NEWPORT-Heavy rains before dawn this morning caused flooding in various areas, including Newport Grammar School, a downtown coffeehouse, and sections of West Broadway, authorities announced.
Ben Hicks, superintendent of the Newport Street Department, was called out to Newport Grammar School at about 4:30 a.m. to investigated reported flooding.
At about 3:10 a.m., flooding closed Broadway from Mims Avenue to McMahan and Broadway for about 30 minutes while waters rose and flooded the East Tennessee Coffee Company and public sidewalks, Patrolman Matthew Elliott of the Newport Police Department reported.
