NEWPORT-Members of the Newport Regional Planning Commission approved a resolution concerning restrictions on any possible future moonshine distillery that wants to operate in Newport, when they met Tuesday, Sept. 10.
The resolution to amend the zoning regulations of the City of Newport to permit and regulate alcoholic beverage production within the city limits was then forwarded to the Newport City Council, which has the authority to make the new regulations go into effect. It must first have a public hearing and two readings before it can become law.
The regulations approved by the city planners followed a lengthy debate about where a distillery could be located (in a commercial or business district), and a requirement that it have a section for either a restaurant, or a retail store selling to the public some of the moonshine produced in the distillery.
