NEWPORT-A single gunshot killed Bybee resident Richard Dale Lane, 42, when he reportedly went to a trailer on Carson Springs Road to check on his German Shepherd, on Tuesday, Oct. 29, a friend and the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.

Missy Lane, Lane's wife, told officers that the couple planned on getting a revolver style handgun—a .38 Rossi revolver/handgun—appraised at a trailer at 206 Carson Springs Road, and had planned on test-firing it to make sure it functioned property, Deputy Sheriff Jerry Vandergriff reported.

The victim lived at 3506 Glendale Road, in Bybee, the report stated.

Missy Lane told officers that she and her husband were standing in the driveway in front of the trailer when he asked her to hand the gun to him, and as they made the exchange, the gun discharged at 12:45 p.m., the report stated.
