NEWPORT-Plans are in place for the 2013 Tennessee Picnic, a celebration dating to 1947 that will bring dozens of visitors to Cocke County to celebrate African-American family heritage and reunite with relatives and friends over a weeklong period.

This year's celebration will kick off Wednesday, August 7, at 10 a.m. at Michael's Bar with a brunch. "This event is set aside as a time to remember the good old days of the Tennessee Picnic," said Delores Branner, president of the Tennessee Picnic Association. "There will be a slide show and we encourage you to bring old photos and stories to share." There is no admission fee.

On Wednesday evening, the popular Miss Tennessee Picnic pageant will be held at Cocke County High School. Five young ladies are vying for the title this year. The pageant starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Ages 5 and under will be admitted free.
