NEWPORT-In an effort to address complaints about constables writing tickets on Interstate 40 in Cocke County, the Public Safety Committee of the Cocke County Legislative Body voted Tuesday to cut the fee received by constables for speeding tickets from $25 to $1 per ticket.
Committee member Michael McCarter made the motion, contending there is a perception of "legal fee grabbing" by the county.
"We have limited power on what we can do but the powers we have are absolute," said McCarter. "We have the ability to set fees. This centers around one constable who seems to have a total disregard. We have juggled with this issue the longest of any for the whole term. My opinion is it goes back to the almighty dollar."
