NEWPORT-A suspect wanted for aggravated domestic assault and failure to appear in Cocke County led a captain with the Newport Police Department and other officers on a high-speed chase through Newport, and then in speeds in excess of 100 m.p.h. on Interstate 40, the NPD reported.Capt. Scott Lamb said that he got information that Joseph Samuel Evans, 25, had just left an address outside Newport's city limits and was heading to downtown Newport in a silver Chevrolet Impala.Capt. Lamb observed a vehicle matching the description that headed south on North Street going 53 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone, at about 11 a.m., the report stated.Police turned on the vehicle on North Street, and Capt. Lamb stated he activated his emergency lights.Capt. Lamb reportedly followed Evans in the Chevrolet onto Main Street, and headed west, around 11 a.m., where Evans allegedly refused to stop.The captain said he then activated all his emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the Chevrolet.For more details, please see the weekend edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
