NEWPORT-Julia Catherine Gibson, 22, of 177 Thorn Road, in Newport, was arrested Thursday, July 18, as she allegedly walked to a spot at the Courthouse where she planned to leave drugs and tobacco for three female inmates in the old jail to retrieve by pulling them upstairs with a handmade rope, the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.

Correctional officers got wind of the prearranged contraband smuggling drop-off by listening in on phone calls between Gibson and three female inmates: Carolyne Hall, 50; Jasmine Prevost, 21; and Whitney Hannah, 25, according to a report by Sgt. Robert Thornton, Jail Administrator Tommy Large, and Lt. Anthony Horne.

Officers set up surveillance for the expected drop of drugs and tobacco three floors below the old jail in the County Courthouse, and intercepted Gibson at 11:45 a.m., the report stated.

Officers allegedly found eight Alprazolam pills, one 30-mg morphine pill, cigarettes, loose tobacco, and Diphenhydramine pills in Gibson's possession as she approached a window to make the drop-off, the officers reported.
