NEWPORT-Investigators have all but ruled out arson as the cause of 10 brush fires that burned along separate locations on the shoulder of Interstate 40 west, from mile marker 439 to near the 432 exit, on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20, Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes said. The two largest fires were near the 432 exit, including one that engulfed two acres at one point, said Cocke County Fire Department Chief William Smallwood on Monday, Oct. 21.All of the brush fires were located close to the westbound lanes of I-40.Traffic was never diverted or halted, but slowed down close to the multiple fires as motorists watched firefighters with the CCFD, Cosby Volunteer Fire Department, and Newport Fire Department battle the flames. For more details, please see the Tuesday edition of the Newport Plain Talk.
