-6) was defeated 6-1 by
Inter-Mountain Athletic Conference rivals,
the Cherokee High School Lady Chiefs
(3-1), of Rogersville, at Cocke County
High School on Wednesday.
"We played real good the first six innings,
but then our youth showed," said head
coach Larry Williams. "It's growing pains.
We let them score on a defensive error in
the sixth and the girls dropped their
heads a little so the game got away from
Williams said the team did a good job
overall for being so young and with their
growing pains, they'll continue to improve
as the season develops.
The Lady Red held the Lady Chiefs
scoreless in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first, Cocke County
took the lead in the game 1-0 as Jennifer
Campbell singled, was moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt by Erin Biddle. Malinda
Ball drew a walk and Kasey Shelton was
hit by a pitch from the Lady Chiefs' Kristen
Dyer, who picked up the win in the game.
The Lady Red's Devon Ruggles came to
the plate and drove a deep shot to center
field, which scored Campbell on the
sacrifice fly. Cherokee recorded the last
out of the inning and held Cocke County
to one run.
Both teams played excellent defense in
the second, third, and fourth innings as
neither team could score giving Cocke
County the advantage going into the five
Cocke County starting pitcher, Sierra
Frisbee, got into trouble in the top of the
fourth inning, but pitched out of it by
recording a strikeout to end the inning
with runners on first and second.
However, in the top of the fifth inning,
Cherokee scored one unearned run on a
throwing error by Cocke County that tied
the game, 1-1.
The Lady Red was unable to score in the
bottom of the fifth, but did record their
second hit of the game, as Campbell
hammered a double to deep center field.
The Lady Red's Tiffany Brown, Biddle,
and Ball all hit hot shots in the infield, but
all were caught by the Lady Chief's
defenders to end the inning with
Campbell stranded on second.
In the top of the sixth, Cherokee scored
two more unearned runs on another
throwing error by the Lady Red, which put
the Lady Chiefs ahead, 3-1.
Cocke County went one, two, three in the
bottom of the sixth and was unable to

point in the game and gave up three more
runs to Cherokee giving the Lady Chiefs a
6-1 lead after the top of the seventh.
Cocke County had one final opportunity in
the bottom of the seventh, but once again
only managed to send three batters to the
plate as they lost the game to Cherokee,
The Lady Red's Frisbee allowed seven
hits, while walking four and striking out
three. Cocke County committed seven
errors in the game. Cocke County's
senior, Campbell, recorded the Lady
Red's only two hits of the game.
The Lady Cherokee's Dyer allowed two
hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Cherokee had no errors.
The Cocke County High School Lady Red
softball team will be at home Thursday to
face IMAC rivals, Morristown West, at 4:30
