NEWPORT—The Driver’s License Office, operated through the County Clerk’s Office in Cocke County Courthouse, will be closed from 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, through 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, for equipment upgrades.

Cocke County Clerk Janice Butler said the equipment change is part of the state’s effort to change how it issues driver’s licenses.

“We’re one of the last ones on the chain,” said Butler. “Many offices have already been changed over. There going to install new equipment those days to get us ready.”

Butler said the state hopes the changes will result in the elimination of long lines and help in preventing fraud.
